Urban explorers find beauty in China's abandoned buildings amid property crisis

Urban explorers find beauty in China's abandoned buildings amid property crisis

Malay Mail2 days ago
SHANGHAI, July 6 — Xu Pengcheng looks over his shoulder and, after confirming the coast is clear, helps his crew of urban adventurers climb through the broken window of an abandoned building.
Long popular in the West, urban exploration, or 'urbex' for short, sees city-dwelling thrill-seekers explore dilapidated, closed-off buildings and areas—often skirting the law in the process.
And it is growing in popularity in China, where a years-long property sector crisis has left many cities dotted with empty buildings.
Xu, a 29-year-old tech worker from the eastern city of Qingdao, has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers for his photos of rundown schools and vacant cinemas.
'When people see these images, they find them incredibly fresh and fascinating,' he told AFP.
'The realisation that so many abandoned buildings exist—and that they can photograph so beautifully—naturally captures attention.'
AFP joined Xu and his comrades at a deserted hotel in the outskirts of Shanghai for a unique photoshoot.
From the outside, the hotel looked like a prefabricated medieval castle.
Once inside, it was clear the property had been abandoned for years.
Searching through the rooms for good spots for striking photos, Xu and his friends came across remnants of the hotel's past—a mahjong table, laundry sheets and piles of dinner plates.
Props from past photoshoots were scattered on the floor and on one ballroom wall, 'Long Live Chairman Mao' was written in spray paint.
China's recent property market downturn has left many abandoned large-scale projects ready ground for urban explorers.
'I don't think you would find sites like this in Europe,' long-time explorer Brin Connal told AFP as he walked around an empty, abandoned building.
'In China, there's a lot of these places which are unfinished.'
Really special
One such unfinished megaproject in Shanghai, the Pentagon Mall, has become such a hotspot that explorers leave messages for each other on the walls of its top floor.
'I think this is something really special about Chinese urban exploration,' said Sean, a Shanghai resident who did not want to give his real name.
'There's a very strong sense of community and it's very, very welcoming.'
Situated in Shanghai's Pudong district, the project came close to completion in 2009 but investment fell through.
The giant concrete building now sits mostly in disrepair—broken tiles litter the ground and a large faded map of the uncompleted mall is barely visible under a thick layer of dust.
Some rooms still have signs of life, with mattresses from squatters, discarded takeout and cigarette boxes and even laundry hanging outside.
'In places like Shanghai, people always find a way to make use of these buildings, even if they're not completely built and completely usable,' said Sean's exploration partner Nov, who also asked to go by a pseudonym.

Way too dangerous
Chinese social media companies are less enthusiastic.
Looking up abandoned buildings on Instagram-like Xiaohongshu, users are met with a message warning 'there are risks in this area, please pay attention to safety and comply with local policies and regulations'.
Connal, originally from Britain, told AFP he understood the restrictions.
'Some of them are way too dangerous, and some of these abandoned locations were getting overwhelmed with people,' he said.
The hobby also takes place in a legal grey area.
Many urban explorers go by a simple mantra—taking nothing from the places they visit and leaving nothing behind.
But the act of trespassing can come with fines in China, just as it does in the West.
Xu also acknowledged the risks that come with urban exploration—from angry security guards to errant circuitry.
'Firstly, you might face the risk of trespassing illegally. Secondly, private properties may have security guards or be completely sealed off,' he told AFP.
'These locations often involve hazards like no electricity or lighting, structural damage, and injuries from construction materials like exposed nails.'
But model Mao Yi said the hobby offered a respite from the drudgery of big city living.
'Living in these sprawling metropolises of steel and concrete, we've grown familiar with the routines of daily life,' she told AFP. — AFP

China-based chain Nong Geng Ji expands its footprint in the Klang Valley

Nong Geng Ji's fifth outlet in the Klang Valley, located in Sunway Pyramid, is the brand's first Oriental aesthetic concept restaurant in Malaysia. Photos: NONG GENG JI When China-based restaurant chain Nong Geng Ji opened last year in Kuala Lumpur's behemoth TRX, response was frenetic and overwhelming. Long, snaking queues were the norm and to this day, the eatery continues to be swamped with diners clamouring for its particular brand of Hunan cuisine. Founded by famed chef Feng Guo Hua, the brand has over 100 stores in China alone and a growing international presence. Since the first Malaysian outpost in TRX, the brand has expanded its local presence to cater to burgeoning demand and recently unveiled its fifth outlet at Sunway Pyramid. The outlet is the brand's first's 'Oriental aesthetic' concept in Malaysia and pays homage to traditional Chinese elegance. Bouncy slices of fish co-exist alongside copious amounts of chill in what proves to be a fiery gastronomic rollercoaster ride. While most Nong Geng Ji outlets retain a signature green theme, the Sunway Pyramid newbie is bathed in deep blue hues, creating an atmosphere of calm and Zen. The food continues to be the beating heart of the restaurant and in this regard, there is plenty to whet the appetite. Hunan cuisine is one of the eight great Chinese cuisines and is renowned for its hot, spicy flavours and richly aromatic food. Nong Geng Ji honours the food of its homeland with a panoply of dishes designed to tantalise. From what's on offer, opt for the eatery's signature Stir-Fried Glass Fish Fillet with Chili (RM65). Here, bouncy, pliant slices of fish co-mingle amiably with chilli in what proves to be a riotously feisty, fiery combination. Then there is the Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli (RM72), one of the restaurant's most popular offerings that sees 600,000 plates sold annually. Here, Hunan green chilli, baby abalone and tender slices of pork make for a triumphant trinity that juxtaposes heat and fire against the satisfying malleable texture of the meat and the lightly aquatic qualities of the abalone. The stir-fried pork with abalone and chilli is hot and packed with flavour. The Sauerkraut Fish with Soup (RM96) meanwhile is a tangy, acerbic winner filled with fat, voluptuous slices of fish fillets swimming in a sauerkraut-laced broth that will take you down an astringent, yet hugely rewarding journey through pickled pleasures. Another spicy fiend is the Stir-Fried Beef with Tea Oil (RM75) which features beef stir-fried over high heat using pure Hunan tea-oil, which is also known as the 'olive oil of the East'. As a result of the oil infusion, the beef is slick yet supple and retains a succulence and smokiness in its core infrastructure. If you're after a noodle-based dish, indulge in the Big Shrimp with Vermicelli with Garlic (RM52), a meal that features glossy, slurp-worthy noodles and large shrimp with garlic speckled throughout this configuration. Toss everything together and savour the motley assortment of flavours and textures that glide through your palate. It's one of the few dishes on the menu that stays clear of combustive spice levels, so if you're looking for a mild yet flavourful dish, this will do nicely. The pan-seared green chilli with century egg might seem like an odd duck, but if you're willing to brave unknown territory, you'll discover an addictive new treat. The Pan-Seared Green Chillies with Century Egg (RM32) is a condiment served at the restaurant that may seem odd, but muddle the chillies and egg together and you'll find a yummy, gummy concoction that melds incredibly well with rice. Finish your meal with the Deep-Fried Glutinous Rice Fritters (RM12) which are dense, chewy, fried logs of dough sprinkled with sweet undertones that represent the best sort of culmination to a meal here. The deep-fried glutinous rice fritters makes for the perfect way to end a meal. Ultimately, a meal at Nong Geng Ji promises to introduce diners to the wonders of Hunan cuisine with a breathtaking array of addictive dishes designed to incite repeat visits. At the Sunway Pyramid outlet, you can enjoy all this with the added allure of an Oriental aesthetic ambience to complement the meal. Acropolis to close in the afternoon due to heatwave

The four-day heatwave that began Sunday is the second to grip Greece since late June. 08 Jul 2025 03:37pm Tourists walk in front of the Parthenon Temple as they visit the Acropolis archaeological site in Athens on June 14, 2023. (Photo by Louisa GOULIAMAKI / AFP) ATHENS - Greece's culture ministry on Tuesday ordered a partial closure of the Acropolis, the country's top monument, to protect visitors amid heatwave conditions. The ministry in a statement said the site would be closed from 1:00 to 5:00 pm (1000 to 1400 GMT) "for the safety of workers and visitors, owing to high temperatures." The four-day heatwave that began Sunday is the second to grip Greece since late June. Temperatures in the country are expected to reach 42 Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday, with a maximum of 38 Celsius in Athens. Similar temperatures are expected Wednesday. The 2,500-year-old Acropolis, built on a rock overlooking the capital that offers little shade, draws tens of thousands of visitors daily. Last year it recorded some 4.5 million visitors, an increase of over 15 percent compared to 2023. - AFP More Like This
