China's visa-free policy pays dividends as overseas entries soar in 2025
Shanghai, the country's financial hub, saw 2.6 million visits from abroad in the first six months of 2025, up 44.8% year-on-year, according to local authorities. About 1.4 million of them entered China under a visa-free policy, more than three times the figure observed in the same period last year.
South Korea, Japan, the United States, Thailand and Russia were among the top sources of foreign arrivals, and the city's Pudong International Airport was top-ranked in the country for overseas traffic with 2.37 million entries.
The national capital of Beijing saw over 840,000 visa-free arrivals - double the figure from the same period last year - out of 1.49 million total entries from abroad.
In the southwestern metropolis of Chengdu, 287,000 entries were made under the visa-free policy in the first half of this year, up 120% from the first six months of 2024.
The southern island province of Hainan - now designated the country's largest free trade port - saw 663,000 foreign entries and exits, up 48% from 2024. About 89% came under a visa-free scheme; the province allows 30-day stays without a visa for citizens of 59 countries, unique among Chinese regions.
James Liang, chairman of China's leading online travel service Ctrip, said the policy has been a boon for travel businesses.
"Our inbound tourism has already recovered to 70 to 80% of pre-Covid levels. It could be fully recovered this year," he was quoted by Shanghai-based media outlet The Paper as saying.
"There are still some bottlenecks to be addressed. If they are tackled, China's inbound tourism could reach the world's top tier in 10 or 20 years."
Beijing began expanding its visa-free entry policy in late 2023 to lure foreign tourists and businesspeople back to the country after nearly three years of strict Covid-19 controls.
Many countries, particularly those in Europe and elsewhere in Asia, have received blanket exemptions to visa requirements. Their citizens can visit anywhere in the country during stays of up to 30 days.
Others are able to enter without a visa under certain conditions. Most commonly, nationals can enter while on a documented transit stay while travelling between countries or regions. Last month, the National Immigration Administration added Indonesia to this list.
Passport holders from those countries can stay visa-free for up to 10 days by entering through one of 60 international ports in mainland China.
The scheme, in all its forms, now covers a majority of developed markets as well as much of Southeast Asia, which has strengthened its business ties with China in recent years.
In addition to the visa-free policy, the world's second-largest economy has taken other steps to encourage spending among overseas tourists, including by opening more duty-free shops across the country.

WHA Utilities and Power supplying Saha Farms with solar power
SET-listed WHA Utilities and Power (WHAUP), an arm of WHA Corp, Thailand's biggest industrial land developer and operator, has expanded its renewable energy business outside industrial estates by supplying multi-platform solar power to Saha Farms Group, a Thai agricultural manufacturer. Electricity is generated from 14 projects with diverse solar generation sources, including ground-mounted solar farms, floating solar farms and rooftop solar panels. They have a combined capacity of 46.5 megawatts. The facilities are scheduled to start commercial operations in the fourth quarter of this year, marking WHAUP's development of clean power and Saha Farms' campaign to cut greenhouse gas emissions. "The 14 projects represent a significant expansion of WHAUP's renewable energy business beyond WHA's industrial estates," said Somkiat Masunthasuwun, chief executive of WHAUP. A power handover ceremony was recently held at two key projects: a 20MW solar farm in Phetchabun, and a 9.7MW floating solar farm built in the compound of Saha Farm Co, a Lop Buri-based poultry production firm under Saha Farms Group. The two projects are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 22,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) per year, more than half of the estimated total greenhouse gas reduction from 14 projects. All facilities can reduce up to 35,000 tCO2e annually. WHAUP emphasises the use of innovation to enhance energy management efficiency. All systems are integrated under its unified operations centre, which enables real-time monitoring of power generation, usage, and overall performance. This centralised control ensures consistent delivery of clean energy, fully supporting Saha Farms' ambitious "Go Green" mission. The solar partnership with WHAUP is a crucial component of Saha Farms' comprehensive sustainability strategy, said Jaruwan Chotitawan, finance chief and head of marketing at Saha Farm. Under the Go Green mission, Saha Farms aims to integrate clean energy into all operations, from production and transportation to logistics. The group is conducting a study on the use of battery electric vehicles among its subsidiaries.

Thai Airways ‘has no plans' to resume direct US flights
SINGAPORE - Thai Airways International has no plans to resume direct flights to the United States, despite the US upgrading Thailand's air safety rating this year to permit them, CEO Chai Eamsiri said on Wednesday. Addressing the Reuters NEXT Asia summit in Singapore, Mr Chai said the national carrier's current fleet could not operate such long-distance flights efficiently. He also noted that the US market was a 'big risk' in the current context of tariff negotiations. THAI stopped flying to the United States in 2015, the same year as the US Federal Aviation Administration downgraded the country's air safety rating to Category 2, preventing Thai airlines from launching or expanding services to the United States. Mr Chai also told the Singapore conference that Thai Airways existing option to buy more planes from Boeing as part of Thailand's tariff negotiations with the United States. The flag carrier in February last year said it had ordered 45 Boeing 787-9 wide-body jets with options for a further 35. Thailand has submitted a new trade proposal to the United States in a bid to avoid a steep 36% tariff on its own products starting on Aug 1. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said on Sunday the country could purchase more Boeing aircraft as part of an agreement with Washington. Mr Chai confirmed the finance minister was referring to Thai Airways' option to buy 35 more 787s. In June, THAI exited its debt restructuring programme and said it expects to resume trading its shares on the stock market by early August. The carrier began a bankruptcy-protected restructuring of debt worth 400 billion baht in 2021, reducing its workforce by half and trimming its fleet. Mr Chai said the airline is operating with around 75% of the seat capacity it had before the pandemic, but its revenue has surpassed pre-Covid levels. 'Our efficiency is better than in the past,' he said.
