44-year-old CEO: This No. 1 trait separates the best employees from most other people—'I didn't get here' without it

A certain type of employee stands out from their peers, says Klutch Sports founder and CEO Rich Paul: someone who believes there's no limit to what they can do. Employees who are open to trying new projects at work — or who always raise their hand for opportunities, even if they've never done them before — are more likely to be noticed and rewarded by bosses, says Paul, who gained public recognition as NBA superstar LeBron James' agent and founded his sports agency in 2012. That's especially true for early career professionals and recent grads, Paul tells CNBC Make It. "Try to learn as much as you possibly can and have as much range as you possibly can," says Paul, who also hosts a class on MasterClass called "The Dealmaker's Mindset" that released on June 9th. "There's so much to do. You should never be [bored at] work."Paul learned this lesson firsthand, he added. Before becoming a sports agent, the Cleveland-native hustled to make ends meet. As a kid, he made money playing dice in the neighborhood. He worked at his dad's convenience store, where he learned about entrepreneurship, and built a local clothes-ironing business, he told "The Tim Ferriss Show" in October 2023. At age 21, Paul was running a jersey resale business — sometimes selling out of the trunk of his car — when he met James at an airport and struck up a friendship, he told The New York Times in October 2023. He worked as James' unofficial assistant for about five years before landing a role at Creative Artists Agency, one of the world's most well-known talent agency businesses, working under James' then-agent Leon Rose. After about four years at Creative Artists Agency, Paul founded Klutch Sports Group in 2012. His company now represents athletes including James, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Las Vegas Aces center A'ja Wilson. "I didn't get here because I wanted to be a sports agent. Actually, that was the furthest thing from my mind," says Paul. "But I got here [by] not being complacent and understanding that I have no limitations in terms of my capabilities, and I can start in any role that I'm being asked to play." You can show your ambition at work by simply telling your boss that you're interested taking on new, challenging or exciting projects, says Jenny Wood, a bestselling author and former Google executive. "Agreeing to take notes for every team meeting or showing up early to help decorate for an office party," may not get you the promotion or raise you're looking for, Wood said in December. But "raising your hand to increase a given metric by 20% or volunteering to help drive a reorg and present it to leadership" can make you more successful, she said. If want to do a job you've never done before, you can tell your boss about your curiosity and eagerness to learn. Executives from Bill Gates to Mark Cuban say inquisitiveness is crucial to success, especially in the age of AI. "I can pretend that I'm gonna be able to predict where AI's going and the exact impact on the job market, but I'd be lying, I have no idea," Cuban said in October. "But I do know that I am gonna pay attention, and be agile, and be curious, and be able to adapt."

WNBA expansion teams coming to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia, league announces

The WNBA announced on Monday that Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia will be getting expansion franchises in the coming years. The new team in Cleveland will begin play in 2028, with Detroit following in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030. The league said in a statement that the addition of the three teams 'marks a significant milestone in the WNBA's commitment to growing the game, increasing opportunities for players, and bringing professional women's basketball to new and passionate fanbases in more cities.' 'The demand for women's basketball has never been higher, and we are thrilled to welcome Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia to the WNBA family,' WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement. 'This historic expansion is a powerful reflection of our league's extraordinary momentum, the depth of talent across the game, and the surging demand for investment in women's professional basketball. … We are excited for what these cities will bring to the league – and are confident that these new teams will reshape the landscape of women's basketball.' According to the league, Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia were chosen based on 'analysis of market viability, committed long-term ownership groups, potential for significant local fan, corporate, media, and city and state support, arena and practice facilities, and community commitment to advancing the sport, among other factors.' The three teams will bring the total number of WNBA franchises to 18 by the time the Philadelphia team joins, after teams in Portland and Toronto were revealed in 2024. Both Portland and Toronto will begin playing in 2026. The Golden State Valkyries, the WNBA's newest team, began their debut season this year and are competitive in year one, sporting a 9-7 record in the Western Conference and currently holding the league's No. 6 seed. Women's professional basketball will return to Cleveland for the first time since 2003 when the city's last WNBA team, the Rockers, folded after having been one of the league's original founding eight teams. For Detroit, the WNBA will also make a long-awaited return after the Shock – who played in the Motor City between 1998 and 2009, won three championships and set a single-game attendance record of 22,076 at Game 3 of the 2003 WNBA Finals – moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, before ultimately moving to Dallas and rebranding to the Wings. The WNBA will be debuting in the City of Brotherly Love and will be owned by the same leadership group which runs the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. The WNBA is in its 29th season and has seen remarkable growth of late. According to research by Sportico, the current 13 franchises that make up the league increased in value by an average of 180% over the last year which is more than 'double the previous biggest year-over-year gain for a major sports league.' The teams are collectively worth $3.5 billion and on average, each franchise is worth $269 million, vastly more than the $96 million the average team was worth in 2024. The previous biggest year gain was seen in the NBA in 2014 after Steve Ballmer bought the Los Angeles Clippers. TV ratings, merchandise sales, attendance and revenue increases over the last 12 months have led to the explosion of valuation for WNBA teams, per Sportico.

Detroit to return as WBNA franchise city in 2029

Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia have been named the next three cities to get expansion teams in the WNBA. Detroit's first year of play is expected to be in 2029, according to the announcement. The women's team will play in Little Ceasars Arena, home of the NBA's Detroit Pistons. A new practice facility will be built. The majority ownership is Tom Gores, who owns the Pistons. Minority owners will be Grant Hill, Chris Webber and Jared Goff. He formally submitted a bid on behalf of an expansion ownership group in January. "I think this will be bigger than just the basketball team coming back. It's recognition of all the things that are happening in the city. And finally, I think it's going to have a real economic impact," Pistons vice chairman Arn Tellem said. Detroit was first awarded a WNBA franchise in 1996. The Detroit Shock played in Auburn Hills from 1998 to 2009, with the team moving to Tulsa and then Dallas. "Detroit is a sports town that loves its teams deeply and consistently shows up with unwavering passion," Gores said when the plans were announced. "At a critical moment in the growth and development of the WNBA, it supported the hometown team more than any other franchise in the league. We're here to rekindle that legacy." Cleveland will start playing in the league in 2028 at Rocket Arena, home of the Cavaliers. The majority ownership is with Dan Gilbert, who owns the Cavaliers. Cleveland also is a former home city for the WNBA. Philadelphia will start playing in the league in 2030 in a new arena in downtown Philadelphia. The majority ownership is with Josh Harris, who owns the Philadelphia 76ers. That city has not previously hosted a WNBA team. contributed to this report.
