MELBOURNE (AP)An Australian domestic flight was delayed for two hours after a stowaway snake was found in the plane's cargo hold, officials said on Wednesday. The snake was found on Tuesday as passengers were boarding Virgin Australia Flight VA337 at Melbourne Airport bound for Brisbane, according to snake catcher Mark Pelley. The snake turned out to be a harmless 60-centimeter (2-foot) green tree snake. But Pelly said he thought it could be venomous when he approached it in the darkened hold.'It wasn't until after I caught the snake that I realised that it wasn't venomous. Until that point, it looked very dangerous to me,' Pelley said. Most of the world's most venomous snakes are native to Australia. For quarantine reasons, the snake can't be returned to the wild.
The snake, which is a protected species, has been given to a Melbourne veterinarian to find a home with a licensed snake keeper.

Emirates Courier Express Launches in Australia to Boost Fast Cross-Border Deliveries

Emirates has expanded its Emirates Courier Express service into Australia, marking a major step forward in reshaping cross-border logistics for businesses and consumers. Just months after its initial launch, the service now connects Australia to key international markets with unmatched delivery speed, flexibility, and reliability. Packages will be flown directly into four major Australian cities—Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney—on 70 weekly Emirates flights. With carefully aligned flight schedules, Emirates Courier Express ensures seamless door-to-door delivery across Australia, supported by a strong local first- and last-mile logistics partner. Dennis Lister, Senior Vice President of Product and Innovation at Emirates SkyCargo, stated: 'Since the early test phase of Emirates Courier Express, we knew Australia would be a key market… This is the evolution of our 30-year journey in the country, supporting both businesses and shoppers with cross-border deliveries.' Australia has seen a 45% increase in inbound small parcel volume over the past two years, reflecting a rise in online shopping. However, only 6% of international consumers currently purchase from Australian retailers due to challenges like delivery costs and long shipping times. Emirates Courier Express aims to resolve these pain points by offering a more direct and efficient alternative to traditional hub-and-spoke models. The service leverages Emirates' extensive passenger flight network and SkyCargo infrastructure, significantly reducing transit time and handling. This allows for faster delivery of everything from consumer goods to sensitive medical equipment. Additionally, Emirates Courier Express is a fully digital solution that integrates directly with customer platforms. It offers advanced package tracking and real-time updates, giving full visibility throughout the journey, improving the overall delivery experience for both businesses and end consumers. Bali flights cancelled after huge Indonesia volcano eruption

Dozens of flights to and from Indonesia's Bali island were cancelled Monday after a volcano belched a colossal ash tower 18 kilometres (11 miles) into the sky, authorities said. The aviation disruption came just weeks after the same rumbling volcano caused dozens of flight cancellations to and from the popular resort island. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, on the tourist island of Flores, erupted at 11:05 am (0305 GMT), the volcanology agency said. "An eruption of Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano occurred... with the observed ash column height reaching approximately 18,000 m above the summit," the agency said in a statement. It forced the cancellation of 24 flights at Bali's international airport, general manager Ahmad Syaugi Shahab said. "Several airlines serving the routes to Labuan Bajo (on Flores), Australia, Singapore, and South Korea have confirmed cancellations and delays," he said in a statement. He said the airlines included Virgin Australia, Jetstar Airways and AirAsia Indonesia. Despite some carriers cancelling flights, the airport manager said "the spread of volcanic ash has not affected the Bali airspace". Australia's Jetstar said several flights were cancelled "due to volcanic ash caused by an eruption of Mount Lewotobi". - 'Explosive eruptions' - The volcanology agency warned of the possibility of hazardous lahar floods –- a type of mud or debris flow of volcanic materials –- if heavy rain occurs, particularly for communities near rivers. There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties. The activity level at the volcano was "very high, marked by explosive eruptions and continuous tremors", geology agency head Muhammad Wafid said in a statement. He also urged residents to stay at least six kilometres (3.7 miles) away from the volcano and to wear face masks to protect themselves from ash. Last month dozens of flights to and from Bali were cancelled after the volcano erupted. Ash rained down on several communities around the volcano and forced the evacuation of at least one village. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted multiple times in November, killing nine people and forcing thousands to evacuate, as well as the cancellation of scores of international flights to Bali. Laki-Laki, which means man in Indonesian, stands at 1,584 metres (5,197 feet) and is twinned with the calmer but taller 1,703-metre volcano named Perempuan, after the Indonesian word for woman. Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation, experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire".

China's first Legoland opens to tourists in Shanghai

Thousands of local tourists poured into China's first-ever Legoland as it opened its gates in Shanghai on Saturday, the latest theme park hoping to capitalise on a domestic tourism boom. The Chinese branch of the British-owned theme park franchise is the biggest Legoland in the world. It drew in early customers who flocked to attractions including a miniature train ride and a dragon-themed rollercoaster. AFP "I personally love to play with Lego blocks and we have many sets at home... so I wanted to come to Legoland at the earliest opportunity," said Shi, a 35-year-old resident of nearby city Hangzhou, who was visiting the park with his wife and child. Despite the Chinese economy's sluggish growth in recent years, domestic tourist spending grew 18.6 per cent in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous year, according to statistics. AP "Ever since the pandemic, I've made very few trips abroad," said Shi, adding his family now travels to theme parks around China "many times a year." Eager Lego fans rushed into the park as soon as it opened, wearing themed shirts and waving branded flags as they enjoyed the 318,000-square-metre (78.5-acre) compound in scorching temperatures. Reuters Beijing has announced subsidies intended to make travelling within the country more affordable for Chinese citizens, and is pushing local governments to heavily market their attractions on social media. Companies have taken note of the wider local tourism boom and stepped up their plans in China. A woman and child pose on a ride at Legoland Shanghai Resort. Toy giant Hasbro said this week its giant Peppa Pig park in the city was now "in the phase of creative design." Workers guide Lego mascot characters during the opening of Legoland Shanghai. AP Chinese collectable toy maker Pop Mart has also opened an attraction in Beijing featuring life-sized versions of its popular Labubu toys. "The various provinces are putting a lot of effort into expanding their tourism industries, and all of them have special attractions," said Xu, a 34-year-old parent visiting Legoland on Saturday with his children. But profitability remains a problem, especially for local companies with less brand recognition. Reuters As of late 2024, around 40 percent of parks were still failing to turn a profit, according to state media reports. Yet analysts point to a growing population of retirees and job market changes as key factors pushing more locals to visit domestic attractions. "The labour market is turning more flexible," said Ernan Cui, China consumer analyst at Gavekal Research. "More people have leisure time to travel around." Agence France-Presse
