Beware toxic, foot-long worms invading US — here's what to do if you see the ‘demonic flesh-eaters'
Weeks of heavy rain have prompted a plague of massive, toxic hammerhead flatworms to erupt from the ground in North Texas, much to the chagrin of frightened locals.
'It was terrifying, like these are truly the end times, even the worms are demonic,' Keller resident Adam Ingle told NBC5 of the subterranean scourge, which reared its hammerhead in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston regions.
Named for their flat, ball-peen-evoking noggins, these foot-long invertebrates secrete neurotoxins that can irritate human skin upon contact and also poison pets that ingest them.

These invaders also prey on native species such as the earthworms that tend the soil, which can impact the environment.
Since arriving in the US from Southeast Asia in the late 1800s, the worms have spread across the nation, cropping up everywhere from the Pacific Northwest to New York and most recently, North Texas, despite having been in the Lone Star State for decades.
4 'Tear it in half, now you've got two worms,' said Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller while warning of their regenerative capabilities.

While they generally prefer to remain underground out of the sunlight, the heavy torrents brought these wriggling menaces to the surface, as seen in multiple viral TikTok videos of the groundbreaking phenomenon.
'In one of the creepy videos, the worms are wriggling on the surface of the soil like a miniature version of the monsters from 'Tremors' while another shows a lengthy specimen inching its way across an envelope.
A third depicts one of the vacuum-headed critters crawling across a screen.
'Houstonnn we have a problem!!' the poster wrote in the caption. 'You don't want this guy in your garden or near your pets!'
Unfortunately, eliminating this tiny terror is no mean feat — chopping them in half only increases their numbers as they reproduce asexually.
'Don't kill it, don't squish it, don't cut it up, because it makes three or four more worms,' warned Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, per NBC5. 'Tear it in half, now you've got two worms.'
To dispatch hammerhead worms, experts advise bagging the worms and freezing them for up to 48 hours or leaving them in a salt and vinegar solution.
Due to their toxic nature, homeowners should avoid touching them without wearing gloves or other protection, even if they're already dead.

Mom Takes Sons on First Roller Coaster, Camera Captures Carnage That Follows
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. A mom has shared pictures of the moment her twin sons' first trip on a roller coaster took an unexpected turn. When Brittany Joy, along with her husband and kids, headed to Orlando, Florida, for a weeklong staycation to mark multiple family birthdays, there was only one thing on the minds of her two youngest sons, twins Bryson and Coleson: Jurassic World VelociCoaster. One of the many attractions at Universal Islands of Adventure, the pair had picked the ride to be their very first experience of a roller coaster. "They were extremely excited," Joy told Newsweek. "Talked about it for months leading up to the trip, kept talking about how they're not scared, and nothing would be too crazy for them and that they could handle it. They were extremely confident." That confidence, unfortunately, would prove misplaced. Bryson and Coleson are excited as they wait to go on their first roller coaster. Bryson and Coleson are excited as they wait to go on their first roller coaster. TikTok/@ Professor Brendan Walker is an aeronautical engineer who has helped develop some of the most-famous roller coasters in the world. In an interview with BBC Science Focus, Walker explained the "psychological levers" he is trying to pull when designing rides of this kind. "If I put you on a roller coaster and blindfolded you, your body's levels of arousal would pretty precisely track the changes in acceleration forces felt around the ride," Walker said. "Roller coasters are successful because they really grab hold of that element of arousal and, because it's so tightly interlinked with physical sensations that we get from the world, we can almost force an emotional experience by the very shape of the roller coaster." Bryson and Coleson certainly had an "experience" on the VelociCoaster, but it wasn't necessarily an emotional one. In truth, the warning signs were there. "The twins have an older brother who didn't want to ride the roller coaster," Joy said. The mom rode alongside one of the twins, with her husband seated alongside the other. It would prove to be a memorable ride—for the parents at least. In a series of slides posted to TikTok under the handle @ Joy shared a picture of the boys looking excited as they queued for the ride. The video then cuts to the four of them mid-ride. By that point, both twins had passed out, though Joy is oblivious to any issue at this stage. "My husband said the twin who was with him passed out before the ride even started. That's why he was fully turned to look at him," Joy said. "Then the twin who was with me passed out after it started, and that's why I didn't realize yet." Joy soon cottoned on that there was an issue, though, with both parents springing into action. "Shortly after that picture was taken, we spent the duration of the ride trying to hold their heads back the best we could so we barely got to enjoy the ride," Joy said. She added that, once the ride was over, the boys woke up with "zero memory" of what had happened. Some might have been disappointed to have missed out after hyping up the experience for so long. The boys had a different take. "We told them they passed out, and they instantly started laughing about it, talked about it for days, telling everyone the story," Joy said. The twins are seen passed out on the roller coaster with their parents. The twins are seen passed out on the roller coaster with their parents. TikTok/@ The fainting incident proved to be the making of them on the trip, too. "It worked out in our favor because the rest of the trip they continued to go on every single ride with no fear and no more fainting," Joy said. The mom's video, meanwhile, went viral, with several viewers flocking to reveal similar experiences. "I honestly never expected it to go viral the way it did, so I'm still shocked by that," Joy said. "It seems as if a lot of people have fallen victim to the same roller coaster."

Labrador Won't Stop Staring at Sibling Having Laser, Vet Has a Plan
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Internet users can't cope with a Labrador wearing "doggles" because he couldn't be trusted not to stare directly at the laser. Simba, an 11-year-old Labrador, is undergoing physiotherapy at Modern Vet in Dubai to treat his severe arthritis. Megan Taylor, the veterinary physiotherapist on his case , told Newsweek that laser therapy helps "reduce pain and inflammation" by using light energy. This in turn can boost the blood flow, speed up healing, and helps ease discomfort in stiff joints. "It's a quick and pain free procedure, most dogs will feel relaxed during it and may fall asleep," Taylor, 31, said. Thankfully for Simba, he is often joined by his canine sibling, Daboa, who likes to attend the appointments and offer "moral support." Simba receiving laser treatment, and Daboa wearing protective goggles. @tayloredvetphysio / TikTok There's just one slight problem with that, because Daboa cannot be trusted not to stare directly at the harmful laser. It's all just so fun and exciting to Daboa, also a Labrador, so Taylor had to come up with a solution to protect his eyes. While Simba was lying on the floor receiving the laser treatment, Dabao was given a pair of so-called "doggles" to wear. Taylor continued: "The laser uses a light that can be damaging to your eyes, so myself and his owner are also wearing goggles. The owners knew Dabao would not sit still and would be looking at the light, so we put goggles on him too. "The owners and I laughed so much when we saw Daboa sitting there wagging his tail, happily, in his glasses. Some dogs don't like the glasses or tolerate them well, but he wasn't fazed at all." Indeed, Taylor explained that it's not uncommon for owners to take their other pets to appointments in order to provide company and support. Daboa certainly did a great job at that. Taylor couldn't resist capturing a clip of Daboa looking so excited about his new accessory. The video of him wearing his protective eyewear was shared on TikTok (@tayloredvetphysio) and it's gone viral with more than 1.3 million views and over 131,000 likes at the time of writing. Needless to say, internet users can't get enough of Daboa wearing his goggles with pride. In just a matter of days, the viral video has generated over 140 comments on TikTok as social media users lauded Daboa's brotherly support. One comment reads: "Under those goggles I know his eyes are open and trying to find that light." Another person replied: "He said I don't know what's going on but I'm having fun." Another TikTok user joked: "Dog: 'Dad, do we get to keep the goggles?'" While one commenter wrote: "I just love everything about this and it gave me a big smile." Taylor has loved the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the video, and she's laughed so much at the hilarious comments. But most importantly, she's thankful to be able to help Simba live a joyful and fulfilling life. "Simba is able to walk again and much more comfortable with the physiotherapy sessions and Daboa is as goofy and happy as ever," Taylor told Newsweek. Coldplay accidentally exposes tech CEO's alleged affair on concert Jumbotron
A 'Kiss Cam' moment gone wrong has got the internet swirling with rumors of infidelity involving two tech executives, and Coldplay is responsible. Andy Byron, CEO of data orchestration platform Astronomer, and the company's chief human resources officer, Kristin Cabot, were shown on the Jumbotron canoodling at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. during the English rock band's concert on Wednesday, July 16. Both of them are reportedly married to other people. A clip from the concert, shared to TikTok by @instaagrace, catches Byron embracing Cabot until they notice the camera spotlighting them. The two then immediately recoil, with Byron ducking down out of frame while Cabot covers her face and turns the other direction. 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy,' Coldplay frontman Chris Martin quipped onstage during the awkward moment. The video has received more than 3 million likes since it was posted on Wednesday, July 16, and has been widely reshared across other social media platforms. Byron has served as CEO of New York-based Astronomer, which has offices in San Jose and San Francisco, since 2023. He has two children with his wife, educator Megan Kerrigan Byron, who reportedly removed her husband's last name from her Facebook profile before deleting her account altogether following the incident. Cabot, who is married to Ken Thornby, president of trucking company Middie Back Inc, joined the company at the end of last year. Independent film distributor Neon memeified the moment to promote Palo Alto native Dave Franco and his wife Alison Brie's upcoming body horror film 'Together,' which has been embroiled in controversy of its own since June. 'The perfect date night movie,' Neon shared to X, along with a photo of Byron and Cabot wrapped in each other's arms before noticing that they were on the Jumbotron. Others in the comment section of the original TikTok video pointed out other members of the Astronomer team in the background, who seemed to already be aware of the affair. Meanwhile, Martin has attracted his share of public scrutiny regarding his recent split from ' Materialists ' actor Dakota Johnson. The two had been dating for nearly eight years. Wednesday's concert was the second of Coldplay's two back-to-back nights at Gillette Stadium, as part of its 'Music of the Spheres' tour. The band previously performed at Stanford Stadium for two sold-out shows on May 31 and June 1.
