Heavy rain batters western Odisha with more in store

Bhubaneswar: Two persons were killed in a wall collapse in Nuapada district on Sunday as heavy rainfall across western Odisha in the past 24 hours wreaked havoc. A fresh low-pressure area also formed over Bay of Bengal on Sunday, which is likely to trigger extremely heavy rain in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Sambalpur districts in the next 24 hours, the IMD said.
Due to the downpour, several low-lying areas were inundated, disrupting road connectivity and normal life. Waterlogging has been reported from multiple blocks, prompting the Jharsuguda administration to evacuate residents from affected areas and shift them to safer locations.
Eight places recorded extremely heavy rainfall above 200mm, with four places receiving very heavy rainfall between 100 and 200mm. Deogaon in Jharsuguda recorded the maximum of 306mm rainfall, followed by Bamra in Sambalpur with 285.4mm and Likara in Jharsuguda with 270.4mm.
Other places like Kirmira, Kolabira and Kuchinda recorded rainfall in excess of 220mm.
Under Jharsuguda Municipality limits, several areas experienced severe waterlogging. Residents near the Old Bus Stand staged a road blockade for a few hours, demanding the construction of a proper drainage system, as rainwater entered their homes. After assurance from the authorities, they lifted the blockade.
"We submitted written complaints several times regarding the waterlogging but no action has been taken yet.

The special relief commissioner (SRC) has issued directives to all district collectors to keep their administrative machinery ready to face any eventuality.
"The southwest monsoon, which is active in the state, is likely to gain more steam with the formation of the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood and likely to bring widespread rainfall and potentially intense weather activity along its path. One or two places in the four districts may get extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours," said Sanjeev Dwivedi, weather scientist at IMD's regional centre here.
Till Sunday, the state has received 35% excess rainfall from June 1. The state received cumulative rainfall of 359.8mm against the normal of 265.8mm. Two districts have received deficient rainfall, IMD sources said.

Vande Bharat Express Stranded For 7 Hours In Odisha As Rains Flood Tracks
Torrential rains in Odisha's Keonjhar district on Saturday brought life to a standstill and severely disrupted railway services, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded aboard the Vande Bharat Express for nearly seven hours. The high-speed train, which was en route from Tatanagar to Berhampur, came to a halt around 7 PM at Guhalidiihi station after heavy waterlogging submerged the railway tracks. Nearly three feet of water was reportedly flowing over the tracks, making it unsafe for the train to proceed. Passengers were forced to remain inside the stationary train for hours. Rain brings relief to Delhi-NCR as temperature dips; 'yellow alert' issued
A spell of early morning rain brought much-needed respite from heat and humidity in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday (July 7, 2025). However, the downpour also led to heavy waterlogging in several parts of the city, affecting traffic movement during peak commuting hours. Multiple areas across the capital witnessed light to moderate rainfall, with visuals showing waterlogged roads and commuters wading through puddles under grey skies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 12.0 mm of rainfall at 8:30 am. The minimum temperature in the city dropped to 22.9 degrees Celsius -- five notches below the seasonal average -- offering a cool start to the day. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 33 degrees Celsius, with a generally cloudy sky and continued rain. A 'yellow alert' has been issued for Monday, with thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rainfall predicted throughout the day. Humidity levels reached 100 per cent at 8:30 am, further adding to the dampness in the air. In a bulletin issued at 6:30 am, the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), New Delhi, said on X, "Light to moderate rainfall accompanied with light thunderstorm and lightning (30'40 km/h gusty winds) is likely to occur at entire Delhi and NCR during next two hours." The weather office has forecast similar conditions to persist over the next two days, with very light to light rain expected thereafter. Meanwhile, Delhi residents experienced cleaner air, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 81 - categorised as "satisfactory" by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".
