KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has proposed three initiatives, including the Asean Franchise Accelerator Programme, to elevate Malaysia's franchise ecosystem.
He said the programme could serve as a flagship initiative to groom local franchise brands through expert mentorship, access to funding and fast-tracked regional market entry.
The second initiative, he said, is the Asean University Franchise Business Challenge Programme, which gathers cutting-edge franchise concepts from university students across Asean, offering the best ideas to be adopted, nurtured and scaled by leading franchise players.
'The third will be celebrating World Franchise Day, a global event observed by all World Franchise Council (WFC) members every second week of June, honouring the impact and unity of the global franchise community through awareness programmes or conferences in Malaysia,' Ahmad Zahid said at the opening of the Asean Franchise Convention Declaration and the Franchise International Malaysia (FIM) Exhibition 2025.
He added that Malaysia's franchise sector currently contributes over RM36bil to the gross domestic product (GDP) and provides more than 68,000 jobs, proving its significant potential.
He said the joint declaration signed by franchise associations from six Asean countries marks a historic commitment to regional collaboration in franchise development.
The declaration, read out by Asean Franchise Convention (AFC) director Deric Yeo, contained a commitment to ensuring Asean franchise sustainability, digitalisation and collaboration.
The event was also attended by Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick and his deputy, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.
Ahmad Zahid said the ministry would also formulate a comprehensive Rural Youth Development Plan aimed at producing a digitally literate, knowledgeable and skilled young rural generation.
The plan would not only create jobs through the establishment of Rural Gig Hubs, but also nurture young leadership by appointing Rural Youth Ambassadors to serve as the voice and representative of the new rural generation.
Ahmad Zahid also urged the Community Development Department (Kemas) to strengthen engagement sessions with parents and educators to evaluate the impact of the Kemas Pre-Tahfiz Programme, which has been running for a year.

Perak One Of Malaysia's Top Durian-Producing States In 2024

LARUT, July 20 (Bernama) -- Perak emerged as one of the leading durian-producing states in Malaysia, with a production volume of 59,217.3 tonnes worth RM462.28 million in 2024. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the achievement thus contributed to the country's agri-food economy and proved Perak's capability in the durian export market. Saarani said Malaysia exported durians produced in Perak to over 41 countries between 2017 and 2023, with 73 per cent of the export value concentrated in China. "In 2022, Malaysia's durian export value reached RM1.14 billion, including RM887 million to China, yet demand for varieties such as the Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, IOI and premium durian kampung from Perak continues to rise. "In addition, Topone Solution Sdn Bhd (TSSB) successfully exported 30 containers of durians worth RM20 million in 2024, including five containers of durian kampung worth RM1 million, as well as 100 tonnes of durian kampung paste worth RM5.25 million,' he said. Saarani said this when officiating the closing ceremony of the 2025 Perak state-level Durian Fest at Dataran Selama, near here, today. He said Malaysia began exporting fresh durians to China on Aug 24, 2024, involving 413.61 tonnes (RM24.84 million), following the phytosanitary agreement between the two countries after official approval was obtained in June last year. "Since then, Malaysian durians have penetrated 16 key provinces in China and received an overwhelming response as a premium exotic product, with the durian kampung from Perak also gaining global recognition. "Malaysia's durian export value is expected to reach RM1.8 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of between 20 and 25 per cent, driven by advancements in logistics, frozen supply chain technology and downstream product innovation,' he said.

MACC probes two more firms in data centre graft scandal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has uncovered two additional companies suspected of securing data centre construction projects through bribery. The case involves a detained project manager from a prominent construction firm who allegedly demanded kickbacks in exchange for tender advantages. A source revealed that several company directors have been identified and will be called in for questioning. 'The main suspect admitted to requesting around three per cent of the project value from companies seeking contracts,' the source said. The bribes were facilitated by leaking tender details and ensuring priority for paying firms. Payments were made in stages, aligned with project milestones. 'Several million ringgit remain unpaid as per the agreement,' the source added. Earlier reports disclosed that the project manager attempted to destroy nearly RM1 million in cash during an MACC raid under Op Ways. Officers discovered burning RM100 notes at his Petaling Jaya residence, alongside RM7.5 million in cash hidden in pillow boxes, luxury watches, and jewellery. On Friday, MACC arrested a contract manager, his wife, and two others in the Klang Valley over a Johor-based data centre project worth RM180 million. - Bernama
