Is ‘S.W.A.T.' Renewed for Season 9? Inside the Show's Future After It Was Canceled 3 Times
CBS called it quits on the action series for the third time in March 2025, a few weeks ahead of season 8's finale.
'It's heartbreaking news, primarily because it's been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we've always been proud of,' showrunner and executive producer Andrew Dettmann said in a statement at the time. 'They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can't give them enough credit.'
Shemar Moore, who played Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson, also shared a video discussing the news on Instagram.
'I wasn't going to do this, but I can't help it,' he said. 'S.W.A.T., here we are, season 8, three weeks away from the finale. We are canceled again. It sucks. It's sad.'
While many fans were holding out hope that CBS would reverse its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., as it did ahead of seasons 7 and 8, this did not happen after the third cancellation. However, Sony Pictures TV Studios prexy Katherine Pope said that the creators did attempt to sell the show to other networks.
'It felt very clear from CBS that this was the end,' she explained to Variety on May 22, 2025. 'It was a difficult decision for them, but it felt very final. So we set out to sell the show elsewhere. We tried really hard, and we felt like we got close at a place or two, but we just couldn't quite get it over the line.'
Though S.W.A.T. was not renewed for season 9 at CBS or another network, fans will still get to watch the beloved series in another form.
A S.W.A.T. spinoff series called S.W.A.T. Exiles was announced shortly after the series finale. Shemar is set to reprise his role as Hondo.
'After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Hondo is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits,' the logline reads. 'Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.'
S.W.A.T. Exiles will have 10 episodes, although it does not yet have a home on any network or streaming service as of publication. Katherine told Variety that the series plans to begin production in August 2025.

Jimmy Kimmel erects L.A. billboard endorsing 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' for Emmy instead of his own show
The move comes two weeks after Colbert's CBS show was canceled. Jimmy Kimmel is telling everyone that he wants Stephen Colbert's Late Show to win an Emmy this year, even though his own Jimmy Kimmel Live is also nominated for the same award. The comedian has rented a billboard, at the intersection of La Cienega and Santa Monica boulevards in West Hollywood, on which he declares, "I'm voting for Stephen." The nominees in the category of Outstanding Talk Series this year are Colbert, Kimmel, and The Daily Show on Comedy Central. Though Colbert's show has been nominated for 33 Emmys in all, across various categories, since 2017, it's never won. EW has reached out to reps for Colbert and Kimmel for comment. Kimmel's show of support comes two weeks after Colbert announced on-air that CBS' Late Show franchise, which David Letterman began in 1993, will end next year. The network said its decision to pull the plug on the franchise was "purely a financial one" and that it wasn't "related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount." It continued, "We are proud that Stephen called CBS home," officials said in a statement. "He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television." Critics, however, have called out the timing of the announcement, which came in the same month that Paramount Global, the parent company of Colbert's network, agreed to pay $16 million to President Donald Trump over an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris that aired on 60 Minutes in November. Trump has long disliked late-night hosts' jokes about his administration and, since the cancellation, has said that he's hearing "a strong word" that Kimmel will be canceled next, then The Tonight Show's Jimmy Trump has denied that he was behind the decision to end Colbert. "Everybody is saying that I was solely responsible for the firing of Stephen Colbert from CBS, 'Late Night" he wrote on social media. "That is not true! The reason he was fired was a pure lack of TALENT, and the fact that this deficiency was costing CBS $50 Million Dollars a year in losses — And it was only going to get WORSE!" At the same time, Kimmel and The Daily Show's Jon Stewart are among those who have come to Colbert's defense, with their words and even cameos on his show. ‘Blue Bloods' Alum Responds to ‘Boston Blue' Spinoff Backlash
'Blue Bloods' Alum Responds to 'Boston Blue' Spinoff Backlash originally appeared on Parade. Blue Bloods alum Donnie Wahlberg defended his upcoming spinoff, Boston Blue, after fans expressed their disappointment with the series. The back-and-forth began when a Boston Blue fan account posted footage via Instagram on Tuesday, July 29, of the CBS drama filming scenes in Toronto. In the videos, Wahlberg, 55, and his costar Mika Amonsen shot the show outside of the Canadian city's St. Lawrence Market, which is rumored to be serving as the exterior of Boston's Fenway Park. In the comments section of the post, fans complained about the series substituting Toronto for Boston. 'Bring the show to Boston where it belongs!' one user wrote. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Amid the controversy, Wahlberg — who is a Boston native — assured the fan that the show planned to film in his hometown as well, replying, 'On our way next week.' A second person chimed in to share their frustration with the situation too. 'But why not film in Boston?' the social media user commented. 'Come on, CBS, Boston is incredible and this show should be filmed there!' Wahlberg subsequently doubled down on his earlier explanation, responding, 'Be there in a week with cameras and crew.' On the Blue Bloods spinoff, Wahlberg will reprise his role as former NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he relocates to work for the Boston Police Department. There, he partners up with Detective Lena Peters (Sonequa Martin-Green), who comes from a Reagan-esque law enforcement family played by Gloria Reuben, Ernie Hudson and Marcus Scribner. Wahlberg previously starred alongside Tom Selleck (Frank Reagan), Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan), Will Estes (Jamie Reagan) and Len Cariou (Henry Reagan) on Blue Bloods. The CBS drama aired for 14 seasons from 2010 to 2024, with Wahlberg serving as a series regular for the show's entire run. Boston Blue premieres on CBS Friday, October 17, at 9 p.m. ET.
