Bihar: Relief for MLA's rival as court grants him bail in Mokama firing case
The process for Sonu Singh's release from Bhagalpur High Security Jail will begin soon.
Sonu Singh was arrested on January 24, 2025, two days after a violent clash on January 22, in Nauranga Jalalpur village, Mokama, under Pachmahala police station limits.
The incident involved Sonu, his brother Monu, and Anant Singh with his supporters.
The dispute began over a brick kiln business managed by Mukesh Kumar of Hemja village, with Sonu-Monu accusing Mukesh of embezzling Rs 65 lakh and locking his house.
Mukesh approached Anant Singh for help. When the issue escalated, Anant Singh and his supporters arrived in 10 vehicles, leading to a huge confrontation.
More than 100 rounds of firing took place between them. Sources have said that both sides used sophisticated weapons during the firing of each other.
An intense gunfight and violence emerged on that occasion, but Patna police claimed to have recovered only three shells from the scene.
One of Anant Singh's supporters was injured in that firing incident. He sustained a gunshot injury to his leg.
The incident attracted national attention, raising questions about Bihar's law and order as both parties continued media interactions post-incident before arrests were made.
Sonu Singh was arrested first, followed by Anant Singh's surrender at Barh court the same day.
Sonu was initially lodged in Phulwarisharif Jail, Patna, and later shifted to Bhagalpur Jail.
Anant Singh is currently in Beur Jail, Patna, with his bail hearing expected soon.
Sonu Singh's legal team will now proceed with formalities for his release.
The case remains politically sensitive in Mokama and Bihar's undercurrent politics as Anant Singh's bail plea is also pending.

ED raids 16 places in Vasai-Virar, money worth Rs 12 crore frozen
After conducting day-long searches on Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has frozen Rs 12 crore worth bank balances, demat accounts, fixed deposits, mutual funds and also seized Rs 25 lakh in cash during raids at 16 premises of architects, liaison agents, and others linked to the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) officials and builders allegedly involved in the illegal construction of 41 buildings in the region. This is the second round of searches by the central agency in the VVMC area in two months in connection with a money laundering probe into an illegal building construction case, suspecting a well-oiled syndicate operating behind it. In the first round, the agency searched the premises of VVMC officials, rogue builders and their associates. In the second round, which also covered some of the premises in Juhu (belonging to a known architect) and Kandivali areas of Mumbai, the ED focused on the premises of liaison officers, architects, and middlemen who allegedly coordinated between builders and VVMC officials. The middlemen were involved in routing the bribe paid to VVMC officials by rogue builders for regularising illegal constructions, agency sources said. The ED has also seized incriminating documents during the search, indicating gross forgery and fabrication of documents done to bypass rules and regularise unauthorised projects. The suspect architects and liasoning officials are suspected to have played an important role here, another source said. The anti-money laundering agency suspect that the accused VVMC officials in connivance with the rogue builder deliberately overlooked irregularities for monetary gains. In May, the agency raided 13 locations in Nalasopara, Vasai, Virar and Hyderabad as well. It seized approximately Rs 8.6 crore in cash and Rs 23.25 crore worth of diamond-studded jewellery and bullion from the house of Y S Reddy, deputy director of town planning, Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC). The ED's money laundering investigation is based on multiple FIRs registered by the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police commissionerate against builders, local henchmen and others for 'illegal construction of residential/commercial buildings on government and private land' under the jurisdiction of VVMC since 2009. ED suspects a large-scale scam involving illegal construction in the Vasai Virar area, with complicity from officials of VVMC. According to the ED, 41 illegal buildings in question were constructed on the land reserved for 'sewage treatment plant' and 'dumping ground' as per the approved development plan of Vasai Virar city. 'The accused builders deceived the public at large by constructing illegal buildings on such land and subsequently developers sell flats to people by fabricating approval documents,' the ED said. 'Even with prior knowledge that these buildings were unauthorised and would eventually be demolished, the developers misled the people by selling rooms in these buildings, thereby committing serious fraud,' the agency added. The 41 buildings were demolished on February 20, 2025, by the order of the Bombay High Court, which the Supreme Court later upheld. The families living in these buildings were left homeless. The agency stated that the key perpetrators of the alleged scam in the VVMC area have been identified as Sitaram Gupta and Arun Gupta, among others and further investigation is on.

Police release sketch of suspect in Pune Solapur highway sexual assault, robbery
The Pune police on Wednesday released a sketch of one of the two suspects who sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl at knifepoint and robbed three women travelling with her in a car on the Pune-Solapur highway on Monday. Police have made an appeal to approach police if anyone has information about the suspect. The minor, who was sexually assaulted, and the three women, who were robbed, were part of a seven-member group from three families known to each other from a village in Pune district. The group was on its way to the temple town of Pandharpur in Solapur district. According to police, besides the 17-year-old girl and the three women passengers, two 17-year-old boys and a 70-year-old driver were in the van. Around 4.15 am on Monday, around 10 kilometres from Bhigwan town, two unidentified men approached the car when the driver stopped the vehicle by the roadside to relieve himself. Brandishing sharp weapons, the duo robbed three women of gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lakh. One of the men dragged away the girl behind a tea stall and sexually assaulted her, threatening her at knife point. The two men had covered their faces with masks, said police. The Pune Rural police launched an extensive manhunt for the suspects. A total of 10 teams were formed for the probe. 'Investigation revealed that the assailants threw chilli powder at the occupants of the vehicle. When one of the suspects was blowing the chilli powder at the occupants, he had momentarily lowered his mask. Based on the description given by the occupants, a sketch of the suspect has been prepared. We are making an appeal to approach us with information about such a suspect,' said an officer who is part of the probe. Police have made available contact numbers where people can call to provide information about the suspect. After Ramanagara became Bengaluru South, Bengaluru Rural district renamed Bengaluru North
Over a month after renaming Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South district, Karnataka's cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposal to rename Bengaluru Rural district as Bengaluru North district. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision while addressing a news conference following a special cabinet meeting at Nandi Hills in Chikkaballapura district. This was among the two name change proposals approved by the cabinet; the other was to rename Bagepalli in Chikkaballapura district as Chikkaballapur. In May, the state government renamed Ramanagara district, located southwest of Bengaluru district, 'to benefit from the international reputation enjoyed by Bengaluru'. This was after the Ministry of Home Affairs refused a no-objection certificate for the name change, for which the state government submitted a proposal in July 2024. The proposal to rename Bengaluru Rural district was based on petitions from legislators representing the district, including Food and Civil Supplies Minister K H Muniyappa. The change was sought to attract more investors, as Bengaluru International Airport, Foxconn's iPhone assembly plant, and several business parks are located in the district. The cabinet also decided to rename Bengaluru University after former prime minister Manmohan Singh. During the cabinet meeting, projects worth Rs 3,000 crore were cleared. The cabinet meeting at Nandi Hills dealt primarily with the Bengaluru division. In the last two months, cabinet meetings were held at Kalaburagi (Kalaburagi division) and MM Hills (Mysuru division). A special cabinet meeting is also scheduled at Vijayapura, to clear proposals related to the Belagavi division.
