
Snowflake to acquire Crunchy Data to enhance Postgres for AI
The acquisition aims to deliver Snowflake Postgres, a database platform designed to enable developers with PostgreSQL compatibility while maintaining governance, security, and operational standards necessary for enterprise-grade and mission-critical AI applications.
Businesses in a range of industries have shown growing demand for a secure, enterprise-ready PostgreSQL solution for their core applications. The proposed integration of Crunchy Data into Snowflake Postgres intends to address these needs, offering production-ready compatibility within environments such as those compliant with FedRAMP regulations.
The popularity of PostgreSQL is reflected by its adoption rate, with 49% of developers reportedly using the database. Snowflake's new Postgres offering is expected to streamline how developers build, deploy, and scale AI agents and applications by leveraging Crunchy Data's existing technology, engineered for all stages of the enterprise workload lifecycle.
Key features provided by Crunchy Data include access to essential performance metrics, scalable architecture, and a user-friendly interface, which Snowflake aims to bring to developers creating AI-driven enterprise applications within its platform.
Organisations currently using PostgreSQL, including existing Snowflake partners such as Blue Yonder and LandingAI, are expected to benefit from accelerated development and operational efficiency as they adapt to the evolving use of AI agents in business processes.

After the acquisition, Snowflake intends to maintain support for Crunchy Data's existing customer base and participate actively in the PostgreSQL community while integrating Crunchy Data's capabilities with its own products. Crunchy Data's expertise is seen as complementing Snowflake's Unistore, which combines transactional and analytical data handling, by providing a transactional solution that fully embraces PostgreSQL compatibility.

Snowflake Postgres will initially be launched in private preview. The closing of the acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions.

LevelBlue has entered into an agreement to acquire Trustwave, expanding its capabilities in managed security services and managed detection and response. The acquisition of Trustwave from MC2 Security Fund is expected to create the world's largest independent, pure-play managed security services provider. This move closely follows LevelBlue's recent agreement to purchase Aon's cybersecurity consulting business, further consolidating its position in the cyber defence sector. Expanded capabilities Trustwave's Fusion Platform and cloud-native MDR service will be integrated into LevelBlue's offering. The merger aims to deliver 24/7 cybersecurity protection across global markets, enhancing visibility and control over security operations for organisations of varying scales. The combined portfolio is anticipated to create a strategically unified managed defence platform. It will leverage LevelBlue's artificial intelligence-driven threat detection capabilities and Trustwave's SpiderLabs unit for threat research and intelligence. The joint offering targets organisations operating across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments. Trustwave recently achieved full authorised status from the US Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) and StateRAMP, which will enable LevelBlue to meet requirements for US federal and state projects, including those with stringent security demands such as the Department of Defense and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). Percona launches free open source encryption for PostgreSQL data
Percona has introduced Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) for PostgreSQL as a fully open source and production-ready solution. This development allows organisations to encrypt data at rest, ensuring compliance with strict regulatory standards such as PCI DSS v4.0, while eliminating licensing fees and avoiding vendor lock-in. The new capability is designed to enable businesses to secure sensitive data on their PostgreSQL platforms without incurring additional costs or facing usage restrictions. The TDE extension, known as pg_tde, is being made generally available as part of the Percona Distribution for PostgreSQL. It aims to remove a significant obstacle that previously prevented many organisations from implementing enterprise-level data encryption in open source database environments. Until now, robust encryption options for PostgreSQL often came with proprietary licensing agreements or were not considered suitable for production use within regulated industries. Organisations in sectors ranging from finance to healthcare and eCommerce are increasingly required to comply with regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, SOX, and PCI DSS v4.0. These standards often mandate strong encryption protocols to safeguard cardholder data and other sensitive information, with storage encryption alone now frequently deemed insufficient. "Data security and compliance are top priorities for organizations in every industry, but too often, robust encryption has been locked behind paywalls or proprietary add-ons," said Liz Warner, CTO of Percona. Organisations can employ granular encryption policies, with the ability to encrypt at the table level and use individual keys for each database, supporting multi-tenant environments and enabling tailored encryption strategies. One of the solution's notable attributes is seamless integration, allowing businesses to introduce encryption into their back-end systems without making changes to application code or disrupting existing operations. Key management is streamlined via integration with major Key Management Services (KMS) including Hashicorp, Thales, Fortanix, and OpenBao, assisting businesses in enforcing security policies and managing encryption keys. Encrypted databases can also benefit from online key rotation and continued encryption management with minimal operational overhead. According to Percona, the encryption has a minimal performance impact, meaning organisations can enhance security without compromising user experience or system speed. Percona is offering 24/7 support and related services for businesses deploying pg_tde, include assistance with initial setup, configuration, and ongoing management. The extension is immediately available as part of the Percona Distribution for PostgreSQL and is supported under Percona's broader service offerings.
