Outlander dress goes on show in village where series filmed
The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) is celebrating the link by putting a dress worn by the character Geillis Duncan on show at Culross Palace, one of the properties in its care.
Visitors can see the dress by Terry Dresbach – the costume designer for series one to four – with its accompanying white under garment, corset, and underskirt.
Anna Rathband, NTS filming manager, said: 'We've had a great relationship with the production of Outlander for more than a decade.
'Six out of its eight seasons filmed at Trust places, including Culross Palace, Falkland Palace, the Hermitage, Newhailes, and Preston Mill.
'Hundreds, if not thousands, of Outlander fans have already come from across the world to engage with the story and to learn more about the history of our country.
'We're excited to bring a piece of Outlander to Culross Palace and make Geillis's dress available for the public to see up close.
'Many fans of the series will recognise Culross as the fictional village of Cranesmuir in seasons one and two, and the village, Culross Palace, and the palace's garden have featured in a variety of scenes throughout the series, so it will give them a chance to stand in the Outlander world and connect with a piece of its history.'
Geillis Duncan was a real person who was accused by magistrate David Seton of witchcraft in 1590.
Her forced confession is said to have fuelled witchcraft accusations in Scotland, contributing to the North Berwick witch trials and accusations against more than 60 people.
The character Geillis, played by Lotte Verbeek, is first seen in season one of Outlander.
In the Outlander series, inspired by Diana Gabaldon's books, Geillis first appears in 1743 and befriends the main character, Claire Randall.
Eventually, Geillis is tried and executed for witchcraft, revealing her real name is Gillian Edgars, a Jacobite who deliberately returned to Scotland before the 1745 uprising to try and change the course of history.
The dress is on show from Wednesday until autumn 2026 and viewing it is included with admission to Culross Palace and garden.

Castle with gardens inspired by world-renowned artists
A specially curated exhibition of the works of the internationally-acclaimed print maker, who is native to the North East of Scotland, recently opened at the Castle and, inspired by one of Furneaux's abstract works, Daguin has created a striking new planting scheme that has transformed part of Drum's historic walled garden. Together, they offer a dynamic visual echo of Furneaux's work and a contemporary counterpoint to the garden's more traditional sections, which include an old wood of ancient trees, a garden of historic roses and a play park made from natural materials, where young visitors can run off steam. The Irvine family, owners of Drum Castle for over 650 years until the National Trust for Scotland took over its care, were significant patrons of the arts and the permanent collection boasts works by Van Dyck and Raeburn, alongside pieces by established family artists Hugh [[Irvine]] and Anna Margaretta Forbes [[Irvine]]. Another National Trust for Scotland property which has strong links to the world of art is Kellie Castle in Fife, where the garden of the 500-year old property was revived by renowned Scottish architect Robert Lorimer and then by his son, the sculptor Hew Mortimer. They also turned a former archery court into a sheltered space for growing peaches, filled the bee boles set into the walls with wicker skeps and allowed hens to roam free amongst the flowerbeds. Their aim was to recreate a traditional Scottish 'pleasaunce', a medieval, enclosed garden set hard against the castle, in contrast to the fashion in later centuries for setting walled gardens at some distance from the main house. Major ITV drama with Hollywood star cancelled after just one series
Hollywood actress Sophie Turner starred in the title role of Joan for ITV but despite high ratings, it has been cancelled by the broadcaster after just one series. ITV's hit drama Joan has been axed after just one series. The gritty true crime drama featured former Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner in the leading role of accomplished jewel thief Joan Hannington, a single mother who has turned to a life of crime to provide for her daughter, and drew in four million viewers for the broadcaster. Despite its success, it has now been confirmed that no more episodes will be produced thanks to an scheduling issues with its leading star. A spokesperson said: "ITV and Snowed-In Productions would love to produce another series of Joan. However, as a consequence of cast availability and following co-production discussions it has meant a second series wasn't possible.' Prior to this announcement, Richard Laxton previously claimed that there was 'definitely potential' for the series to continue, although things have now changed. There had been attempts to bring Joan's story to the screen before, with A-listers Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow both having been tied to projects that never came to fruition. Sophie, who divorced former Disney Channel star Joe Jonas last year after five years of marriage and is now dating Peregrine Pearson, will soon be seen in the upcoming thriller Trust and has also been filming the leading role in the Amazon Prime series Steal It's also thought that she will be taking on the role of video game heroine Lara Croft in a Tomb Raider TV series, nearly 25 years after Angelina Jolie first brought the part to the big screen. After an extensive promotional campaign, ITV finally aired the much-anticipated first episode of Joan in September last year and told the story over a period of six episodes. In the first instalment, viewers met Joan juggling motherhood to her daughter Kelly, boogieing to Bucks Fizz in the kitchen, and strutting off to work at a local club. But tensions soared when she returned home to find her husband Gary (Nick Blood) missing. He reappeared with daylight, and dropped a bombshell about his need to vanish due to dangerous pursuits. The stakes were raised to heart-stopping heights when Joan stared down the barrel of a gun, held by thugs in her own home. The reality hit hard, and she resolves to ditch Gary, entrusting her daughter to foster care while she scrambles for their next move. At the time, the actress explained how she had found herself drawn to the project, stating: "There was so much about the show that appealed. First of all, it was a story about a real woman. Joan had an obscene appetite for adventure and doing new things. I was drawn as well to the way she could compartmentalise her life." Turner also had the opportunity to meet the real-life Joan Hannington, describing their encounter as deeply emotional. "The moment Joan walked in, she burst into tears. We hadn't even said anything. She just said, 'It's perfect.' I think Frank [Dillane] cried, too. It was just a very, very emotional meeting. I learned such a lot from her. I learnt about her bravado, the way she owned the room as she walked into it it was like she had the world wrapped around her little finger." When the programme finally made it to air, it drew millions of viewers and won praise from fans across social media, with one writing: "I hope this production and all the actors and actresses inside, win some awards, they did such a good job. Even more impressive and touching when you remember that everything you're seeing really happened. It's very gripping. A second viewer said: "This drama is fabulous, loving the story and the 80's vibe." Another viewer was spot on board, tweeting: "I'm loving the 80's music on this programme tonight. Capturing the nostalgia, another chimed in: "Joan. Omg it's taking me right back to the 80s my era. I love it. Music. Clothes. Sony Walkman headphones... smokin' in clubs." Now a new weekend bus service is being introduced to encourage more of the 600,000 annual visitors to Glenfinnan to leave their cars behind and travel a little more magically. And the bus line has a name inspired by the books, being called no. 9 ¾ - or 934. This is in a nod to Platform 9¾, the magical place Harry and his pals caught the Hogwarts Express when heading for school. According to those behind the bus journey, the service offers a 'spellbinding alternative to driving' with comfy seats and scenic views. The new timetable is part of a community-led effort aimed at helping plug a gap in public transport provision to the tiny village on the shores of Loch Shiel in Lochaber on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a pilot scheme to gauge public appetite for a motor-free day out and help relieve pressure on local car parks, which quickly fill up at this time of year, leading to hazardous kerbside parking and traffic congestion along the famous road to the Isles. The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), Glenfinnan Community Council, Glenfinnan Community Facilities Charitable Trust (SCIO), Glenfinnan Station Museum and HITRANS have each contributed to the cost of the buses. Local authority councillors have also backed the project by supporting an application to The Highland Council's Discretionary Budget, while local bus company, Shiel Buses, will operate the service. Glenfinnan businesses are also offering 'green rewards' as a thank you to those visitors who show them a valid bus or train ticket. This has created pressures on local infrastructure, which I have been working to resolve with local residents. 'A few years ago, the community successfully built a much larger car park. However, this has quickly become too small. As such, I have been chairing a task force to identify solutions over the last few years. HOW TO GET THERE THE summer weekend bus service will run four times a day at the weekends, between Fort William and Glenfinnan, from now until September 7. It is just one of many train and bus services that travel to Glenfinnan seven days a week. Visitors will be able to get on the Glenfinnan weekend bus at Fort William bus station, Lochaber High School (free parking available at weekends), Kilmallie Hall in Corpach and Linnhe Caravan Park.
