Showers offer some relief but bring Bhopal to grinding halt

Bhopal: Incessant rain lashed Bhopal on Monday in intermittent spells. The showers kept the day temperature in check, but they slowed down the pace of the city. Rainfall activity was expected to continue in Bhopal and a few places in the state may also witness heavy showers.
In the past 24 hours until Monday morning, 27.1 mm of rainfall was recorded in Bhopal, and from Monday morning to 5:30 pm in the evening, the city witnessed 28 mm.
According to the regional meteorological department, the rainfall activity was triggered by a cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh, with a monsoon trough extending over the state.
The day temperature in Bhopal on Monday was recorded at 25.5 degrees celsius, four degrees less than the normal mark, while the night temperature in the city was 23.2 degrees celsius, which was at the normal mark.
The city recorded 28 mm rain from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm on Monday. In the forecast for Bhopal on Tuesday the meteorological dept stated there would be generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain. Day and night temperature would be respectively 26 degrees celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, while average wind speed will be twenty four kilometers per hour.
Met officials on Monday issued alerts for very heavy rainfall in isolated places across Shahdol, Jabalpur, and Narmadapuram divisions.

Yellow alerts for heavy rain have been issued in 27 districts for the next 48 hours, including Indore, Betul, Jabalpur, Sagar, Seoni, and Dindori. Moderate rain is expected to continue throughout the week, said met officials.
So far, Madhya Pradesh has recorded a significant 54% surplus rainfall in this monsoon season. The state has received 645.2 mm of rain against a normal of 418.4 mm, according to official figures.
The state's eastern region has borne the brunt of the downpour, logging an excess of 66% rainfall. Western Madhya Pradesh followed with a 44% surplus. At least 32 out of 52 districts have reported above-normal rainfall until July 28. Niwari, a district in east Madhya Pradesh, received the highest rainfall departure at 231% above normal, followed by Tikamgarh (158%), Chhatarpur (160%), and Jabalpur (40%). The western part saw sharp departures in districts like Sheopur (177%), Gwalior (181%), and Morena (138%).
Districts like Barwani (-12%), Dhar (-6%), and Indore (-32%) recorded deficient rainfall, while Khandwa, Khargone, and Shajapur reported marginally below normal rainfall figures.

While forecasters expect rain intensity to decline from August 5, heavy showers are likely to persist through August 6.

In a span of nine hours, the city recorded 34.7 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 5.30pm on Sunday. This is the highest rainfall that the district experienced this monsoon season. Malihabad tehsil in Lucknow received 52.5 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm. Due to relentless rain, the day temperature dropped to 28.5 degrees Celsius, which is 4.8 degrees below normal. Heavy showers continued in the city even after 5.30pm all through the evening and more rain was in store on Monday when the forecast is for an overcast sky with spells of rain/thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperature will be around 30 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively. There is a warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning very likely at isolated places. Heavy rain is very likely at isolated places, said Lucknow met director Manish Ranalkar. Currently, the monsoon trough is passing through Shamli, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow (all in Uttar Pradesh), Chhapra (Bihar), Bankura and Canning (West Bengal). Earlier, on Saturday afternoon, a nearly 45-minute downpour lashed the posh Trans-Gomti areas, Vibhuti Khand and adjoining localities of Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar, Ansal City and Golf City to leave some stretches in knee-deep water.

The minimum temperature settled at 24.2 degrees Celsius, 2.9 notches below the season's average.
