World's most powerful passports in 2025 revealed as the UK drops in rankings
Link is copied Comments The world's most powerful passports in 2025 have been revealed, and it doesn't look too great for the UK. Or the US for that matter. The results have been decided by the Henley Passport Index, the global official ranking of all the world's passports. It's based on the number of international destinations holders can access without a visa (Picture: Getty Images) The UK passport currently sits in sixth place, after falling to number five at the beginning of this year. In 2024, it was at a much stronger fourth position: passport owners had visa-free access to 191 destinations. Now, it's been reduced to 186. From 2013 to 2015, the British passport took the number one spot (Picture: Getty Images) The US, meanwhile, currently ranks in 10th place, having been bumped down from ninth last year. Currently, it sits alongside Iceland and Lithuania. These nationals have a lower 182 visa-free destinations accessible to them. Back in 2014, US passports came in first place, so in recent years, there's been a significant drop in their power (Picture: Getty Images) Singapore has the most powerful passport for the second year in a row. The Asian nation has access to 193 destinations and offers seamless travel for its holders. Japanese and South Korean passports rank in joint second place, with 190 visa-free destinations, while Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain are all in joint third. They can easily visit 189 countries (Picture: Getty Images) It's all well and good sharing the world's most powerful passports, but where does the authority come from? The Henley Passport Index was launched in 2005 by the investment firm Henley Global. Originally, it was known as the Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index. In 2018, it was shortened to what we know today. It ranks 199 of the world's passports, and publishes quarterly findings (Picture: Getty Images) The index uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which assesses travel restriction information. The research is only based on 'normal' passports, and excludes diplomatic or emergency documents. Temporary airspace restrictions are also ignored (Picture: Getty Images) Following the most recent ratings, Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO at Henley & Partners, explained that passports are no longer just a travel document — they're a 'reflection of your country's diplomatic influence and international relationships.' He stated in the index findings that 'as the US and UK adopt increasingly inward-looking policies, we're witnessing a marked rise in interest from their citizens seeking greater global access and security.' He also said that, in an era of 'growing inequality and mounting geopolitical uncertainty, strategic mobility and citizenship planning are more critical than ever' (Picture: Getty Images) On the next slide, you'll find the top 10 most powerful passports, along with their number of visa-free destinations, from the most recent index. It actually includes 36 countries, due to many being tied in their power (Picture: Getty Images) 1. Singapore – 193 visa-free destinations 2. Japan, South Korea – 190 visa-free destinations 3. Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain – 189 visa-free destinations 4. Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden – 188 visa-free destinations 5. Greece, New Zealand, Switzerland – 187 visa-free destinations 6. United Kingdom – 186 visa-free destinations 7. Australia, Czechia, Hungary, Malta, Poland – 185 visa-free destinations 8. Canada, Estonia, UAE – 184 visa-free destinations 9. Croatia, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia – 183 visa-free destinations 10. Iceland, Lithuania, United States – 182 visa-free destinations (Picture: Getty Images)

Exciting Italian restaurant to take over Glasgow unit
Malocchio is preparing to open in the old Mediterraneo site on Ingram Street. The eatery's name is the deeply ingrained Southern Italian superstition around the evil eye and its logo is Il Corno, a horn believed to deflect the negative intentions of others and bring positivity, love and good living. Romano Perella(Image: Supplied)Owner Romano Perella said: 'This is really exciting for us. Malocchio is the first concept I've personally created from scratch, which has helped shape the positive feeling around it all. 'For us, Malocchio is all about positivity, about negativity bouncing off the shield of good vibes so none of the bad stuff in life gets to you. 'I want it to be a sanctuary, an escape from your daily life and problems, from the world and the negative energy – inside it's all smiles and that sigh of truly relaxing for whatever time you can take." Malocchio will serve small plates, aimed at three dishes per person with house-made, fresh pasta in the spotlight. Planned interior (Image: Supplied) READ NEXT: Popular Italian restaurant announces closure - here's what's next Romano continued: 'The food is at the very heart of it all so that's the key – everything freshly made on site and totally looking to that rich culture and tradition I grew up with for inspiration. 'I'm not reinventing the wheel – this restaurant is showcasing the amazing heritage Italy has given me, using all I have learned to create something genuinely new and different. 'It's grown from family and tradition but presented in a modern way that's still respectful to the old ideas. 'Ultimately, this is a very modern take on Italian cuisine, which isn't available in Glasgow at the moment. 'That's what the name and the concept are about – and it doesn't matter if you believe in superstition or not, you will believe in our food." The restaurant is scheduled to open late August. (Image: Supplied) The owner added: "I'm excited to show people what we are building in terms of the room itself, transforming the former Mediterraneo completely. You won't believe it's the same place. 'But also what we are building as a concept with a real social feel, a relaxed, modern dining experience with superb cocktails, wines and of course a style of food that you just can't get in the city at the moment. 'I hope Glasgow loves Malocchio – it's very special to me and I want it to be a real experience, something people look forward to as a break from real life.'

The Brendan Rodgers Celtic joke to send shivers up fans' spines as Como stuns while battering the wallet
Our man Michael took to water but is going to need a bigger boatload of cash to stay fed if the Hoops are here until Sunday There's no doubt Como is one of the prettiest places on the planet – but it's also pretty steep, writes Michael Gannon in Como. Celtic fans hit the city ahead of the Ajax game and they very quickly got hit in the wallet. You'd be lucky to get a beer for less than a tenner and good luck getting a bit of dinner for less than 50 quid. Put it this way, we popped in to one restaurant for a wee bowl of spag bol – but could only afford the Parmesan cheese. There are some expenses you can't avoid though. Like taking a boat trip on Lake Como. It's an experience too good to pass up on, and there are ways to do it that won't break the bank. Unfortunately it means getting up at 6.30am to queue for tickets for the cheaper ferries. It wasn't the easiest alarm call after a late night watching Nicolas Kuhn in action for Como and hiking it back to the digs well after midnight. Incredibly, there was still a huge line, even at that ridiculous time in the morning, but at least the seats were in the bag. It turns out you get what you pay for. The ferry that turned up for our group looked like the boat from Jaws – only in worse shape. There were no outside viewing spaces so everyone was below deck. That would have been fine if the windows were half decent. But these things could have done with a good scrub. We were scooting along the water alongside some of the most beautiful scenery in the world – yet could barely see a thing. Just as well the boat stopped at the various towns and villages along the lake, including the stunning Bellagio. Turns out it's not much like the Las Vegas Hotel but it's every bit as expensive. It doesn't have a Greggs either so it was more antipasti rather than a cheese and onion pasty, and the wallet suffered another dent. There won't be any such problems for the Celtic squad though, over in their swanky base around the bay. Brendan Rodgers revealed he'd been here before as a guest of Watford's Italian owners when he was in charge of the hornets and he seemed to enjoy being back in town. The Hoops boss was in the stands for the Como game against Al Ahli, along with coach Gavin Strachan and goalie coach Stevie Woods, with either side up next for his men. Rodgers was in good form, cracking jokes at his press conference with the local media. At one point a journo asked Callum McGregor how he keeps things fresh after so much success. 'Changing managers', Rodgers laughed, which might have sent an even bigger shiver up the spine of Celtic fans than the drinks bill.
