Second edition of Tale of Two Cities links Milan and Alexandria - Visual Art - Arts & Culture

Al-Ahram Weekly7 days ago
CulturVator's Art D'Égypte has launched the second edition of Tale of Two Cities, a cross-continental exhibition taking place in Milan, Italy, and Alexandria, Egypt.
Tale of Two Cities functions not only as an exhibition but also as an initiative aimed at reconnecting various Mediterranean cities with Alexandria through art, history, and human dialogue.
The initiative's first edition, held in 2024, was hosted by Greece's Acropolis Museum and Egypt's Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It reaffirmed Alexandria's historic role as a cultural bridge and celebrated the exchange between the two nations.
This 'curatorial pairing' featured Greek artists such as sculptor Costas Varotsos (born 1955) and visual artist Danae Stratou (born 1964), alongside their Egyptian counterparts, including the late painter Mahmoud Said (1897–1964), Alexandrian sculptors Omar Touson (born 1972) and Said Badr (born 1965), and Cairo-born interior architect and photographer Karim El-Hayawan.
The second edition of Tale of Two Cities runs from 30 June to 31 July 2025 at Galleria Fumagalli in Milan, where it is co-curated by Art D'Égypte and Maria Vittoria Baravelli.
Inspired by the ancient Milan Papyrus—one of the oldest known documents of poetry, discovered in 2001—and structured around three poetic fragments from the text, the Milan segment of the exhibition offers a lens through which artists contemplate the transience of cities and the enduring power of art.
Contemporary Egyptian and Italian artists and designers engage with the papyrus's poetic themes in innovative and multidimensional ways. Participants include Jamal Bassiouni, Hassan Ragab, Ahmed Farid, Luca Boffi, Giacomo Cossio, Clarulecis, and Luigi Pensa.
The exhibition also features designers from the Designer Circle by Art D'Égypte, including Kahhal 1871, Ahmad Elsherif, and Shewekar, whose projects reinterpret heritage and materiality within the context of contemporary design.
In addition, a segment of this year's Tale of Two Cities will be presented at the MA*GA Art Museum in Gallarate—a city in the Milan metropolitan area—on 1 and 2 July.
Titled Geography and Mystery, the MA*GA showcase presents Italian photography that explores identity and the spirit of place. These works go beyond documentation, offering meditations on the unknown and the hidden within nature and human history.
Following its time in Italy, the exhibition will travel to Egypt, where works by artists from both countries will be displayed at several venues in Alexandria in October and November 2025.

Bayou & Tawsen Link Up on Summer R&B Anthem ‘Kayani'

Egyptian-Saudi artist Bayou returns with 'Kayani', an R&B track featuring Tawsen. The single drops alongside a coastal video and kicks off Bayou's five-city summer tour. Jul 07, 2025 Fresh off the viral success of 'Ya Zeina', Bayou drops 'Kayani' , a breezy Arabic R&B single featuring rising Moroccan artist Tawsen. Produced by Jean Bleu (who has worked with Drake and Marwan Pablo) with additional touches by Grammy-winning producer Motif Alumni (Doja Cat, Don Toliver), 'Kayani' is tailored for summer: smooth, rhythmic, and flirtatiously light on its feet. Opening with the line 'ليلي ونهاري بتمشى لأخر افكاري' ('Day and night, I walk all the way to the edge of my thoughts'), Bayou leans into a melodic coolness that's quickly becoming his signature. Tawsen, known for his genre-blurring French-Arabic delivery, blends seamlessly into the track's sun-drenched tempo. Shot on Egypt's North Coast, the music video pulls inspiration from early-2000s reggaeton with sunlit scenes, loose choreography, and subtle surrealism. The release also marks the start of Bayou's summer tour, hitting Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Jeddah, and Riyadh between July 8th and the 18th.

Cairo Marriott is Turning Staycations Into a Status Move This Summer

This summer, Cairo Marriott offers Cairenes a palace staycation with pools, shaded gardens, a spa, and 14 dining spots, a city escape without leaving the city. Jul 07, 2025 There are staycations, and then there's summer at Cairo Marriott Hotel, where you check into an actual 19th-century palace and immediately find yourself debating whether the pool or the spa should come first. This season, the property leans into its urban-palatial credentials with a limited summer offer. For families, the experience is designed to accommodate every age: children have a dedicated play corner to get creative, while adults are left to choose between spa treatments, garden strolls, or riverside cocktails. Daily pop-ups, live performances, and rotating in-house activations keep the atmosphere lively without overwhelming the calm. Dining, of course, is a chapter of its own. With 14 restaurants ranging from Italian at Ristorante Tuscany and French with Saraya Gallery, to Japanese restaurant Torii and Oriental dishes at Egyptian Nights, every taste is accounted for. Whether it's steak at JW Steakhouse, mezze under the stars at Garden Promenade Café, pastries, or simply a poolside snack from Waves, the culinary circuit reflects the hotel's urban-palatial ethos: indulgent and staying at the hotel also have the rare chance to take a private tour of the 150-year-old palace, with access to its lesser-seen halls and historical corridors. From now until August 31st, the Cairo Marriott invites you to escape without leaving the city. The summer staycation package starts at EGP 7,500 per night for a deluxe double room, inclusive of service charges, taxes, daily breakfast, and parking.
