Education Ministry Seeks Explanation From JNU VC For Skipping Key Conference Without Approval
The Ministry of Education has sought a written explanation from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit over her absence from a key conference of Central University heads, sources told PTI.
Officials noted that Pandit did not attend the Vice-Chancellors' conference without obtaining prior approval from the Ministry. Her absence was flagged as a serious matter.
There has been no official response from the JNU Vice-Chancellor on the issue so far.
'Her absence was viewed seriously. In such circumstances, Vice-Chancellors are required to take prior approval. There was a conference at JNU coinciding with the Vice-Chancellors' conference. But it should have been kept in mind that the invite for this conference was extended much in advance," a source said.
While the Ministry's conference was scheduled for July 10–11 in Kevadia, Gujarat, JNU was hosting its own three-day conference on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) from July 10 to 12, which former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated.
Key discussions at the event focused on assessing how Central Universities are aligning with the NEP's next-phase objectives, fostering dialogue on institutional innovations and challenges, and preparing universities for upcoming policy milestones, regulatory shifts, and the evolving global academic landscape leading up to 2047.

Bengaluru, Jul 29 (PTI) Karnataka Science and Technology Minister N S Boseraju on Tuesday said the state is set to witness a historic moment in India's scientific journey as the state government is all set to host Nobel laureates Duncan Haldane and David Gross for an exclusive dialogue on July 30. The interaction precedes the nation's first-ever Quantum India Bengaluru Summit, scheduled on July 31 and August 1, officials said. 'Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, our government is laying the groundwork to position Karnataka as India's Quantum Capital. This dialogue with Nobel Laureates marks the beginning of a long-term roadmap to integrate quantum innovation into Karnataka's development blueprint," the Minister said in a statement. From IT and aerospace to cutting-edge quantum frontiers, the state aims to strengthen its position on the global innovation map, he added. According to him, the dialogue will facilitate high-level discussions between the Nobel Laureates and Karnataka's top officials, including the Principal Secretaries of Industries, IT and BT, and Higher Education. The exchange is expected to pave the way for advancing quantum research, infrastructure, and collaborations with global experts. 'The presence of Nobel Laureates at the Quantum India Bengaluru Summit underscores the international significance of the event, which will bring together global and national leaders in quantum science, placing Karnataka at the epicenter of India's quantum revolution," he added. However, Nadda apologised to Kharge after uproar by opposition MPs and withdrew his remark. 'He (RS LoP Mallikarjun Kharge) is a very senior leader but the way in which he had commented on the PM…I can understand his pain. He (PM Modi) has been there since 11 years now. He happens to be the most popular leader of the world… But you have so much in love with your party that you are in so much pain having losing your mental balance use those words," the Leader of House in Rajya Sabha said. After Nadda's remark, Kharge said, 'There are a few leaders in this House I have immense respect for. Nadda ji is one of them. Rajnath ji and he are ministers who speak without losing their balance. He is telling me today. This is a matter of shame. He should apologise, I am not going to leave this alone." view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 16:33 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ED filed closure reports in 49 PMLA cases over last 10 years: Govt
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) over the last 10-and-a- half years, has filed closure reports in 49 cases before special courts meant to try anti-money laundering crimes, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. The agency secured eight conviction orders involving 15 people from the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) courts between 2015 to June 2025, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written statement furnished in Rajya Sabha. He was asked about the details of all cases lodged by the ED since 2015 where charge sheets have not yet been filed in courts, trial of the accused has not started and prosecution has been closed by the federal probe agency. 'During the period from 01.01.2015 to 30.06.2025, the Directorate of Enforcement has taken up 5,892 cases for investigation under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002," the minister said. In these cases, 1,398 prosecution complaints including 353 supplementary charge sheets have been filed before the respective special courts under PMLA, he said. Out of these, so far, the special courts have framed charges in 300 prosecution complaints including 66 supplementary charge sheets, Chaudhary said. 'As on 30.06.2025, the PMLA special courts have convicted 15 persons in 08 conviction orders in these cases," he stated. According to the scheme of PMLA, money laundering cases are only registered after taking cognisance of a predicate offence or primary case booked under various sections of the IPC or BNS and other laws. The courts have held that if the primary case falls before a court of law, the PMLA case will automatically go away.
