Channel Ten sacked ‘blindsided' Australian Survivor host Jonathan La Paglia through 'clinical and cold' email, sources reveal
A Ten spokesperson on Monday confirmed the upcoming season of Survivor: Australia V The World will be the last series hosted by La Paglia, who already filmed the show before its premiere in the coming months.
'JLP has brought a unique blend of authority, intelligence and empathy to his role as host of Australian Survivor over the last 10 years," the spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au in a statement.
"Acting as a referee and managing the intense pressure of the game while also acknowledging the human drama unfolding, JLP has been a compelling and memorable figure in the world of Survivor."
Despite no apparent signs of animosity between the network and La Paglia amid his sudden axing on Monday, the TV host appeared to suggest otherwise in a statement addressing his departure on Instagram.
"Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all…because it happened to me," the 55-year-old wrote in a caption on Monday.
"Whoever said a blindside is the most humane way to put someone down is an idiot. It hurts like a bitch!"
La Paglia said he found out about his sacking through a phone call from Ten informing him Survivor was "going in a different direction" next season.
However, production first told the TV veteran he was out of a job via a "clinical" and "cold" email, Daily Mail Australia reported on Wednesday.
Before Ten had a chance to break the news to La Paglia, the host received an email from Survivor's production company, Endemol Shine Australia.
"He got an email first. That was the initial comms from EndemolShine,' a source told the publication.
"Then a call came from Ten, but by then it was already done.
"It's really not how you treat someone who's been part of the show for almost a decade."
La Paglia reportedly received the sudden email before he had finished filming Survivor: Australia vs. The World, set to air mid-to-late this year.
And the decision to let him go was made well before the season began filming last year but was kept a secret to avoid overshadowing the show.
One source said the move was "locked in" for months, but production wanted to "avoid backlash during the show's filming and post-promotion."
Former model and Australian Survivor: All-Stars champion David Genant is reportedly tipped to replace La Paglia as host of the game show.
Genant recently won $8.7 million on the US TV game show Deal or No Deal Island and is set to compete in Survivor: Australia V The World.
The new season will mark the TV star's third time on the series, and he has previously hosted popular travel shows Rush and Getaway.
Neverthelss, a production insider told Daily Mail Australia not everyone is convinced he's La Paglia's best replacement.
"He doesn't fit the brief," the insider said.
"He's charismatic, sure - but Survivor needs someone with gravitas. David is not Jonathan, and viewers will notice that."
The massive shakeup at 10 comes as Australian Survivor struggles with a rating slump.
The last season, Brains vs. Brawn II, saw viewership dip to 486,000 total overnight viewers, a far cry from the many millions it attracted in its prime.
Survivor features a group of contestants known as "castaways" living in an isolated outdoor location in Samoa.
There, they must provide for themselves by gathering food, water, fire, and shelter while competing in challenges for awards and immunity.
The castaways are progressively eliminated by their peers, with the last member crowned Sole Survivor and awarded the grand prize of $500,000.

Kylie Jenner takes huge step in Timothée Chalamet relationship
Kylie Jenner has taken a huge step in her relationship with Timothée Chalamet - by following him on Instagram. The 27-year-old businesswoman boasts 393 million followers on the photo-sharing site, but she is quite choosy about who she follows - with only 119 profiles making the cut. However, one of those is now her boyfriend of two years. Fans of TyMothée - the pair's most popular ship name - have been driven into a frenzy after spotting Kylie has allowed the A Complete Unknown actor into her close social circle. However, at the time of writing, the follow is yet to be reciprocated. The 29-year-old actor has 19.7 million Instagram followers, and has only shared 147 posts, compared with Kylie's whopping 7,244 posts. But the Kardashians star shouldn't feel hard-done-by by her boyfriend's social snub - because he doesn't follow anybody on Instagram. That's including his ex-girlfriend Eiza Gonzalez, who recently admitted she is "obsessed" by his new romance with reality star Kylie. During an appearance in Cosmopolitan magazine's online video series Cheap Shots, Eiza explained: "They look so cute together. They look so in love and so cute, I'm obsessed with them, and I love Timmy." She added of the Dune star: "I think he's the most talented, sweetest - honestly, sweetest boy - and I'm just so proud to see him thriving and doing great in his career, and we're just good friends. "I have nothing but amazing things to say about him." Chalamet has been romancing Kylie - who is mom to Stormi, seven, and three-year-old Aire with ex-boyfriend Travis Scott - since April 2023, and their relationship has won the seal of approval from Timothee's mother Nicole Flender. The real estate agent told Curbed: 'I have to say she's lovely. She's very nice to me.'

‘Cold': Survivor star Jonathan LaPaglia reportedly ‘fired over email'
New details about how longtime Survivor host Jonathan LaPaglia was axed from the show have been revealed. The Australian TV host, who has helmed the Channel 10 show since its revival in 2016, will not return as a presenter next year. LaPaglia initially made a statement telling fans that he had been 'blindsided' by the network, and now it's been claimed that the long-running star was informed of his sacking via a 'cold' email. 'He got an email first,' a source told Daily Mail. 'That was the initial comms from EndemolShine.' 'Then a call came from Ten, but by then it was already done. It's really not how you treat someone who's been part of the show for almost a decade.' To make matters worse, the source alleges that LaPaglia received the sudden email before he had finished filming Survivor: Australia vs. The World. The insider claimed that the decision to fire LaPaglia was 'locked in' for months, but in order to avoid any trouble during the filming of his latest season they wanted to wait until the show was complete. Taking to Instagram to address earlier reports he'd been let go, LaPaglia confirmed to fans he'd been 'blindsided' over being dropped. 'Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all …. because it happened to me,' he began a lengthy statement. 'I received a call from the Network thanking me for all my hard work and dedication to the show but for next season they are 'going in a different direction'. Ratings had dipped a bit recently and they wanted to do something drastic to shake things up. 'So for the first time ever this is not a tribe swap, but a HOST SWAP¸ Yes, you read that right.' LaPaglia went on to say the decision 'hurt like a b***h'. 'I wish I could say, 'Before we go to vote, tonight is a little different ….no one's going home.' But I can't. None of that non-elim bulls**t tonight! Someone IS going home. And with no idol in my back pocket, that someone is me,' he wrote. 'I have loved and will dearly miss the immensely talented crew, all the crafty players and our loyal sassy audience. I'm a huge fan of this incredible game, always have been, always will be.'
