Gutted BBC fans complain ‘I can't believe it's the last one!' as beloved series wraps with final episode - and won't return for an entire year
Presented by Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan, Springwatch usually airs on BBC Two at 8pm from Monday to Thursday.
The latest series began on May 26 and has been gripping viewers with updates on the wildlife at National Trust 's Longshaw Estate in the Peak District.
However, Thursday's instalment of the longstanding programme saw the season come to a close.
Michaela opened up the live show and said: 'Hello and welcome to Springwatch.'

Chris then appeared on camera and joked if he had let Michaela present alone 'it would just be fluffy owlets'.
He said: 'Hello, yes, we're live at the Longshaw Estate here by the National Trust, in the Peak District National Park for the very last time because this is the end.'
'Well, it's not the end of everything, it's merely the end of our series and we're going out with a bang because tonight we're bringing you a new nest, a dinosaur nest, not live, obviously,' Chris went on.
'As Chris said, it is our last night of the series, it always goes so quickly doesn't it, and we will be celebrating the cast that is still remaining because obviously a lot of them have already fledged,' Michaela added.
Some fans were devastated that the series was over and took to social media to express their dismay.
One posted on X: 'Thank you #Springwatch it's been fantastic! Missing you already… Hurry back. Looking forward to #Winterwatch now.'
'Another fantastic series. #Springwatch is the epitome of relaxing, watchable telly that's engaging and informative. Shame it has to come to an end.'
'As the titles rolled, I stood and applauded and shed a little tear. I've already bought a animal cam and will be building a pond. Thanks team.'
However, Thursday's instalment of the long-standing programme saw the season come to a close. Some fans were devastated that the series was over and took to social media to express their dismay
'I'm always quite sad when #Springwatch finishes for another year… Bring back #AutumnWatch #BBC.'
'Those 3 weeks of #springwatch passed far too fast! Can't believe I didn't make it over to @nationaltrust Longshaw whilst the team were there.'
'I cant believe it's the last one already #springwatch.'
The latest series has seen plenty of dramatic wildlife scenes that have left viewers shocked.
One instalment of the popular nature programme saw the co-presenters look at footage of a tawny owl and songthrushes, before things took a turn for the worse.
Chris recalled how on May 28, the songthrush chicks were doing well and had grown a lot over the course of a week.
One of them decided to leave the nest while others stayed behind, which Chris described as a 'big mistake'.
'A little later on, we saw our tawny owl bringing a bird in to Spud, and when Spud jumps down into the box, you can see it's not just the bird, it is a fledgling songthrush,' he explained.
Chris added that there was 'no proof' that the bird was the same that had just left the nest.
Chris recalled how on May 28, the songthrush chicks were doing well and had grown a lot over the course of a week
'But what happened next at 11.06pm was the tawny owl returned and obviously it would come to this nest and grab those chicks,' he went on.
'Very rapidly it killed the chicks in the nest using its talons and then took hold of one of them and make its way out of the back of the nest.'
The presenter clarified again: 'Like I say, no proof that this is Spud's parent of any kind. It could be another tawny owl, however I can tell you that these two nests are 250m apart so it's getting increasingly likely.'
However, the scenes proved to be upsetting to some viewers who took to social media to share their thoughts.

Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt's cryptic eight-word reply to MasterChef claims
Matt has been a regular presenter on the BBC show since taking over from James Martin in 2016 and has reportedly 'held talks' about presenting MasterChef When questioned about potentially taking over as the presenter of MasterChef, Matt Tebutt offered a somewhat cryptic response, sparking further speculation. This comes after Gregg Wallace, aged 60, was reportedly let go by the BBC amid misconduct allegations. Gregg initially stepped down from hosting duties in November. It led to food critic Grace Dent stepping in to co-host the latest series of Celebrity MasterChef alongside John Torode. Grace recently told Loose Women that presenting the show had been her "dream job ever since she was a little girl". She explained: "I've had my eye on the prize wanting it but you never think that you're going to get chosen. "When I felt that there might be some movement, and there might be a role, I wanted it and wanted it, and I put the feelers out but I wasn't going to believe it until I was standing there smiling at scallops with the dress on, with the bra on. It's a dream come true, I'm so happy." However, despite Grace's temporary takeover, there has been ongoing speculation about the long-term host. It has been reported that Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebutt has had discussions about potentially taking on the role, reports Gloucestershire Live. Matt has been a staple on MasterChef since taking over from James Martin in 2016, but hinted on the Grilled by The Staff Canteen podcast that change may be on the horizon, stating: "It's going to stop at some point. I'm going to have to do something." In March, sources whispered to The Sun that MasterChef insiders were eager for Matt to take the reins and "make it his own," revealing that he was in negotiations to co-present the show with John. The insider revealed: "Matt rose to the challenge of coming into Saturday Kitchen after it was previously hosted by another big name in the world of food, James Martin. "He managed the feat of making it his own and almost making viewers forget who his predecessor was - now Beeb bosses, and the show producers Banijay, will be hoping he can work the same magic on MasterChef." When quizzed about the potential gig, 51-year-old Matt played it cool. In an exchange with Muddy Stilettos, he remarked: "Well, there's always rumours, but it would be a great gig for sure!". Having honed his culinary skills at Leiths School of Food and Wine in London, Matt went on to add flavour to some top-notch restaurants. His journey into television started when he substituted for James Martin on Saturday Kitchen. Beyond this, Matt has helmed shows such as Channel 4's Food Unwrapped and joined forces with Tom Parker-Bowles and Matthew Fort on Market Kitchen. His gastronomy achievements include running the Foxhunter restaurant in Wales for a decade and a half, which he now leases out. Tune in to catch Matt back on Saturday Kitchen from 10am today on BBC One, where he'll cook alongside Ran Shmueli, Richard Bainbridge, and Crystelle Pereira. Guesting in the studio will be songstress Vanessa Williams, while Helen McGinn selects the week's perfect wine pairings. Plus, viewers will get to savour nostalgic culinary clips from the BBC's storied foodie archives.

Wimbledon presenter Clare Balding says 'I can't be the guilty one' after making big dog sacrifice
Wimbledon presenter Clare Balding says 'I can't be the guilty one' after making big dog sacrifice The 54-year-old sport presenter says she and her wife Alice were considering a new family addition last summer, but felt as though the time wasn't right Clare Balding made a big decision with wife Alice Arnold Clare Balding candidly shared, "I can't be the guilty one" as she spoke about a poignant choice she and her wife Alice Arnold had to make. The renowned Wimbledon commentator first crossed paths with Alice in 1999 while both were at the BBC. The duo solidified their bond with a civil partnership in 2006 and tied the knot in a discreet ceremony 10 years on. In 2020 the loved-up couple faced heartbreak when their beloved Tibetan terrier Archie died. Clare has confessed that living without a canine companion is "killing" her. Yet, during her appearance at the Good Woof festival last year, she recognised that it wasn't the opportune moment to introduce a new dog into their home. This was due to the couple's commitment to a significant house move project. Additionally, Clare was preparing for a summer away, covering the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. The 54-year-old broadcaster explained: "Here's the thing about responsible dog ownership, I'm going to be away all this summer doing the Olympics and Paralympics, this is not the time to bring a dog into my life, our life." Article continues below "We're doing a big housebuilding project so that we can move somewhere where we have a bit more space, we're not close to a road, we can have doors open all the time, so as and when we get a dog again, having had Archie for 15-and-a-half-years, so when we do it again we can do it right. And it's killing me not to have a dog right now, but I know it's the right thing to wait." Clare jestingly confessed the Good Woof festival presented a tempting opportunity as she quipped: "I have seen a lot of dogs today though that I would quite happily scoop up and take away while the owners are not watching, which as the presenter of a programme called Lost Dog, Found Dog, I don't think I should do. I can't be the one guilty of the crime." In an insightful segment on her show, Lost Dog, Found Dog, Clare talked to a pet bereavement counsellor who provided advice on the right time to consider another dog post bereavement. The expert's words were clear: "It's different for everyone, but the most important thing is, it's what's best for the animal you do get." Clare Balding is leading the Wimbledon coverage for the BBC this year (Image: BBC ) Emphasising the importance of acknowledging each dog's individuality, Clare underlined why new pets should not simply serve as replacements. She shared her views stating: "And what we often hear is that people try and replace [the dog] with the same breed, the same name, please don't because every dog is unique and has its own character." Previously, when appearing on Good Morning Britain , Clare revealed she and Alice were edging closer to becoming dog owners once more. She however stressed they were taking their time with the decision. Article continues below Clare will be leading the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon day 13 from 4pm today (July 12). This afternoon will see the ladies' singles finals.
