825 sports kits distributed to 688 villages in Villupuram over six months: District admin
According to a release, in a significant push to encourage rural sports, the collector, distributed 825 sports equipment kits to 688 village panchayats under the Kalaingar Sports Equipment Distribution Scheme in the last six months. The event was inaugurated by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at a state event held in the Government Law College, Villupuram in November last year.
Each kit included 33 types of sporting items, including footballs, volleyballs, cricket gear, badminton rackets, kabaddi kits, skipping ropes, chess boards, and dumbbells of varying weights. These kits are maintained at the respective village panchayat offices and are made available daily to interested youth and students.
The scheme has received widespread appreciation, particularly from rural youth. Many reflected on the scheme stating they only had the passion to play but lacked the funds for proper equipment. Now, thanks to the government, they play every day with quality gear.
Collector S Sheikh Abdul Rahman said the initiative not only fosters athletic development in rural areas but also instilled discipline, teamwork, and health awareness.

Do not borrow PT periods for your lessons, Udhayanidhi Stalin appeals to teachers
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also holds the Sports portfolio, made an interesting appeal to teachers on Tuesday (July 22, 2025). He urged them not to take over physical training (PT) periods to teach academic subjects, but instead to lend their own class time to promote physical activity. 'My request to teachers on behalf of the students is only one: I urge you not to borrow the PT period to teach your lessons. I am making this request in the presence of the Minister for School Education,' Mr. Udhayanidhi said, garnering a round of applause from students. 'If needed, you can lend your classes for PT.' He felicitated students from State-run and government-aided educational institutions, who secured medals and awards in international, national, and State-level sports events, at a function organised by the School Education Department at Jawaharlal Nehru indoor auditorium in Chennai. Underlining the significance of physical training, the Minister said: 'It is every student's right to get their PT period. They should play during those periods. You should use them for sports practice. Looking at these students who have secured medals here, we can understand that you are allowing them to play during their PT periods.' Emphasising the need for students to pursue sports, he said it was equally important to be relentless and not give up. Citing the example of British athlete Derek Redmond, Mr. Udhayanidhi recalled how the athlete's father helped him reach the finishline even though he did not win following a hamstring muscle cramp. 'Victories are not the only things that remain in history. Sometimes, not giving up would also go down in history, and Derek Edmond is a great example of that,' Mr. Udhayanidhi said. Ministers Ma. Subramanian, P.K. Sekarbabu, and Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi; legislator I. Paranthamen; and senior officials were present.

Top surfers to participate in Asian Surfing Championships at Chennai
Top surfers from the 20 countries in the continent will converge at Mahabalipuram for the Asian Surfing Championships 2025 to be held here from August 3 to 12. The tournament, under the aegis of Asian Surfing Federation (ASF), will see competition in shortboard divisions: Open Men, Open Women, U18 Boys, and U18 Girls. The surfers will also vie for qualification spots for the 2026 Asian Games to be staged in Japan during this event. Udhayanidhi Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and Minister for Youth Welfare & Sports Development, said: "Hosting the ASF Asian Surfing Championships 2025 in Tamil Nadu highlights our commitment to nurturing new sports like surfing, creating world-class opportunities for our athletes, and strengthening." The men's and women's champions of this tournament will also receive direct berths to the SurfCity El Salvador ALAS Global Finals, scheduled for November 1723, 2025. 50% of hockey ground construction completed in Coimbatore
Construction of an international-standard hockey ground in Coimbatore has reached the halfway mark, with several key facilities nearing completion. Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin laid the foundation for the facility on April 27, 2025. It is being developed on a 7.02-acre site at the Corporation Higher Secondary School ground in R.S. Puram at an estimated cost of ₹9.67 crore. International specifications According to the Coimbatore Corporation, the ground is designed to meet international specifications. It will feature International Hockey Federation (FIH)-certified synthetic turf laid over 6,500 square metres, a dressing room spanning 147 square metres, six stadium mast lights, and a six-unit pop-up sprinkler system. A project official said, 'The initial phase of work includes installation of the turf, lighting, fencing, sprinkler system, and supporting infrastructure. The six pop-up sprinkler units have been installed and tested. Milling of the turf area is complete, and bituminous (BT) surfacing is under way, over which the synthetic turf will be laid. Fencing is in progress around the turf area, covering a length of 350 metres.' Two dugouts are also being constructed as part of the initial phase. Each of the six stadium mast light poles will stand 17 metres tall and will be fitted with 20 LED lights of 500 watts each. Construction of the dressing room, toilets, and a water tank is ongoing and is expected to be completed within a month, the official added. Future proposals include a spectator gallery with a seating capacity of 1,700, a conference hall, dining facility for players, a gymnasium, rest rooms, office spaces, and parking facilities for 114 cars and 208 two-wheelers.
