FBM KLCI closes at intra-day high for second session as investors regain risk appetite

The Star2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia finished at its intra-day high for the second straight session on Thursday, driven by global optimism and the latest round of government fiscal aid that led investors to be back in the local market.
At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) gained 10.53 points, or 0.69 per cent, to close at an intra-day high of 1,540.32, compared to Wednesday's close of 1,529.79.
The index opened 1.26 points higher at 1,531.05 and moved between 1,529.71 and 1,540.32 throughout the trading session.
Gainers led losers in the broader market 502 to 474, while 496 counters were unchanged and 1,044 untraded, with seven suspended.
Turnover, however, slipped to 2.97 billion shares worth RM2.3 billion from 3.27 billion shares worth RM2.26 billion on Wednesday.
SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the FBM KLCI traded firmer buoyed by hopes that the worst of the tariff storm may be behind as the United States (US)-Japan deal, inked at 15 per cent, has the market betting that other trading partners, including Malaysia could secure similar outcomes, potentially keeping tariffs below the 20 per cent mark.

RM1.9t in IPOs: Bursa Malaysia tops SE Asia's capital market surge in H1 2025, says CEO

KAMPAR, July 26 — Bursa Malaysia has maintained its lead position in initial public offering (IPO) activities in South-east Asia, recording a market value exceeding RM1.9 trillion in the first half of 2025. Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed said this achievement reflects the strength of the country's capital market and also the business community's confidence in Bursa Malaysia as a partner for long-term growth. 'Retail investors' participation remains strong and continues to be a major contributor to the country's equity market. The average daily trading value (ADV) of retail investors remains stable at about RM450 million, in line with pre-Covid-19 levels, as of the middle of this year,' he said in his speech at the 2025 Perak Stock Carnival at Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR) here today. Fad'l added that there are more than 113,000, or eight per cent of active retail investors in Perak, out of a total of 1.4 million in Malaysia, with nearly 6,000 new Central Depository System (CDS) accounts opened as of the middle of this year. He said Perak's potential for further growth in the capital market is very high with its 2.5 million population. 'However, despite these impressive figures, our priority is to build retail investors who are knowledgeable, responsible and confident about their investments,' he said. Bursa Malaysia also emphasised the need to raise awareness about the growing issue of investment fraud, with the police reporting more than 2,000 cases in the first quarter of this year, he said. The exchange is intensifying financial literacy programmes such as Sens-Ability, and providing various educational materials for new and experienced investors as a preventive measure, he said. 'Bursa Malaysia also introduced investment products like BR Capital, Bursa Gold Dinar, and MyBursa to cater to various investor segments. 'We encourage everyone present to leverage the knowledge-sharing sessions and opportunities provided throughout this carnival to make informed and wise investment decisions,' he added. The carnival, held for the first time in Perak, is part of a series of programmes that started in 2022, after previous events in Pahang, Terengganu and Perlis to strengthen investment literacy among the public. Perak's Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Corridor Development committee chairman Loh Sze Yee and UTAR research and commercialisation division vice-president Prof Dr Zuraidah Abd Manaf were also present at the event. — Bernama

Bursa faces choppy week ahead as US tariff decision looms, says analyst

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — The risk of higher United States (US) tariffs on Malaysia as the Aug 1 deadline draws near is likely to weigh on Bursa Malaysia next week, although domestically-oriented counters are expected to remain relatively resilient, supported by firm internal demand and fiscal tailwinds. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said volatility is expected to intensify as markets approach a critical inflection point in global trade policy. 'Domestically-oriented counters on Bursa Malaysia are likely to remain relatively resilient. However, export-driven sectors may continue to face pressure in the absence of a favourable resolution to the tariff negotiations,' he told Bernama. He noted that no formal announcement has been made on the revised US tariff schedule for Malaysia. 'Should Malaysia succeed in securing a rate below the symbolic 20 per cent threshold, we anticipate renewed investor interest, particularly in the manufacturing and electrical and electronics sectors. Until then, most investors are expected to adopt a wait-and-see approach, prioritising capital preservation over risk-taking,' he said. Regionally, market focus is shifting towards renewed US–China trade diplomacy as Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng is set to lead high-level negotiations in Sweden from July 27–30, ahead of the expiry of the 90-day tariff suspension on Aug 12. 'The outcome will be instrumental in shaping regional trade sentiment and broader market tone heading into August,' Mohd Sedek said. Globally, investor attention remains fixed on a packed US macroeconomic calendar, particularly with the upcoming the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on July 30, the June Personal Consumption Expenditure inflation print and July non-farm payrolls, which will provide important policy signals. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said market participants will turn their focus to China's July Purchasing Managers Index as well as Eurozone Consumer Price Index. For the week just ended, optimism spurred by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's 'appreciation package' and renewed confidence in domestic fiscal support lifted utilities and consumer counters, but the momentum proved short-lived as broad-based selling later overshadowed mid-week support from telco stocks. For the week under review, the benchmark index rose 7.90 points to 1,533.76 on Friday from 1,525.86 a week earlier. The FBM Emas Index increased 26.99 points to 11,506.82 and the FBMT 100 Index gained 28.03 points to 11,269.72, but the FBM Emas Shariah Index slid 8.89 points to 11,528.98, the FBM 70 Index dipped 90.15 points to 16,607.57 and the FBM ACE Index dropped 32.77 points to 4,639.02. By sector, the Financial Services Index jumped 99.4 points to 17,454.23, the Plantation Index reduced 7.10 points to 7,434.79 and the Energy Index went up 0.21 of a point to 739.85. Weekly turnover narrowed to 11.92 billion units worth RM11.43 billion from 15.53 billion units worth RM11.77 billion in the previous week. Main Market volume slid to 6.63 billion units valued at RM9.70 billion compared with 6.73 billion units valued at RM10.07 billion previously. Warrant turnover grew to 7.10 billion units worth RM1.15 billion from 6.83 billion units worth RM966.72 million in the preceding week. ACE Market volume shrank to 1.68 billion units valued at RM577.05 million versus 1.97 billion units valued at RM729.96 million previously. — Bernama

Ringgit seen hovering around RM4.22–RM4.24 next week amid Fed policy hold

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — The ringgit is expected to hover between RM4.22 and RM4.24 next week as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is anticipated to maintain its policy rate, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said this outlook is tied to the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, scheduled for July 29–30, 2025. 'Based on the interest rate futures market, the Fed is likely to keep the Federal Funds Rate steady at 4.50 per cent. Technical indicators suggest that the US dollar-ringgit exchange rate is currently in a neutral zone,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes expects the ringgit to trade within a relatively narrow range of 4.2080–4.2280, with trade-related headlines and external sentiment continuing to drive short-term direction. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week better against the greenback, closing at 4.2195/2245 versus 4.2410/2455 previously. However, the local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit depreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8529/8565 from 2.8517/8549 and declined versus the euro to 4.9507/9566 from 4.9336/9388 at the end of last week. However, it gained against the British pound to 5.6786/6853 from 5.6999/7060 last Friday. Against Asean currencies, the ringgit trended higher. The local note firmed against the Singapore dollar to 3.2937/2978 from 3.3027/3065, strengthened versus the Thai baht to 13.0268/0478 from 13.3027/3065, rose versus the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/258.9 from 260.2/260.6 previously, and improved against the Philippine peso to 7.38/7.40 from 7.41/7.43 last Friday. — Bernama
