After too many weeks of windy weather, we were blessed with blazing sunshine and calm conditions on Thursday evening when we ran a free pickleball session on our courts that now benefit from permanent bright yellow lines.
We were pleased to welcome some new faces along with others who had enjoyed our previous open court sessions that ended at the end of June.
Some tennis members also took the opportunity to have a go at the game, and everyone enjoyed the evening.

De Minaur opens Washington campaign with solid win

Alex de Minaur has made an impressive start to his Washington Open campaign, notching a straight-sets victory over China's Bu Yunchaokete. Playing his first event since his heartbreaking defeat to Novak Djokovic in the fourth round at Wimbledon, the Australian No.1 claimed a morale-boosting 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 win to set up a last-16 clash with Czech Jiri Lehecka. As seventh seed at the tournament, de Minaur was favourite to see off world No.75 Bu. Now the Australian can take heart from a solid performance at the hardcourt ATP 500 tournament as he builds towards next month's US Open, where last year he reached his third consecutive grand slam quarter-final. In 2018, then ranked No.72, he made a surprise run to his first ATP 500 final, where he lost 6-2 6-4 to Alexander Zverev. Now 26, the world No.13 will look to make further progression at the Washington Open after racking up his 280th career win and 31st this season as he continues his quest to return to the top 10. However, there was no such joy for De Minaur's compatriot Aleksandar Vukic, the Sydneysider suffering a 6-3 6-2 defeat to the top-seeded Taylor Fritz. American Fritz was making his first appearance since his impressive semi-final run at Wimbledon, where he gave Carlos Alcaraz a real test. And Australia's world No.24 Alexei Popyrin is also out after a bruising 7-5 5-7 6-3 defeat to China's Yibing Wu, who claimed his first win over a top-25 player in over two years in two hours and 37 minutes.

NBCUniversal considering to launch a sports cable network, WSJ reports

(Reuters) -Comcast's NBCUniversal is considering launching a sports cable network that would feature content also on its Peacock platform, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The potential channel, which would be offered in specialized packages, could debut as early as the fall, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. According to the report, the proposed channel would primarily feature sports that are also streamed on NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming platform. The network would be offered to cable and satellite providers as part of specialty channel packages, the report added. Talks remain at an early stage and a final decision regarding the launch of the network has not yet been made, WSJ said. NBCUniversal and its parent Comcast did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. The news stands in stark contrast to the broader challenges of the industry, as traditional television continues to lose ground to the rise of on-demand content and the growing trend of cord-cutting. However, live sports remain a bright spot, thriving even as other segments struggle. Meanwhile, NBCU is moving forward with plans to spin off most of its cable networks into a new company, signaling a significant shift in its media strategy. Taylor Fritz starts hard-court circuit with a win at the DC Open. Venus Williams loses in doubles

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top-seeded Taylor Fritz got his North American hard-court season off to a strong start by hitting 11 aces and saving the only break point he faced in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Aleksandar Vukic at the DC Open on Wednesday. Fritz is coming off a semifinal run on the grass of Wimbledon. He will be trying to replicate last year's strong showing in this portion of the season, when he reached his first Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open. After getting a first-round bye, Fritz now will play in the third round against Matteo Arnaldi, who eliminated No. 16 Lorenzo Sonego 7-5, 7-5. Seeded men advancing included No. 7 Alex de Minaur, No. 8 Daniil Medvedev and No. 11 Jiri Lehecka, but No. 10 Alexei Popyrin was defeated by qualifier Wu Yibing 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. Venus Williams' run in doubles with partner Hailey Baptiste ended in the second round with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 loss in a champion's tiebreaker to second-seeded Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai. The 45-year-old Williams is competing at her first tournament in more than a year — and first in doubles since 2022 — and she and Baptiste won their first-round match on Monday. Williams will play her second-round singles match Thursday against Magdalena Frech. On Tuesday, Williams became the second-oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match, beating Payton Stearns — who is 23 — in straight sets. In women's singles play Wednesday, unseeded Anna Kalinskaya eliminated No. 8 seed Magda Linette 6-4, 6-0. ___ AP tennis:
