Behold, the electric Bentley of the future is here

Auto Express6 hours ago
Behold our first glimpse of the Bentley of tomorrow, inspired by the British luxury brand's rich heritage and famous grand tourers from the early 20th century. And as you've probably already guessed, there's no W12 engine or even a V8 under that impossibly long bonnet.
The Bentley EXP 15 is a concept, and will never go into production, but it represents how the marque plans to seamlessly blend tradition and innovation in future models, while also providing some clues about its first fully electric car, which is due to be unveiled in 2026 and is, of course, going to be built in Crewe.
The extravagant silhouette, with its upright grille, 'endless' bonnet and rearward cabin, was influenced by the Bentley Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman coupé from 1930. Known as the 'Blue Train', the car was named for a race former Bentley chairman and racing driver Woolf Barnato had with a train across France, from Cannes to Calais. He arrived in London before the train had reached its destination.
According to Bentley, the EXP 15 concept embodies the five design principles that will shape the brand's future cars: 'Upright Elegance', 'Iconic Grille', 'Endless Bonnet Line', 'Resting Beast' and 'Prestigious Shield'. Without an engine to keep cool, electric cars obviously don't need a massive grille – but grilles have always been a key part of the brand's design language, giving its cars such enormous presence. The new interpretation for the EXP 15 is a shuttered, backlit panel, with a complex geometric pattern and central spine that's also illuminated.
The iconic Bentley Wings and Flying B mascot that sit on the nose of the car have also been reimagined, with a sharper, more contemporary look for the EXP 15, and the road-going EV to come. This is only the fifth time the Bentley emblem has been altered in its 106-year history, and is by far the most significant transformation, serving as a clear signal of the start of a new era.
Meanwhile, the notion of the 'Resting Beast' refers to the stance of the car and achieving the perfect proportions of the body. Domen Rucigaj, head of exterior design, explained: 'All the finest Bentleys feature rear haunches that bulge outward from the body of the car above the rear wheels, expressing their 'muscle' and potent energy, just like the rounded shape of the bent upper legs of a big cat.
'But a Bentley's overall stance needs to be relaxed and horizontal, not aggressively leaning forward, nor leaning back and looking 'lazy'. I am also focused on perfect Bentley proportions which are divided, from top to bottom, into one-third for the cabin and two-thirds for the body.' Some other noteworthy details include the incredibly thin light strips that make up the headlights, which are also used to frame the grille, while behind the front wheelarches are vents to channel airflow along the sides. Active twin roof spoilers assist with aerodynamics, too, as does an active rear diffuser. The liquid metal satin paint colour is called Pallas Gold, with golden white highlights inspired by the nickel parts on the legendary Speed Six.
The enormous bonnet is not to overcompensate for the lack of an engine. This is a grand tourer, after all, so underneath is space for occupants' luggage, while the large panel at the rear with the Bentley logo and lettering – the afore-mentioned 'Prestigious Shield' – is actually part of the tailgate and once lowered, offers seating for two.
The 1930 Gurney Nutting coupé also inspired the EXP 15's interior layout, which only includes three seats. However, it differs from the McLaren F1; the driver's seat is in the 'conventional' place and there's a passenger seat behind it. However the passenger-side chair has nothing in front of it, giving the lucky occupant a massive amount of legroom.
It can be moved up front in 'co-pilot' mode, if they want to chat with the driver or provide directions, and can also be reclined backwards in 'relax' mode. The vast space in front of that seat has footrests, of course, but these can be folded down to create a shallow space for more luggage or even to install a bed for your beloved pet – although the dog in the images provided by Bentley doesn't exactly seem thrilled by their branded, impeccably-finished quarters. Obviously this passenger seat is the best one in the house, especially as that side also features twin coach doors. When opened, part of the panoramic roof lifts upwards, plus the seat swivels 45 degrees, to make entry and exiting of the car as smooth as possible.
'The seat can rotate and you step out, totally unflustered, not trying to clamber out like you see with some supercars,' Darren Day, head of interior design, said. 'You just get out with dignity and the Instagram shot is perfect. If you look at the car we built for Her Majesty the Queen, it was always designed around the aperture of the door and 'the art of arrival'. It was really important for us to create that feeling here, too.'
Bentley's 'Wing Gesture' dashboard is one of several long-held interior design principles the brand is carrying forward. Another is 'Bold Gravitas', the notion of celebrating the natural materials like wood, metal or even stone that have traditionally featured in Bentley cars by using them across large areas, so occupants can really see and feel them.
Among the other materials onboard is silk woven in one of the UK's oldest mills by Suffolk company Gainsborough, founded in 1903, which sits alongside 3D-printed titanium and a new woven metal mesh called 'Acrylic Couture' that creates 3D graphics in the dashboard when illuminated.
Clearly Bentley will not be falling into the same trap as those brands that have abandoned physical buttons in favour of haptic, touch-sensitive panels and are now making U-turns, like Ferrari. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
Instead, it will continue to blend physical and digital interfaces in what it calls 'Magical Fusion'. Hence the knurled dials and start button on the centre console, while behind the glass dashboard is the 'Mechanical Marvel' – a clock-like device that shows the direction of travel, state of charge and other information, while also serving as a visual centrepiece for the cabin.
Finally, instead of a rotating dashboard like you'll find in the latest Flying Spur or Continental GT, the section of the EXP 15's dashboard responsible for the infotainment can simply be switched off to reveal the veneered wood surface beneath.
Robin Page, Bentley's design director, said: 'The beauty of a concept car is not just to position our new design language, but to test where the market's going. It's clear that SUVs are a growing segment and we understand the GT market – through four generations of the Continental GT – but the trickiest segment is the sedan, because it's changing.
'Some customers want a classic 'three-box' sedan shape, others a 'one-box' design, and others again something more elevated. So this was a chance for us to talk to people and get a feeling.'

Ferrari Exec Delivers Brutal Blow To Manual Lovers

Don't get excited about a manual Purosangue or 296 While Porsche still has a few manual sports cars, it's been over a decade since Ferrari abandoned the stick shift with the California. While many enthusiasts get all giddy at the idea of a manual Ferrari, the truth of the matter is that the people who buy these cars mostly chose the automatic, hence the Italian marque's decision to discontinue this gearbox option. 0:03 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More Although Ferrari recently hinted at a comeback for manual models, that now seems to be in doubt once more. At the reveal of the stunning new Amalfi, a Ferrari exec had a cheeky response when asked about the possible return of a manual. Go Used Or Go Home 'You missed! The manual gearbox, we already have it, in many of our classic cars,' said Enrico Galliera, Ferrari's chief marketing and commercial officer when speaking to Evo. 'You can go and drive our fantastic manual gearboxes on our fantastic events for our classic cars. Whoever wants to have this kind of classic experience, they can buy and restore our fantastic classics and come to our events.' Although we weren't there to cast judgment on Galliera's tone when answering the question, this response had more than a hint of exasperation to it (we counted at least four 'fantastics' in there) and possibly stems from him being asked about manual Ferraris one too many times. 'We offer Corsa Pilotti on classic cars because many people don't know how to use the manual cars,' continued Galliera. 'It's an important experience that we can offer on our classic cars for the time being.' Then again, this isn't a brand that chases volumes, and looking beyond pure vehicle sales at Ferrari as a business, things are going well. Operating profit over the same period was up by 23%, net revenues grew by 13%, and net profit was up by 17%. So, it's not as if the absence of a manual is affecting its bottom line. Looking back at the California, thousands were sold with the dual-clutch automatic, and a mere three examples had a manual. That's a lot of investment for a feature that so few buyers want. Furthermore, it's not as if rivals are bombarding the market with manual options. Lamborghini, for example, last sold a manual in 2013 on the Gallardo. Nostalgia is a powerful tool, though, and we're sure Ferrari would have no trouble selling a limited-run, bespoke manual model that recalls the past. What we don't see is the manual returning as an option on regular production models like the 296 or Purosangue. As Galliera made clear, your best bet is to indulge in a classic Prancing Horse if you want to shift gears yourself. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

Bentley EXP 15 concept previews new design direction

By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. Heritage-Inspired Concept Previews Bentley's Electric Future Bentley's latest concept car is a hulking tribute to the automaker's past that provides hints about the future. Measuring over 16 feet long, the EXP 15 is inspired by the 1930 Bentley Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman coupe—better known as the 'Blue Train'—but provides the first clues of the design language and tech features of Bentley's first EV, an SUV smaller than the Bentayga due to be revealed in 2026. 0:01 / 0:09 When will Toyota build an EV with its simulated manual transmission? Watch More In a press release, Bentley emphasized that the EXP 15 is not a direct preview of that SUV (or any other production vehicle, as it's a static model that isn't drivable). But 'subtle design cues' from that model have been incorporated into the EXP 15's exterior, and the interior's tech features could be incorporated into future Bentley models as well. New Life For An Old Shape The EXP 15's namesake received its Blue Train nickname when Bentley chairman Woolf Barnato used it to race a train of that name from Cannes in the south of France to Calais in the north. Barnato made it across the English Channel to London before the train reached Calais, creating a foundational piece of Bentley lore. Ninety-five years later, the distinctive shape of the Bentley Blue Train's coachbuilt Gurney Nutting bodywork is making a comeback. Like the Blue Train, the EXP 15 isn't an SUV. But its tall body sides and upright front end work well in the current era, where SUVs continue push aside traditional cars. They combine with an elongated hood and steeply-raked back window—also prominent features of the Blue Train—to create a look intended to test customer tastes. 'It's clear that SUVs are a growing segment and we understand the GT market—through four generations of the Continental GT—but the trickiest segment is the sedan because it's changing.' Bentley design boss Robin Page said in a statement. 'Some customers want a classic 'three-box' sedan shape, others a 'one-box' design, and others again something more elevated. So this was a chance for us to talk to people and get a feeling.' Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. Research and compare vehicles, too. Design Details Hint At New Direction Whether a vehicle with this shape will ever roll off the production line at Bentley's United Kingdom factory is unclear, but the automaker claims some of the concept's details will. The exterior surfacing, meant to give the EXP 15 a muscular appearance, will be applied to future models, according to Bentley. The concept's exterior lighting, including headlights formed from four thin strips and LEDs arranged to suggest Bentley's current diamond-patterned grilles, hint at what's possible as well. The need to maximize range means EVs can't afford to ignore aerodynamics, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the EXP 15's front-fender vents and pair of deployable rear spoilers on a production car. The protruding taillights also help channel air around the car, Bentley claims. Less likely to reach production is the EXP 15's three-door, three-seat layout. Like an upscale Hyundai Veloster, the concept has one driver's side door and two passenger's side doors. In this case, though they're coach doors that open along with a section of the roof to make ingress and egress easier. A seat that swivels 45 degrees aids in that as well. That seat can also switch from fully upright 'Co-Pilot' mode, to slid-back 'Standard' mode, to reclined 'Relax' mode. Next-Generation Materials And Tech The EXP 15 also features an update of Bentley's current rotating central touchscreen, which can be hidden away when not in use, that now encompasses the entire dashboard. The dash can now switch from a pillar-to-pillar screen to a wood veneer without a pixel in sight. It also incorporates a physical dial that designer call the 'Mechanical Marvel,' which can be reconfigured to show the state of charge, direction of travel, and other information. High-end materials are expected in a Bentley, and the EXP 15 features a mix of old (silk jacquard textile woven at one of the U.K.'s oldest mills) and new (3D-printed titanium trim that reduces weight and waste compared to conventional processes). The concept's Pallas Gold paint also has an aluminum pigment that allows it to be used on bodywork that covers sensors, which would otherwise be unable to transmit through paint. Onward To An Electric Future Bentley didn't provide much detail on the engineering side of the EXP 15, only saying that it was designed around an all-wheel drive electric powertrain. That will soon become the norm at Bentley which, after roughly a decade of fits and starts, plans to go all-electric by 2035. That shift, heralded by a redesign of Bentley's iconic logo, will start with the aforementioned smaller SUV, but could encompass more stately models closer to the EXP 15 as Bentley builds out the lineup. Formula 1 steering wheel stolen at Silverstone British Grand Prix

A Formula One steering wheel worth more than £2,500 was stolen from a classic car on display at Silverstone, the car's engineer Sheppard said the incident at the Northamptonshire racing circuit left a "sour taste in the mouth".It was snatched at about 14:30 BST on Friday while team members were eating lunch during the British Grand Police released a CCTV image of a man they wanted to speak to following the theft.
