Shillong: The district administrations of
West Jaintia Hills
and
East Khasi Hills
imposed a night curfew, along the
India-Bangladesh border
, on Thursday because of the current situation in the neighbouring country, which includes a likelihood of cross-border movement by 'unwanted elements' such as people, members of proscribed militant groups, smugglers, and other illegal activities.
"Whereas, the bordering area in West Jaintia Hills district being unfenced is highly prone to infiltration by illegal migrants, members of organised crime having linkage to anti-national elements, including militant groups such that the anti-national elements, could gather in large numbers near the International Border during the night hours to continue their nefarious activities," an official order said.Stating that such 'illegal, undesirable activities' should be prevented to maintain peace and tranquillity in the district, state and the country, West Jaintia Hills district magistrate Abhinav Kumar Singh announced the imposition of a curfew from 8pm to 6am extending up to 200 metres from the Zero Line (International Border). In a similar order, East Khasi Hills district magistrate RM Kurbah also said the bordering areas in the district being unfenced are highly prone to infiltration. The orders prohibit movement of people intending to cross the International Border with Bangladesh or sneak into the Indian territory, unauthorised processions or unlawful assembly of five or more persons, and carrying of arms or other instruments which can be used as weapons — including sticks and stones — in and around the India-Bangladesh border. The order also bans illegal, undesirable activities, smuggling of cattle or contraband goods, betel nut, betel leaves, dry fish, biri, cigarettes and tea leaves. In view of the urgency of the matter, the order was passed ex-parte and came into force with immediate effect and until further orders. In her order, Kurbah specified that the night curfew would be effective in 1km radius of the International Border for two months from Thursday. On the other hand, the state govt has directed the deputy commissioners of Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions to immediately resolve the land issue for speeding up the completion of
border fencing
along the India-Bangladesh border. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by deputy CM in-charge home (police) Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday in presence of BSF Meghalaya inspector general and NBCC officials. Tynsong said due to the problem of land acquisition, about 33km-34km along the India-Bangladesh border in West Jaintia Hills is unfenced and around 7km-8km is unfenced in the East Khasi Hills district. "We have instructed that no person should illegally bring Bangladeshis into India until they have all necessary documents.
That is the standing order and we continue to make sure it should not happen," he said.

Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha to resume today following clash over Operation Sindoor

Parliament Session Live Updates: The Monsoon Session of Parliament will resume on Wednesday at 11am in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, a day after proceedings were adjourned following a charged debate on Operation Sindoor — India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Tuesday's session witnessed intense political back-and-forth, with sharp exchanges between the ruling party and the opposition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address, praised the Armed Forces for their swift and decisive action. Calling it 'the new normal,' he said India would no longer tolerate cross-border terrorism. He also stressed that India acted independently, without external pressure, stating, 'Told US Vice President that if Pakistan attacks India, our attack would be much bigger as we will respond to bullets with cannons.' Modi made it clear that no world leader had asked India to stop its military operation, underscoring the government's firm stance on national security. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, however, accused the government of holding back the Armed Forces. He claimed the loss of Indian aircraft during the operation was a result of political restrictions placed on the military. 'The aircraft were lost because of constraints given by the political leadership to not attack the military and air defence infrastructure of Pakistan,' he said. Gandhi further alleged that Pakistan was pre-informed that its military infrastructure would not be targeted.

Kids lose parents in Pak shelling: Rahul Gandhi to sponsor education of 22 children

Rajouri/Jammu: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will sponsor the education of 22 children who lost either one or both parents in the Pakistani shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Sindoor, a party leader has said. Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra also refuted any differences with the pre-poll alliance partner National Conference (NC) but said his party is waiting for formation of coordination committee with the ruling party for the past nine months. 'A lot of civilian casualties and damage to properties took place in Poonch and Rajouri (between May 7 and 10) in Pakistani shelling. Rahul Gandhi visited Poonch in the aftermath of the devastating shelling and visited the bereaved families. He asked us to prepare a list of school-going children who lost one or both parents, especially the breadwinners, and accordingly we submitted the list to him,' Karra, who reached Rajouri on a three-day tour of the region, told reporters late Monday. He said the party has a list of 22 such children in the Poonch district alone, and more such children might be included at the end of the three-day visit. Poonch district alone accounted for 13 civilian deaths among 28 fatalities in the Pakistani shelling and drone attacks in Jammu and Kashmir after the Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes on terror infrastructure across the border under Operation Sindoor in May in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 persons, mostly tourists, dead.

‘It could have been done in a much better way, it was totally wrong': Haryana Congress leaders on Gurgaon police's ‘foreigners verification' drive

Senior Haryana Congress leader Aftab Ahmed said Tuesday the Gurgaon police's crackdown last week on suspected foreigners in the city reeked of 'sheer discrimination and a lack of basic thinking'. Hundreds of men were rounded up by the Gurgaon police as part of a 'routine verification' drive to identify Bangladeshis and Rohingya living illegally in the city. The move sparked panic among the Bengali-speaking migrant community, prompting many to leave the city. Speaking with the Indian Express, the Nuh MLA said, 'If someone speaks Bengali or Assamese, it doesn't mean they are a foreign national, Bangladeshi or Rohingya'. 'There are ways to verify, but not like this. Putting them in holding centres, allegedly torturing and putting them up there for days. These are poor people doing odd jobs that no one else will do. It could have been done in a much better way; it was totally wrong. They have documents. The way they have been questioning, allegedly beating, and humiliating them, saying they're with Mamata (Banerjee), is …' Ahmed said he has been raising the issue with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Shatrujeet Kapur, Director General of Police. Also Read | Domestic help, labourers: Bengali-speaking migrant workers pack up, leave Gurgaon after police verification scare 'They are poor who, for their daily bread, are willing to work in unhygienic conditions, and still you mete out such treatment by relying on some Union Home Ministry order. That is not what it said; you verify, but not like this. We will keep opposing it tooth and nail if it continues as well.' Ultimately, it was being done at the government's behest, he stressed. 'Atmosphere of fear' Haryana Congress leader Pearl Choudhary, who contested the 2024 Assembly elections from Pataudi, said the Gurgaon police's move seemed illegal and invalid, and questioned its timing. 'We have to see the timing, the Bihar elections are coming, I think it is very connected to the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) exercise,' said Choudhary. 'Bengali-speaking Muslims are being targeted in the context of the Bihar polls and even West Bengal next year. It is election-driven. It has led to an atmosphere of fear.' Choudhary said the migrant workers have all documents, and this is not the right time for the drive. When asked about the lack of visibility of Haryana Congress leaders on the ground for the issue, she said they have been acting for the workers' interests away from the media glare. Without informing the media, we are acting, and even many from the All India Professionals' Congress have been roped in for legal and other assistance. The media does not tend to give us space, but we are doing whatever we can do.' Gurgaon police on verification drive The Gurgaon police have refuted allegations of violence or torture on their part, saying due process was maintained and no particular religion was being targeted in their check for illegal foreigners. Last Saturday, the police said they would round up only 'confirmed foreign nationals' as part of their verification drive, as they shut four holding facilities that housed suspected foreigners on Friday. The four facilities were at community centres in Badshahpur, Sector 10A, Sector 40, and Sector 1 in Manesar. 'We had completed verification and checking of the suspected foreigners, hence the move. Even earlier, only those who were strong suspects based on missing or discrepancies in documents, or for example Bangladeshi numbers found on their phone or their WhatsApp being deleted, were taken to the holding centres,' a police spokesperson said. Earlier, Gurgaon MLA and BJP leader Mukesh Sharma supported the verification drive. 'The Rohingya have negatively affected the law and order situation in Gurgaon, we all know. They set up jhuggis (here) and their numbers increase… they have a system to get documents made.' Asked about domestic help who are genuine citizens belonging to West Bengal being picked up, he said, 'See, as directions have come from the (Union) government, we have to support the drive. The government and police are working based on their intel. Let the checking be thorough.'
