Rise in assaults on Holme House prison staff
Assaults on staff at a prison were "considerably higher" in 2024 than the previous year, inspectors have said. The Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) said staff at HMP Holme House in Stockton were assaulted by prisoners 90 times in 2024, compared to 40 such incidents in 2023.It said nine of the assaults last year were considered to be "serious". The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has been approached for comment.
In a report published on Thursday, the IMB said there were 324 incidents of violence among prisoners in 2024 compared to 298 the previous year.
'Substance misuse'
Inspectors also found that force was used by staff on prisoners 856 times in 2024, compared to 468 times in 2023 and 268 occurrences in 2022. They also said seven prisoners were each subject to force on more than 10 occasions that year, with force used on one particular prisoner 21 times that year.The IMB also found a number of prisoners "under the influence of illicit substances" on each day of its inspections. "Substance misuse continues to be a significant problem in the prison," the report said.At any one time, almost half of the prison population is being helped by a non-clinical drug recovery programme, the team said.The report revealed that of the 1,350 prisoners released from the site last year, 112 individuals had no arranged accommodation for the night of their release.

Journalist Sandy Gall has been praised as a 'giant and a gentleman' after his death at the age of 97. His journalism career spanned more than 50 years and he was a renowned foreign correspondent for ITN and the face of ITV's News At Ten from 1963 until 1992. Despite becoming a news presenter in 1970, he continued to report first-hand, spending weeks travelling on horseback to follow the Mujahideen in their guerilla war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. ‘Knight' rushed to hospital after SWORD accidentally pierces his helmet during medieval battle reenactment at castle
A MAN involved in a medieval reenactment is in a serious condition after suffering a horrendous sword injury. The 37-year-old man was wearing body armour when his opponent's sword entered his visor just before 3pm. 2 He has been left in a serious condition after suffering a head injury. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward after the incident on Sunday at Bodiam Castle, East Sussex. They are specifically looking for photographs or video footage of the incident. Detective Inspector Barry Chandler from Sussex Police said: "A man was unfortunately injured during the combat re-enactment. 'We are treating the incident as an accident and we are offering support to his family. His opponent, a 36-year-old man also from Horsham, and the organisers are helping us with our enquiries. 'We know the re-enactment had drawn a large crowd and understand that anyone who witnessed the scene could have found this distressing. 'We are appealing to anyone who has photographs or videos of the interaction that led to the injury to contact us so we can gain a clear understanding of what happened.' The man is being treated at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. 2
