Japan's Next-Gen E10 Shinkansen Series To Debut On Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Route
Japan currently operates the E5 series Shinkansen trains at present while the E10 is the next-generation upgrade. The E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan
In the spirit of strategic partnership between Japan and India, the Japanese government has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.
The ministry of railways made the announcement on Monday, explaining Japan operates the E5 series Shinkansen trains at present while the E10 is the next-generation upgrade. The E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan, it said.
'The entire 508-km corridor is being developed with Japanese Shinkansen technology. It will set new benchmarks for speed, safety, and reliability. This reflects the deep strategic and technological cooperation between India and Japan," an official statement said.
CONSTRUCTION AT RAPID PACE
Civil works for the bullet train project are progressing at a rapid pace across the alignment. A total of 310 km of the viaduct is already constructed. Track laying, overhead electrical wiring as well as construction of stations and bridges are on at a rapid pace.
In parallel, the progress on procurement of systems for operations and control is also ongoing. In addition, 15 river bridges have been completed and four are in the advanced stages of construction.
WORK IN MAHARASHTRA PICKS UP
The construction work in Maharashtra has picked up. Earlier this month, the bullet train project achieved a major milestone of opening the first section of the 21-km undersea tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Thane.
The ministry termed the station at BKC an engineering marvel. It will be located 32.5 m below the ground and the foundation is designed to support the construction of a 95-metre high building above ground.
Earlier this year, the ministry said the timeline for completion of the bullet train project can be 'reasonably ascertained" after all associated civil works related to structures, track, electrical, signalling and telecommunication, and supply of trainsets are done.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, for the operation of the bullet train, is passing through Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
The length of the project is 508 km with 12 stations planned at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.
The physical work for the project started in September 2017 with the initial deadline as December 2023. But the project was delayed, and it is now expected that one of the sections can be made operational by 2026 in Gujarat, ahead of the assembly elections in the state.

Japan PM Shigeru Ishiba signals he'll stay amid resignation calls
Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba signalled he intends to stay in office despite a growing number of calls within the ruling party for him to step down after an election setback last week. "I intend to devote myself to the people and the future of the country," Ishiba said in an interview with national broadcaster NHK. He added he must take responsibility for implementing the recently announced US-Japan trade deal , and that the real work on it starts now. He is set to speak at a meeting of Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers on Monday. Party members have been calling on someone to take responsibility for the July 20 elections that saw the LDP lose its majority in Japan's upper house elections. It marks the first time since 1955 that a leader from the storied Japanese party will govern the country without a majority in at least one of the legislative bodies. India cautious as US deals with Japan, others unravel
India is treading cautiously in its trade talks with the US, persons familiar with the issue said, citing a setback in America's recent deal with Japan, and continuing challenges in closing two other deals announced by President Donald Trump - with Indonesia and Vietnam. Japan has disputed the terms of its trade deal with the US, with Tokyo's interpretation diverging from that of the Trump administration. Japanese officials maintain there is no written agreement yet, while US officials claim Tokyo has committed investments in the US, from which local taxpayers would get nine-tenths of the profits. This contradicts Trump's claim that Japan would bear the entire investment burden on its own, with the US receiving 90% of the profits. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo On Saturday, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement with the US and Oman were at an advanced stage. He also said a team of negotiators from the US will visit India in the second half of August to take the talks ahead. India would not be bound by timelines when it came to trade negotiations, the minister said, signalling that the government won't rush into a deal at the cost of national interest. Live Events Trump unilaterally announced a trade deal with Indonesia following a conversation with President Prabowo Subianto, but the deal is yet to be signed. On July 22, Indonesia's chief negotiator and coordinating minister for economic affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, issued a joint statement with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, outlining the framework for the deal and clarifying import tax rates. The statement included additional information on non-tariff measures and commercial agreements, and the two sides agreed to continue negotiations to finalise the pact. "Yet, the risk of a policy setback remains high if the political agreement is not turned into a legal instrument," according to a commentary by Iis Gindarsah, a visiting senior fellow specialising on Indonesia at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore. Meanwhile, Vietnam is yet to officially confirm the tariff rates announced by Trump as part of a bilateral deal, it is learnt. Hanoi fears that its exports to the US could decline by a third if higher tariffs announced by Trump take effect. Vietnam's total exports to the US amounted to $120 billion last year, according to official data. "Tariffs of 20% to 40% would slash export revenue by up to $37 billion, and hit the majority of Vietnam's key industries, including electronics, machinery, garments, footwear and furniture," a recent Bloomberg report said.

Russia starts direct commercial flights between Moscow, Pyongyang
Moscow, Jul 27 (AP) Russia on Sunday opened a regular air link between Moscow and Pyogyang, a move reflecting increasingly close ties between the two countries. The first flight operated by Russian carrier Nordwind took off from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport carrying over 400 passengers. Russia's Transport Ministry said there will be one flight a month to meet demand. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who visited North Korea's new Wonsan-Kalma beach resort earlier this month to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, promised to encourage Russian tourists to visit the complex. The resort, which can accommodate nearly 20,000 people, is at the centre of Kim's push to boost tourism to improve his country's troubled economy. North Korea has been slowly easing the curbs imposed during the pandemic and reopening its borders in phases. But the country hasn't said if it would fully resume international tourism. Regular flights between Russia's eastern port city of Vladivostok and Pyongyang reopened in 2023 following a break caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Russia and North Korea have sharply expanded military and other ties in recent years, with Pyongyang supplying weapons and troops to back Russia's military action in Ukraine.
