Raipur: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, installed an automated radio synthesizer and Gallium generator in its nuclear medicine department. This facility allows the institute to produce next-generation PET radiotracers in-house.
AIIMS Raipur is now the only govt hospital in Chhattisgarh equipped with such advanced nuclear medicine infrastructure.
The Department of Nuclear Medicine now offers advanced PET-based imaging services for early diagnosis, staging, and personalised treatment strategies. The newly available tracers include PSMA PET for prostate cancer detection, DOTA PET for imaging neuroendocrine tumours and guiding peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), FAPI PET for cancers with low FDG uptake and fibrotic diseases, and Exendin PET for precise localisation of insulinomas.
Dr Mudalsha Ravina, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Nuclear Medicine, said these radiotracers improve diagnostic accuracy, especially in complex and systemic diseases. Prof (Dr) Renu Rajguru, Medical Superintendent and Head, ENT Department, said in-house radiotracer production will enhance patient throughput, reduce reliance on external vendors, and support timely treatment decisions.
Dr Shobhana Raju, Assistant Prof, Department of Nuclear Medicine, said the new Gallium-labelled tracers will usher in a new era in cancer theranostics.
This will promote therapy-oriented research and pave the way for personalised cancer treatments, particularly in prostate, gastrointestinal, and breast cancers. Sai Shiv Narayan, Medical Physicist, said automation ensures consistent tracer quality, enhances radiation safety, and streamlines workflow.
The department features high-end technologies including PET-CT, SPECT-CT, radioiodine uptake probe, robotic navigation for PET-guided biopsies, low-dose and high-dose therapies.
The department also runs an MD nuclear medicine programme. This new facility aims to provide affordable, specialised diagnosis and treatment for patients in Chhattisgarh.
Lt Gen Ashok Jindal (Retd.), Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Raipur, said this infrastructure upgrade shows their commitment to delivering advanced, affordable, and high-quality diagnostics in central India. He added that it complements their expanding oncology and metabolic disease services.

Services affected at AIIMS-Patna as doctors strike over MLA's 'high-handedness' enters third day

Healthcare services at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna remained affected for the third consecutive day on Sunday (August 3, 2025) as resident doctors continued their strike against the alleged high-handedness of Sheohar MLA Chetan Anand. Representatives of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) have called a general body meeting on Sunday (August 3, 2025) to discuss their future course of action. A delegation of the RDA members had met senior officials of the hospital on Saturday as efforts are being made to break the logjam. According to the RDA, Anand, the RJD-turned-JD(U) legislator, forcibly entered the hospital and assaulted doctors. The MLA has however said he and his wife were mistreated by hospital staffers. Both sides have filed FIRs in connection with the incident, the police said, noting that an investigation is underway. Full transparency "During the meeting, we were given assurances. We demand full transparency and accountability through the immediate public release of the CCTV footage related to the incident. This is essential to ensure truth prevails and justice is served," the RDA said in a statement on Saturday (August 2, 2025). "The administration assured us of full institutional legal assistance for resident doctors and security staff who have been falsely implicated. The administration also assured us that the process to install CCTV cameras in high-risk areas such as the Trauma Centre, Emergency Department, Labour Room, and ICUs will be initiated within 72 hours," it added. The RDA said that it was demanding the immediate quashing of the "false FIR" against a doctor. "We demand the invocation of sections of the Arms Act in the investigation, considering the grave threat posed by the presence of weapons in a healthcare setting," it said, adding that the strike will continue "until further notice". Emergency, OPD and other services were affected as a result of the strike. The allegations The RDA had earlier alleged, "The MLA, his wife and his armed guards forcibly entered the hospital area, physically assaulted security staff, threatened resident doctors with death and brandished a firearm within hospital premises. A hospital guard was brutally injured, and resident doctors were subjected to threats and abuse inside their own workplace." Mr. Anand had lodged a police complaint, alleging that staffers of AIIMS-Patna misbehaved with him and his wife during a visit to the hospital on Wednesday night. "My wife and I went to see one of my supporters admitted at AIIMS on Wednesday night. I was not allowed to enter the hospital with my security guard. This prompted my wife to intervene," he had said on Thursday. "At that moment, other staff members came and started misbehaving with my wife. They literally thrashed her. I had to intervene. My wife sustained injuries to her wrist and back. I was also held hostage by the staffers for some time. Finally, we went to the local police station and lodged a complaint," he added. The MLA's mother, Lovely Anand, is the JD(U) MP from the Sheohar Lok Sabha seat.

One of rarest neuro cases treated at AIIMS-R

Raipur: A 38-year-old woman suffering from spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) for over two months made a complete recovery following a rare endovascular procedure at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raipur. The condition, caused by a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, severely impacted her quality of life, leaving her unable to perform routine activities. A multidisciplinary team from the departments of neurosurgery, neurology, and radiology at AIIMS Raipur evaluated the patient. Dr Richa Singh Chauhan, a neuroradiologist, identified the underlying cause as SIH. She pinpointed a rare CSF-venous fistula (CSF-VF) at the right L1 vertebra using advanced neuroimaging and a lateral decubitus Digital Subtraction Myelography (DSM). In this condition, CSF abnormally drains into the venous system. The treatment was performed by a team of interventional neuroradiologists led by Dr Nihar Vijay Kathrani. They used a minimally invasive interventional radiology technique via the right femoral venous access to successfully seal the fistula. The patient experienced a complete resolution of her symptoms after the procedure. A follow-up MRI confirmed the normalisation of her intracranial pressure. The anaesthesia team was led by Prof. Dr Subrat Singha, head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, along with Dr Vankdavath Lavanya, Dr Ananya Rao, and Dr Hashil. Prof. Dr N.K. Bodhey, head of the Department of Radiodiagnosis, said CSF-venous fistula is an extremely rare and recently recognised cause of SIH. He added that fewer than five such cases have been diagnosed and treated in India. This is the first case to be both diagnosed and treated at an AIIMS or Institute of National Importance (INI) in India. Lt Gen (retd) Ashok Jindal, executive director and CEO of AIIMS Raipur, congratulated the team. He said the case reflects the institution's multidisciplinary strength and its advanced diagnostic and interventional capabilities. The case sets a new standard in managing rare neurological disorders in India. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
