Astrology 101: Breaking Down the Basics

Elle20-05-2025
Learning about astrology can feel like discovering an iceberg. What you thought was just sun signs and casually checking Co-Star is actually an entire system involving houses, planets, modalities, birth charts, and more. That being said, it's a good idea to get a grasp of the basics before you start to descend into the deep. For example, what exactly is astrology anyway? And how has it changed over the years? Below, Tali Edut, one half of The AstroTwins, ELLE's resident astrologers, answers all those introductory questions. If after reading, you're looking to learn even more, Edut recommends analyzing your own birth chart and in turn, learning about how planets, signs, and houses can all be pieced together.
Astrology is where math meets myth. It is the calculation of the planets in their orbit combined with thousands and thousands of years of storytelling and watching patterns. You could also say astrology is kind of the cosmic code to our personalities and also the energies that are happening outside of us in the world.
It's a system that's been developing since the Babylonians and then the Egyptians, the Greeks, and then in modern days, too. It was once considered something that people studied at universities, too. So there's something about it that has lasted through the ages. A number of people are now going back and learning Hellenistic astrology, which was the astrology that existed back in antiquity in Greece. But I'm not a fan of it, because it stops with the planet Saturn, and Saturn is the patriarchy planet. I'm like, come on, Uranus comes after that, the planet of revolution. Then comes Neptune, the planet of dreams and subconscious, and Pluto, which is shadow work. They deserve to be part of this.
I consider myself an evolutionary astrologer. I really do believe that we're always evolving, and the interpretation of our sun signs and moon signs will evolve as we do through our lives. Like my Scorpio moon might've made me jealous and possessive and insecure when I was a teenager, but now I use it to be empathetic and understand people and get compassionate with them.
A personal love of astrology is primarily a tool for self-love and self-acceptance. I think when you understand that the birth chart is the cosmic blueprint to the person you are, why you are the way you are, and what potential there is to tap, it's like the gold mine, the treasure map to who you are. You're not stuck with, oh, I'm a Capricorn, I must work hard, or I'm a Virgo, I am a neat freak. Not at all. It's a treasure map to the energies you have to tap into, based on where the stars were when you were born.
You can also use astrology for predictive purposes. Depending on where the planets are at any moment in time, you can look ahead and prepare for those energies that are coming in.
A lot of astrologers, including myself, are self-taught, but there are certification programs. People are learning astrology faster and faster now, because there are so many great tools for it out there. Sometimes things just click into place collectively.
But to actually become a great astrologer, it's not just about knowing how to regurgitate stuff, and I see that happening a lot, and I did that a lot in my early days as an astrologer. There's a lot of nuance. I think it's a lifelong practice of learning, studying human behavior. Notice all the people who are Aquarians in your life. What do you see? Look at all the celebrities who are Aries: Diana Ross, Celine Dion, Jill Scott, Aretha Franklin, all these divas. Why is that?
It's observing, learning, doing your own personal development work, and then bringing that together with the principles and rules of astrology can make you a great astrologer. Our role as astrologers isn't to scare people, freak them out. I've heard people say, 'Oh, an astrologer told me I'd never get married. I'd never get pregnant.' That's just cruel. The role of astrologers is to support people in self-discovery and empowerment, and, of course, let them know if there's something they need to look out for. But to do it in a way that's empowering, it takes practice.
When we started doing it, I would talk to people about their moon sign, and they'd be like, what are you talking about? Before it went wild on the internet and social media, there weren't a bunch of tools or calculators or apps. But over the last 15 years, astrology became more accessible, because you could do a free chart online.
And then I think Trump coming into office [in 2016] and all the breakdowns from that did wonders for astrology, because people started to go, 'Why is this happening?' When something happens in the world that doesn't make sense, we want to come home to our souls. We want to come home to the one place of security that is self-knowledge.
So people's interests in trauma, attachment styles, astrology, I think it's all part of somewhat of a coping mechanism. It's also a knowing that we all have that truth that resides inside of us. It's kind of an anchor and a centering. If I can learn my own tendencies by understanding my astrology chart, I can navigate this world even when the world seems to be going bonkers.
Yeah, but I still think there's a lot of diminishing ways that people think about [astrology]. They try to wrap it up with a pretty bow like, all Geminis are like this or that. I think a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing, too. I've heard of people writing other people off, because they didn't like their sign or saying, 'I don't date Geminis,' and that's silly. Everybody is different.
The idea that there's a fixed way to interpret anything. There are also a lot of people who are learning the rules of astrology, which I think is important, but then they get really, really serious about the rules, and they forget that astrology is meant as a tool for understanding, not interpreting so literally.
That's what's so interesting about astrology is it's at once this very defined mathematical system, and also nowadays, something that's subject for enlightened interpretation rather than rigid, by-the-books interpretation.

"The scariest thing in your life is to be in the club, and having Mike Tyson talking to your ear" - Baron Davis recalls almost getting in the fight with Iron Mike in the club

"The scariest thing in your life is to be in the club, and having Mike Tyson talking to your ear" - Baron Davis recalls almost getting in the fight with Iron Mike in the club originally appeared on Basketball Network. There are plenty of wild stories from All-Star weekends over the years. From those on the hardwood to those, a little less known, that happen in the hazed atmosphere of a packed club or any other place that players go to blow off their steam. But every now and then, a story stands out because it involves someone with an aura that is so big that it fills the entire room, or in this case, the club. That's exactly what happened to Baron Davis, who found himself in a very unexpected situation during one of those downtime nights with his teammate and good friend Jason Richardson. The two were out at the club, relaxing and taking a breather from a disappointing season. At the time, the Golden State Warriors were nowhere near playoff contention, so the vibes were more "we'll get them next year" than anything else. Davis and J-Rich were just talking hoops (mostly) and sipping drinks, when that whole vibe shifted in an instant. "The next thing you know, Mike Tyson is right here," said Davis, while pointing his hand right next to his ear. "And Don Julio (J-Rich) was like, 'Oh, sh-t, that's Mike Tyson…'" "So he started whispering in my ear, talking in the club, dead in my ear. That was the one time… The scariest thing in your life is to be in the club, and having Mike Tyson talking to your ear, and he's mad at you. He is like, 'Man, what's up with you, looking all fat and sh-t,' I'm like, 'Damn, bro, he about to take me out," B-Diddy recalled with a smile, now that he is far away from that situation. Davis jokes about Tyson whispering Now, it's one thing to have a run-in with a celebrity. It's another when that celebrity is Mike Tyson, the man who once bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear in the middle of a heavyweight title fight. So yeah, Baron had every reason to be on edge, especially with Tyson whispering directly into what he surely hoped would remain his fully intact ear. Tyson's presence alone is intimidating enough. But when he starts talking low and personal, you start thinking about your life decisions real fast. Baron didn't know if he was in for a joke, a lecture or a left hook incoming. Davis may have been one of the flashiest, toughest point guards of his generation, but even he had to admit: when Iron Mike gets in your ear, you don't talk back. You just pray that he leaves you Mike believes that Jordan is the GOAT Interestingly enough, Iron Mike might have given a night to remember for Baron in a club, but when it comes to basketball, he's a certified fan. And not just of the game, but of another Michael who left people shaken for entirely different reasons. Tyson's love and respect for Michael Jordan indeed runs deep. Back in 2022 on "Club Random" with Bill Maher, Tyson opened up about what separated MJ from every other hooper who's ever laced them up. For Mikes, both of them frankly, it was never just about talent; it was the mental warfare, the tunnel vision of success, the sacrifice… "The wholeness and the determination," Tyson said of Jordan at the time. "The willingness to sacrifice. You only do that by sacrifice. Only sacrificing can make you the best in the world. Nothing else. You have to sacrifice." So, yeah, Tyson might roast you in the club. He might even scare you half to death if you're Davis. But when it comes to basketball, he's got nothing but respect for the story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

Lady Gaga Debuted New Track ‘Kill For Love' at Last Night's Mayhem Ball in Las Vegas

On July 16, Lady Gaga kicked off her highly anticipated Mayhem Ball Tour at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Of the many songs on the set list, one was a surprise. She performed 'Kill For Love,' the Mayhem bonus track, in full for the first time. In the song, Gaga is a 'monster on the prowl' and sings about how she would 'kill for love.' In the first verse, she sings: 'The moon is callin', all the bad boys come to play / You caught me howlin', there's a wolf inside of me / You know what I am, baby, and I know you're gonna be mine.' In her ELLE February 2025 cover story, Gaga spoke about the making of Mayhem. 'The chaos I thought was long gone is fully intact and ready to greet me whenever I'd like,' she said. 'Part of the message of even the first song on the album is that your demons are with you in the beginning and they are with you in the end, and I don't mean it in a bleak way. Maybe we can make friends sooner with this reality instead of running all the time.' The Mayhem Ball Tour is set to continue in Las Vegas on July 18 and 19 before heading to San Francisco, California for shows at the Chase Theater on July 22, 24, and 26. You can still get tickets here. 'Kill For Love' is not yet available to stream on Spotify (for now, it only appears on the Target exclusive CD), but you can read the full lyrics below:

Megan Thee Stallion praises 'kind' Klay Thompson as pair make red carpet debut

Megan Thee Stallion and Klay Thompson are making their red carpet debut. The "Hiss" hitmaker, 30, and four-time NBA champion, 35, looked smitten at the rapper's inaugural Pete & Thomas Foundation Gala in New York City on July 16. During a red carpet interview, the "WAP" collaborator told People magazine that "I won't tell you how and I won't tell you when, but it was a movie that (Thompson is) the nicest person I've ever met in my life." The rapper – who coordinated with her NBA All-Star boyfriend in matching black looks – also told Page Six that she has "never dated somebody so kind," telling the outlet that "this is my first relationship where I've ever been with somebody who's genuinely a nice person, and he makes me genuinely happy.' "I'm just grateful that he's here by my side and he feels the same way about me," she continued. The game-changing couple went public over the weekend when Thompson posted a carousel of photos July 13 featuring a shot of him and the Houston rapper in an intimate embrace. Later in the slideshow, another shot shows just their hands clasped together, beachside, Thomspon's blue and gold Rolex paired with Megan's baby pink acrylics and abalone shell jewelry. The post is captioned simply "Sweet Bells son 🌴 🥥," the emojis no doubt a nod to the Bahamas, where the two appeared to be vacationing. Thompson's father, former NBA player Mychal Thompson, is Bahamian. Fans of the pair first spotted Thompson in Megan's Instagram post days earlier, sparking romance rumors between the respective powerhouses. The Texas A-listers are the Lone Star State's newest power couple. After over a decade with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson was traded to the Dallas Mavericks last year while Megan is a Texas native, born in San Antonio and raised in Houston.
