Japan's latest particle detector on way to 2028 completion

HIDA, Gifu Prefecture—The cutting-edge elementary particle observation facility here where it is hoped proton decay will be observed for the first time is on track to open in 2028 with a giant underground cavity nearing completion.
The excavation site for the Hyper-Kamiokande facility, which lies 600 meters below ground, was shown to the media on June 28.
The Hyper-Kamiokande, whose construction calls for about 65 billion yen ($450 million), is the third-generation detector after the Kamiokande and the Super-Kamiokande facilities, which helped Japanese scientists earn two Nobel Prizes in Physics.
At the latest observatory, scientists hope to observe the decay of protons, which could lead to a third Nobel Prize, among other physical phenomena.
The facility is also expected to provide clues to the birth of the universe and other materials.
Journalists were allowed into a cavity 69 meters in diameter and 94 meters in height, one of the largest of its kind.
The opening has been created by blasting hard bedrock over more than two years, and the excavation work will be completed in July.
Masato Shiozawa, a professor of elementary particle studies at the University of Tokyo's Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, was on hand to report on the status of the project on June 28.
'We are relieved now that completion of the cavity, which does not have any parallel in the world, has come into sight,' said Shiozawa, co-representative of the Hyper-Kamiokande project, which involves 640 researchers from 22 countries.
'The hard part of installing equipment through international cooperation still lies ahead of us,' he said. 'We want to generate research results that could change people's understanding of elementary particles and surprise everyone.'
Work will start in August to build a cylindrical tank, which will be filled with 260,000 tons of ultrapure water, and install 20,000 to 40,000 ultrasensitive photosensors.
The sensors are designed to capture faint light that will be released by neutrinos, a type of elementary particle.
The amount of water that can be held in the tank, which is greater than the Super-Kamiokande, will allow the Hyper-Kamiokande to obtain 8.4 times more data than its predecessor.
Construction for the project started in 2020, but designs have since been changed and completion has been delayed by about a year due to rising material prices.
Masatoshi Koshiba, a special university professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002 for the first detection of neutrinos, subatomic particles generated by a supernova explosion, at the original Kamiokande observatory that he built.
Takaaki Kajita, one of Koshiba's students and a distinguished university professor at the University of Tokyo, received the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that the elementary particles have mass, at the Super-Kamiokande.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Researchers from the University of Tokyo have unearthed what may be an ancient villa they believe belonged to the first Roman emperor, Augustus. What appear to be five large furnaces -- presumed to have served as boilers to heat an enormous bath -- were discovered in the ruins of an ancient Roman building in southern Italy, drawing keen interest from the archaeological community due to it being an exceptionally rare find. The researchers point out that Augustus, who boasted immense power as the founder of the Roman Empire, may have used the building as a guesthouse featuring a luxurious public bathhouse, or thermae, for entertaining influential people. The 3,650-square-meter ruins were buried beneath volcanic ash at the Somma Vesuviana site located at the northern foot of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that erupted in 79 AD and destroyed the ancient city of Pompeii. The research team headed by Mariko Muramatsu, professor of Italian studies at the university, began an archaeological survey in 2002. Since 2019, the team has excavated to about 15 meters below the surface, where they discovered the remains of five circular furnaces -- each about 1.4 meters in width -- lying in a row in a stratum dated to earlier than the mid-first century. The ruins are in an area once ruled by the Augustus family. Researchers say the discovery may strengthen the case that the villa belonged to Augustus, despite the lack of conclusive evidence. "There has never been a case where five large furnaces have been excavated from an Italian site. It makes sense as an explanation that no one else but the emperor could make such a magnificent feat possible," said Muramatsu. Through a process of elimination based on the size and design of the furnaces, it was ruled out that they had been used for cooking, firing earthenware or for heating rooms -- leaving a bathhouse as the remaining working theory. "The furnaces are the same shape as water heaters. It is almost certain that they were used to heat a large amount of water for a huge bath facility," said Masanori Aoyagi, former commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, who served as the first project head of the research team. Another piece of evidence supporting the team's theories is the fact that the site is located more than 200 kilometers from Rome. As the successor to the assassinated Julius Caesar, Augustus quelled a civil war and gained immense power, but the citizens of Rome were wary of him becoming a dictator. Aoyagi believes "Augustus built a guesthouse with a huge bath beyond Roman citizens' scrutiny in a bid to show his greatness to aristocrats and military officers and have them feel the Pax Romana (Roman peace) in the bath." In ancient Rome, thermae served as centers for interacting across social status, and the remains of huge bathhouses built by later emperors, such as Caracalla, can still be seen in the city. The remains of the five furnaces may soon be ranked equally with past thermae discoveries, Muramatsu suggested. The research team has already begun excavations on the south side of the furnace remains, and if the thermae theory holds water, they should find the remnants of a luxurious bathing pool in the vicinity of the furnaces. Mari Yamazaki, known for her award-winning manga series "Thermae Romae" about ancient Rome, said, "If the first emperor's villa had a luxurious bathhouse, it may have served as a reference in the design of bathhouses in later generations." She added, "I hope that the exciting discovery of bath cultures that connect ancient and modern times will continue." The University of Tokyo is soliciting donations for the continuation of the archaeological dig.

A Japanese research team has discovered a cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive, terminal disease that gradually weakens muscles throughout the body. The researchers found that when a gene that maintains protein quality stops functioning, motor neurons become damaged, leading to familial ALS—a form of the disease that runs in families. The discovery by the joint team, led by associate professor Toru Yamashita and professor Hiroyuki Ishiura from the Medical School at Okayama University, raises hopes for the development of new treatments. The results of their study were published on July 1 in the international scientific journal Acta Neuropathologica. ALS is a rare disease in which the motor neurons responsible for controlling muscle movement degenerate and decrease. As signals from the brain telling the body to move fail to reach the muscles, muscles begin to atrophy, eventually impairing even breathing. In Japan, it is estimated that there are more than 10,000 ALS patients. About 10 percent of these patients also have a family history of the disease, classified as familial ALS. The research team analyzed the genes of three patients with familial ALS. All three were found to have mutations in a gene known as DNAJC7. The functions of this gene are to repair damaged proteins and to prevent abnormal proteins from accumulating. Previous studies have confirmed that many ALS cases involve abnormal accumulation of a protein called TDP-43 in the cytoplasm of neurons in the cerebral cortex. The patients in this study were also found to have TDP-43 accumulations. Further experiments using cultured cells confirmed that when DNAJC7 does not function properly, abnormal aggregation of TDP-43 increases—while enhancing the function of DNAJC7 reduced the accumulation of TDP-43. 'We have now discovered that when the DNAJC7 gene does not function correctly, the abnormal aggregation of TDP-43 increases, leading to familial ALS,' Yamashita said. 'Because boosting the functions of DNAJC7 reduced the aggregation, our findings could lead to future treatments.'

The Japan Institute for Health Security assessed the benefits of a traditional "Japanese-style diet" comprising of soy products, cooked vegetables, mushrooms, fish, seaweed, and green tea, along with a modified version that added fruit, fresh vegetables and dairy products. While there are few studies on the Japanese diet's impact on mental health, such assessments of the Mediterranean diet -- which consists of vegetables, whole grains, olive oil and fish -- and depression have previously been conducted, the institute said. "Further research is required, but we hope the evidence shown among Japanese people can be used for public health measures in workplaces and areas concerning the prevention of depression," it said in a press release. The self-reported study was conducted among 12,499 employees from five companies, of whom 88 percent were male with an average age of 42.5 years. A total of 30.9 percent of the cohort exhibited depressive symptoms, but those who followed a typical Japanese diet were found to be less likely to do so. The researchers made efforts to isolate other potential factors that could influence the results. The institute said certain foods in the diet could be linked to improved well-being. Seaweed, soy products and the folic acid in vegetables assist in releasing neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, while oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids has anti-inflammatory effects. © KYODO
