KL court fines IT executive RM20,000 for cheating salesman of three Rolex watches worth over RM140,000
Harian Metro reported that Wu Zhiwei, 27, pleaded guilty to an alternative charge read to him in Mandarin before Judge Azrul Darus.
The court ordered that the Chinese national be jailed for 12 months if he fails to pay the fine.
According to the charge, Wu deceived a 25-year-old watch salesman during the sale and purchase of three Rolex watches, prompting the victim to hand over two Rolex Datejust 41 models and a Black Submariner worth RM146,657.
The offence was committed at a restaurant on Jalan Khoo Teik Ee, Dang Wangi, between June 4 and 16.
He was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

PUTRAJAYA, July 31 — The government today announced the restructuring of chicken egg subsidies, to take effect tomorrow (August 1), as part of a phased and targeted subsidy approach aimed at greater sustainability and higher impact. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), in a statement today, said the move is in line with efforts to ensure supply security and price stability for chicken eggs. As part of this initiative, it said, the industry has agreed to introduce Special Grade Eggs which will be offered at more affordable prices. It said the public can continue to purchase chicken eggs at competitive prices through the Agro Madani Sale and Rahmah Sale programmes, which are being widely implemented nationwide at sales locations managed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Farmers' Organisations Authority (LPP). According to KPKM, the government spent nearly RM2.5 billion to subsidise chicken egg prices between February 2022 and December 2024. 'It is a huge amount and temporary in nature to assist both the public and the industry during the Covid-19 pandemic and the global supply chain crisis,' said KPKM. With the market situation now stabilising, it said, the subsidy scheme has been restructured to become more targeted and comprehensive. It said the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will also continue to strengthen enforcement through close monitoring under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 to combat any form of profiteering or price manipulation by irresponsible parties. 'This step is important to ensure that to ensure that prices charged to consumers remain reasonable and fair,' read the statement. Myanmar labourer arrested over roommate's murder in Sungai Petani
SUNGAI PETANI: Police have arrested a Myanmar man over the alleged murder of his roommate at a construction site in Bandar Utama here, following a 10-day manhunt. Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the 59-year-old suspect was nabbed during a raid at a house in Simpang Ampat, Penang, yesterday. "During the arrest, the suspect attempted to flee but was successfully apprehended. Police also seized a gold coloured mobile phone believed to belong to him," he said in a press conference at the district police headquarters today. The murder is believed to have occurred at about 11.40pm on July 20, when police received a distress call from a security guard reporting a foreign man found dead at the construction site in Bandar Utama. Initial investigations found that the victim, believed to be in his 30s, had sustained fatal injuries to the chest and abdomen. "Post-mortem findings confirmed the cause of death was stab wounds to the chest and stomach. The deceased and the suspect were roommates and both worked as labourers at the site," said Hanyan. He said an alleged misunderstanding between the two men occurred while they were intoxicated, which led to the deadly altercation. Following the incident, the suspect had fled and gone into hiding in Penang. Police launched a targeted operation across the Kuala Muda district and surrounding areas, which led to the arrest. The suspect, who is undocumented and has no prior criminal record, has been remanded for six days from July 31 to assist in investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for a term of between 30 and 40 years. If the death penalty is not imposed, the law also prescribes a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Sources: Anwar, Trump hold phone call before US tariff deadline on Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim spoke with President Donald Trump today, ahead of tomorrow's deadline for the imposition of new US tariffs on Malaysia. Sources say a deal to lower the tariff rate to a maximum of 20 per cent or as low as 15 per cent 'should be' announced by August 1, with Kuala Lumpur conceding on several issues including halal certification and the supply of rare earths, The Straits Times reported. 'The call was made earlier this morning after it was proposed by the Americans just a few hours back,' one source was quoted as saying. Malaysia is set to recognise US halal certification on several products, including pharmaceuticals, which will likely remove the need for US products to validate their halal credentials with the Malaysian Islamic Development Department. The country is also set to supply the US with rare earth elements, leveraging its deposits of more than 16 million tonnes worth an estimated RM1 trillion, though the ore is currently exported to China due to Malaysia's lack of processing technology. Washington has made the pursuit of rare earths a key component of its national security strategy, as China dominates production of the mineral used in mobile phones, power generators, and defence technology. The Anwar-Trump phone call occurred after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan on July 30 regarding the ceasefire that Kuala Lumpur facilitated between Thailand and Cambodia, following Trump's threat to halt tariff negotiations unless the two-month conflict that killed dozens was resolved.
