Google comes out on top as years-long Mexico antitrust case closed

Cofece said in a statement on Friday that its analysis had determined that Google users were not required to purchase advertising on third-party websites in order to purchase advertising on the Google search engine.
"We appreciate COFECE's decision recognizing that our products give advertisers the freedom and control to use our tools in the ways that best suit their needs," a Google spokesperson said.
Google had been facing a fine of up to 8% of its annual revenue in Mexico if Cofece determined it engaged in monopolistic practices.
Google parent Alphabet does not include specific revenue numbers for Mexico in its earnings reports, but according to annual results for 2024, the company's revenue for its "other Americas" region, which includes Latin America, was about $20.4 billion.
Google is facing antitrust challenges around the world as regulators fear how its search engine gives it an advantage.
In the United States, a U.S. district judge last year ruled Google holds an unlawful monopoly in online search and related advertising.
The U.S. Justice Department and a coalition of states want Google to share search data and cease multibillion-dollar payments to Apple and other smartphone makers to be the default search engine on new devices.
In a separate case, a U.S. federal judge said Google illegally dominated two markets for online advertising technology, with the Justice Department saying that Google should sell off at least its Google Ad Manager, which includes the company's publisher ad server and its ad exchange.

Google is releasing a mandatory Android 16 update for all Pixel 6a phone users starting July 8 to reduce the risk of a potential battery overheating issue. The US technology company, in an update to the Pixel support page, revealed that the Pixel 6a smartphones that have been affected by a battery overheating issue will see a decrease in battery back-up and charging speed after this update. As per Google, the Pixel 6a phones that have completed at least 400 charge cycles will be eligible for this 'battery management feature.' Users who have yet to complete 400 charge cycles will not be affected by this, as the said feature will only get triggered after they cross this limit. Notably, users will get an alert when they complete 375 charge cycles that soon the battery management feature will be activated (automatically). Why is this being done? According to a PhoneArena report published on May 18, incidents were being reported of swollen batteries in Pixel 6a smartphones. It also stated that one Pixel 6a smartphone caught fire after the battery swelled. In general, swollen batteries indicate a serious issue, and they can lead to fire, explosion, or leakage of harmful chemicals. An immediate battery replacement is suggested in such scenarios. Following these incidents, Google has planned this move to safeguard its users. The Pixel support page read: 'Google has determined that certain Pixel 6a phones ('Impacted Devices') require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating, which could pose a risk to users.' The US technology company has, however, clarified that the changes that come with this Android 16 update will only activate if they have an 'impacted device' and once their phone's battery has completed 400 charge cycles. Users can check if their device has been impacted by a battery overheating issue by visiting the Pixel support page. What help is Google offering? Google is offering three options for assistance to Pixel 6a users in dealing with this issue. Firstly, the company is offering a no-cost imposed battery replacement—via in-person or mail-in repair—for eligible consumers who own the 'impacted device.' Additionally, if they are not eligible for the free battery replacement programme, then the Pixel support page also talks about a 'cash payment' or Google Store 'hardware discount credit' towards another Pixel phone. In simpler words, hardware discount credit refers to promotional credit offered by Google on their Store, which can be used to purchase other Google hardware products, like accessories or another Pixel phone. Notably, the in-person and mail-in free battery replacement for eligible Indian users will begin on July 21 and last till battery supplies last. Additionally, users will need to choose which support option they want to proceed with before the deadline of July 8, 2026, as these support options will cease to exist beyond that point.

Stealth app Catwatchful caught spying on thousands of phones, leak reveals emails, passwords and its own admin
A stealth app called Catwatchful has allegedly been caught in its own trap after a major security flaw exposed sensitive data of both its users and victims. The app, which disguises itself as a child-monitoring tool, has been silently stealing data from thousands of Android phones – including photos, messages, location details, and even live audio from microphones and cameras. But a newly discovered vulnerability has turned the tables. advertisementCanadian security researcher Eric Daigle found that Catwatchful's database was completely exposed online due to a misconfigured, unauthenticated API. This meant that anyone could access sensitive data, including the email addresses and plain-text passwords of over 62,000 customers, along with private phone data from more than 26,000 victims. The majority of affected devices were located in countries like India, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Ecuador, and Bolivia. The exposed data includes records stretching back as early as 2018. In a blog post, Daigle explained that Catwatchful operates by being manually installed on a victim's device by someone with physical access – often a romantic partner or family member – making it a form of stalkerware. Daigle's investigation also revealed that Catwatchful used Google Firebase to host stolen data, like users' photos and real-time audio recordings. Upon being alerted, Google said it had added Catwatchful to its Play Protect tool to warn Android users of the spyware. advertisementThe breach didn't just expose victims, it also revealed the identity of Catwatchful's operator. The developer behind the spyware was identified as Omar Soca Charcov, a software engineer residing in Uruguay, according to a report by TechCrunch. Charcov's details, including his personal email, phone number, and even the Firebase web address used to store stolen data, were found in the database. Charcov's LinkedIn profile used the same email address found in the spyware data, as per the report. He reportedly also linked his personal email account to the administrator account for Catwatchful, making it easy to trace him as the operator. Following the discovery, Daigle informed the hosting provider for Catwatchful's API, which briefly suspended the spyware's services. However, the API later returned via HostGator. Google is apparently reviewing whether Catwatchful violated its Firebase terms, but at the time of writing the story, the app's database remains online.- Ends
