Saudi energy minister: oil and gas will remain indispensable despite expansion of renewable energy

Saudi Gazette report
VIENNA — Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said that oil and gas will remain indispensable despite expansion of renewable energy. "While renewable, nuclear power, and hydrogen energy sources are expanding, oil and gas will remain indispensable, especially in hard to abate sectors like heavy industry, transport, and in supporting economies of developing countries," he said while addressing the opening session of the 9th OPEC International Seminar in Vienna on Wednesday.
Under the theme "Charting pathways together: The future of global energy", the two-day event features exhibitions, ministerial sessions, and high-level roundtables, with a wide range of industry leaders are participating.
Prince Abdulaziz warned against compromising economic growth or affordability in the name of energy transition, especially when the global population is expected to approach 10 billion by 2050, pushing energy demand up by nearly 50 percent. He cautioned that energy transition will come at the expense of economic growth and the cost of living.
The minister expressed his happiness at the increasing number of countries adopting a more realistic approach to this transition. He also emphasized that this transition does not represent a threat to oil producers, but rather represents a path for technological innovation.
Prince Abdulaziz emphasized that Saudi Arabia is following a consistent and coherent approach that balances vision and implementation. "Sustainability must be understood more comprehensively to include economic and commercial dimensions, not just environmental ones," he said.
The minister emphasized the importance of technology in achieving the required balance, particularly carbon capture and storage technologies, as they will play a fundamental role in reducing emissions without harming economic competitiveness.
Prince Abdulaziz said this phase would represent a historic opportunity to enhance innovation, attract investment, and achieve economic development. He also emphasized Saudi Arabia's commitment to being a role model for a balanced energy transition that ensures security of supply and promotes sustainable development.

Saudi Road Code Now Supports Safe Autonomous Vehicles Integration

Saudi Arabia's Roads General Authority has unveiled that the Saudi Road Code is currently featuring advanced infrastructure standards to ensure the safe integration of autonomous vehicles across the Kingdom, according to Saudi Gazette. Now, self-driving vehicles can professionally operate under various conditions as the new update included requirements for road design and construction. Crucially, the authority has developed pavement layers to handle the repetitive routing patterns of autonomous vehicles and installed real-time communication systems along roadways to transmit critical data to vehicles. In order to promote traffic flow, parking areas now features automated guidance and self-parking capabilities. It will enable these entities to access the necessary information to plan, design, implement, operate, and maintain roads of all types across the Kingdom. The authority has previously introduced Saudi Road Code as a voluntary framework. However, it became mandatory on public sector entities at the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, the private sector is set to officially adopt the code mid-2025. Saudi Arabia confirms full compliance with voluntary OPEC+ target

The Saudi Ministry of Energy reaffirmed Friday that it remained 'fully compliant' with its voluntary OPEC+ target. 'Marketed crude supply in June stood at 9.352 million barrels per day, in full alignment with the agreed quota,' a statement from the ministry said. 'Amid heightened geopolitical tensions, the Kingdom acted prudently, proactively, and preemptively, in line with its role as a reliable, dependable, and transparent energy supplier, to strengthen supply resilience and uphold global energy security,' the statement added. The ministry stated that production briefly exceeded supply, but emphasized that these additional volumes were not marketed domestically or internationally. Rather, the additional supply was redirected as a contingency measure to build domestic inventories, optimize east-west flows, and reposition barrels to offshore storage hubs under long-term delivery strategies, according to the statement. 'The Kingdom reports both production and supply data with full transparency to the OPEC Secretariat on a monthly basis. 'Furthermore, all eight OPEC-designated Secondary Sources were formally briefed at the beginning of this week regarding the June figures,' the ministry added.
