Amazon Ends Speedy Delivery by Kia Soul in Favor of Gig Workers

Bloomberg20-06-2025
Amazon.com Inc. is ending an experiment that saw drivers in Kia Souls make same-day deliveries and will rely on its network of gig-economy workers instead.
In the test, Amazon contract delivery firms in several US states deployed drivers for four- or five-hours shifts in the boxy little Kia Corp. hatchbacks. The trial, which began to roll out in 2023, gave the world's largest online retailer more control over deliveries. If widely deployed, it also could have reduced the company's reliance on Amazon Flex drivers, who use their own cars to ferry orders to customers' homes. Those gig workers will now pick up the affected routes.

Stock Movers: Tesla, US Retail, Centene

On this edition of Stock Movers: - Tesla (TSLA) shares jumped after the carmaker posted a less drastic decline in vehicle sales than the most pessimistic analysts feared. The company delivered 384,122 vehicles during the last three months, down 13% from a year earlier. While that leaves Tesla in a deep hole to dig out from to avoid another annual drop, some investors were braced for a more than 20% plunge. 'We're at the bottom here,' Gene Munster, managing partner of Deepwater Asset Management, said on Bloomberg Television. - Nike (NKE), Lululemon (LULU), GAP (GAP) and other US retail shares are up after President Donald Trump said he had reached a trade deal with Vietnam following weeks of intense diplomacy between the nations and ahead of a deadline next week that would have seen higher tariffs imposed on the country's imports. A 20% tariff will be placed on Vietnamese exports to the US, with a 40% levy on any goods deemed to be transshipped through the country, Trump said in a social-media post on Wednesday. Trump said that Vietnam had agreed to drop all levies on US imports. - Health insurer Centene (CNC) shares are down as they shocked investors Tuesday when it withdrew its profit outlook on precipitously rising risks from Affordable Care Act plans, sending shares plummeting the most on record. The company appears to have been badly caught off guard by the impact of US government actions. It's an ominous sign for insurers, whose purpose is to price for risk but have lately been blindsided by it.

Amazon to shut down Freevee streaming TV service in August

Amazon is discontinuing its standalone free streaming TV service next month as it looks to consolidate its content offerings under Prime Video. The service, called Freevee, launched in 2019 underneath IMDb, the film and TV site Amazon bought in 1998. It offered a stable of free, ad-supported video, including original series and some Prime Video content, primarily through an app. The Freevee app will shut down in August, at which point users will be able to watch shows and movies on Prime Video for free without a subscription to Amazon's Prime loyalty program, according to a notice to users. "Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV," the notice states. Amazon telegraphed last November that the company would wind down the Freevee service to "deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers," Deadline reported. The company is sunsetting Freevee after introducing ads on Prime Video in January 2024. Prime Video is included in a $15-a-month Prime membership, or as a standalone service for $9. Users can pay an additional $2 a month to forgo ads.

If you're like me, earbuds have become an indispensable accessory during commutes, travel and while waiting in long lines. However, not everyone can afford high-end audio accessories from Apple or Samsung. Thankfully, budget-friendly substitutes are available, and some of them are even cheaper due to forthcoming sales events. We've spotted Skullcandy ANC earbuds for just $100 at Amazon ahead of Fourth of July and Prime Day. Best Buy is also matching this price for black and bone colorways, offering plenty of opportunities to save $30 for a limited time. Skullcandy's ANC earbuds come in a compact case with a key chain, making them easy to attach to your keys, purse or a smart tracker. They come in five colors, and Amazon's discount applies to all of them. Skullcandy's earbuds include sound by Bose, and CNET's David Carnoy said he was "mostly impressed with the new buds, which sound better than most of the earbuds in this price class" in his review. Despite their humble price tag, Bose's contributions to these earbuds mean you'll get high-fidelity sound, deep bass and superior noise cancelation. Workout and fitness enthusiasts can enjoy these earbuds during their routine thanks to their IPX4 waterproof rating, which means they can withstand sweat from even the most grueling exercise session. Plus, the long-lasting battery can last a 40-hour week on a single charge. Should you run out of battery, a quick 10 minutes in the case will give you up to two extra hours of listening time. But keep in mind that these earbuds can't be wirelessly charged. If you want to shop around, check out our list of the best wireless earbuds. We're also keeping up with all upcoming Fourth of July and early Prime Day deals, so you can save with the latest discounts. Why this deal matters These Skullcandy ANC earbuds have audio design from Bose, which makes them an excellent alternative to higher-end earbuds on the market. And you can save $30 at Amazon for these earbuds in any color or save $30 at Best Buy for bone or black colorways. In either case, this is a great time to buy these earbuds if you've been looking for a new pair.
