Butch Thompson signs new deal with Auburn baseball
Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball reports that Auburn will keep Butch Thompson around for a few more seasons. Auburn baseball is one of the program's best stretches in history, and is aiming to keep momentum going by giving its head man a contract extension. Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball reported Wednesday that Auburn has signed head baseball coach Butch Thompson to a contract extension this week that will keep him on the Plains until at least 2031. According to Rogers, Thompson has signed a six-year extension with Auburn that includes a $1.5 million base salary with incentives that roll into 2033. As part of this extension, Auburn assistant coaches will also see an increase to their salaries. Auburn hired Thompson ahead of the 2016 season, and has won 324 games while leading the Tigers to six postgame appearances and two trips to the College World Series. In that stretch, Auburn won 40 games three times and won at least 35 games two additional times. Last season, Auburn won 41 games and hosted its first-ever Super Regional at Plainsman Park. In addition to Auburn's success on the field, the program has seen many enhancements to Plainsman Park. The home venue for Tigers baseball now has a capacity of over 7,000 and experienced several attendance records broken. Multiple club levels have been added to Plainsman Park, as well as seats to the "War Eagle Wall" and a new student seating area in right field. Auburn baseball recently set a program record for the most picks taken in the first round of the MLB draft this year, as five Tigers, including first round pick Ike Irish, heard their name called within the first 290 picks. Auburn baseball is in great hands under Butch Thompson, and the program is expected to continue trending upward under his watch. Who drafted Clemson outfielder Cam Cannarella in 2025 MLB draft? Full pick, signing info
It might have taken longer than some expected for Clemson Tigers outfielder Cam Cannarella to hear his name called in the 2025 MLB draft Sunday night in Atlanta, but the three-year college star is nevertheless headed to the next level. The Miami Marlins selected Cannarella with the 43rd overall pick in the Competitive Balance Round of the draft, one pick before the draft's second round began. The slot value for where Cannarella was drafted is $2.28 million. Heading into the night, Cannarella was ranked the No. 36 overall prospect by Cannarella had a remarkable three-year run at Clemson, posting a career .360 batting average and 1.004 OPS while playing in 178 games for coach Erik Bakich. With Cannarella in the lineup, the Tigers advanced to a Super Regional in 2024 for the first time in 14 years and made the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons, winning the ACC in 2023. Cannarella is the first Clemson player to be drafted by the Marlins organization since outfielder Kris Harvey was selected in the second round at No. 64 overall in the 2005 draft. His play in the outfield was just as impressive. Among Cannarella's highlight reel plays, none were as jaw-dropping as his Willie Mays' style catch in the Clemson Super Regional against the Florida Gators in 2024. This past season, Cannarella batted a team-high .353 while playing in 61 of the Tigers' 63 games. His home run production dipped a bit after undergoing surgery following the 2024 season, but he hit five long balls to go with a team-leading 22 doubles and 52 RBIs in 2025. He reached base at a .479 clip. Cannarella totaled 23 home runs, 54 doubles, and 159 RBIs in three seasons at Clemson. He also stole 30 bases in 41 attempts, the bulk of which came during his freshman season in 2023 (24-of-29). The Tigers finished the 2025 season 45-18 overall and were ranked No. 20 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after being eliminated from the NCAA Tournament following back-to-back losses to West Virginia and Kentucky in the Clemson Regional. Clemson climbed to as high as No. 2 in the Coaches Poll in the regular season and reached the ACC Tournament's championship game against North Carolina. A year ago, Clemson had five players taken in the MLB draft, including four in the first five rounds: infielder Blake Wright (fourth round, Colorado Rockies), right-hander Austin Gordon (fourth round, Los Angeles Angels), outfielder Will Taylor (fifth round, Pittsburgh Pirates), left-hander Tristan Smith (fifth round, Cincinnati Reds), and right-hander Rocco Reid (15th round, Arizona Diamondbacks). Clemson baseball signee selected by New York Yankees in MLB draft Shortstop Dax Kilby, who had signed with the Tigers out of Newnan High School in Georgia, was the first player with Clemson ties to be selected in the draft. Kilby was ranked as the No. 62 overall prospect by but was drafted well ahead of that projection by the Yankees with the 39th overall pick. Another incoming Clemson signee to watch in the draft is left-hander Nick Frusco from Miller Place High School in New York. Frusco made top 250 draft prospect rankings at No. 249 overall. Outfielder Ryan Wideman, who transferred to Clemson from Western Kentucky following an All-American season in 2024, is also a name to watch in this year's draft. Wideman ranks as No. 155 overall draft prospect after batting a team-best .398 with 10 home runs, 36 extra base hits and 68 RBIs this past season. He stole 45 bases in 47 attempts as a top-of-the-order threat. Contact us @Clemson_Wire on X, and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Clemson Tigers news and notes, plus opinions.

Clemson softball officially adds four transfers to its 2025-26 roster
Clemson softball is bolstering its roster with four new additions from the transfer portal ahead of the 2025-26 season, head coach John Rittman announced this week. The Tigers have landed Kiley Channell (FAU), Abby Dunning (Boston College), Corri Hicks (Oklahoma) and Sierra Maness (USC Upstate) as they look to build on their recent ACC Tournament title and another NCAA Super Regional run. Channell, an infielder from Keystone Heights, Florida, brings an impressive bat after two standout seasons at FAU. She earned 2025 AAC Second Team honors and was named the league's Rookie of the Year in 2024. Channell batted .330 this past season with 59 hits and 44 RBIs, and she set a school record with five hits in the game that clinched the AAC regular-season title against Tulsa. She also ranked among the nation's top doubles hitters as a freshman, finishing with 19 two-baggers in 2024. In the circle, Clemson adds a big arm in graduate transfer Abby Dunning. The Burr Ridge, Illinois native was a mainstay for Boston College, earning spots on the 2024 All-ACC Third Team and ACC All-Tournament Team. She fanned 172 batters last season — third-most in the conference — and posted a 2.46 ERA while limiting hitters to a .207 average over 33 appearances. Dunning was also recognized on the College Sports Evaluators Preseason Top 50 Pitchers List for 2025. Behind the plate, Corri Hicks comes in from Oklahoma with two years of eligibility remaining. Hicks played in 24 games for the Sooners, including a postseason appearance where she homered in an 8-0 Norman Regional win. She wrapped up her freshman year with three home runs and showed flashes of power and run production whenever called on. Rounding out the incoming transfer group is Sierra Maness, a junior right-hander from USC Upstate. Maness was a force in the Big South, earning First Team All-Conference honors this spring after striking out 120 batters in 166 innings. Over two years with the Spartans, she notched 34 wins, three saves and 244 total strikeouts with a career ERA of 2.34. The new transfers will join a core group of 13 returners who helped guide Clemson to its first ACC Tournament crown and third Super Regional berth in the past four seasons. They'll also be part of a large 2025-26 signing class that includes seven incoming freshmen: Sarah Breaux, Sophie Burmeister, Keira Crosby, Lexie Hames, Maddie Johnson, Mac Pavese and Sarah Rocheleau. With a mix of experienced talent and young prospects, Rittman and the Tigers look poised to stay in the national conversation and build on the momentum they've created in recent years.
