Marlins Extend Road Winning Streak to 11 With 12-2 Win Over Reds

Al Arabiyaa day ago
The Miami Marlins extended their franchise-record road winning streak to 11 with a 12–2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. It's the longest road winning streak in the major leagues since the Phillies won 13 straight away from home in 2023.
Eury Pérez (2–2) made his sixth start for the Marlins since returning this season from Tommy John surgery and allowed only two hits, including Matt McLain's solo homer–his 10th–in the first inning. Pérez struck out eight and didn't walk a batter.
After Nick Martinez (6–9) retired the first six batters he faced, the Marlins collected six consecutive hits off him in the third, including a two-run double by Xavier Edwards, to take a 7–1 lead. Martinez, who made his first start at Great American Ball Park since taking a no-hitter into the ninth against the Padres, allowed a career-high 10 earned runs on seven hits.
Key moment: The Marlins caught a break in the seven-run third inning when Agustín Ramírez's high-hopper went just over the head of Reds third baseman Noelvi Marte to drive home another run and keep the rally going.
Key stat: During the road winning streak, the Marlins have outscored their opponents 82–47.
Up next: Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (7–1, 2.15 ERA) will make his first start since being named to the NL All-Star team and will face Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantra (4–8, 7.01) on Wednesday.

Perez and caglianone power Royals to 4-3 win over Pirates for 3-game sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Salvador Perez homered twice, Jac Caglianone hit the longest measured homer by a Royals rookie, and Kansas City beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. Perez broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning with his longball off Isaac Mattson (2-1). He opened the scoring with a 444-foot shot to center in the second. But the most impressive homer of the game belonged to Caglianone—a 466-foot two-run drive to center in the fourth against Bailey Falter. It was the longest homer by a Royals rookie since Statcast started tracking in 2015 and the fourth-longest by any Kansas City player at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals have won six of seven overall. They did not have a multi-homer game this season before doing it Monday night against Pittsburgh, and now they've done it three games in a row. Kansas City hit nine homers in the series. Pittsburgh fell to 0-6 on its nine-game trip ahead of the All-Star break after getting shut out in three straight games at Seattle. Perez had his second multi-homer game of the season and 19th of his career, extending his franchise record. Lucas Erceg (4-2) worked a scoreless eighth, and Carlos Estevez pitched the ninth for his 25th save. KeBryan Hayes had a two-run single in the Pirates' three-run sixth. Key moment: Perez sent the first pitch of the eighth to the walkway just short of the fountains in right-center. Key stat: Kansas City swept a series at home for the first time since a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox in early May. Pirates: Begin a three-game series at Minnesota on Friday.

Guardians sweep Astros with back-to-back homers from Martínez and Ramírez

José Ramírez homered for a third straight game, Angel Martínez also went deep, and the Cleveland Guardians got a 4–2 win over the Houston Astros on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. It's the first time the Guardians, who entered the series on a 10-game skid, have won three in a row since a four-game winning streak from May 21–24. Slade Cecconi (4–4) allowed five hits and two runs with a career-best nine strikeouts in 7-plus innings for the win. Paul Sewald pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. Martínez homered for a second straight at-bat with his shot to the Crawford Boxes with one out in the first inning. His grand slam with two outs in the 10th inning Tuesday night lifted Cleveland to a 10–6 win. Four pitches after Martínez's homer Wednesday, Ramírez also connected off Brandon Walter (1–2) to make it 2–0. Walter settled in after that, retiring the next 17 batters with seven strikeouts before Bennett Sousa took over to start the seventh. Ramírez and Carlos Santana hit consecutive singles with no outs in the inning before David Fry walked to load the bases. Johnathan Rodríguez then singled to score two and extend the lead to 4–0. The Astros had managed just four singles when Taylor Trammell walked with no outs in the eighth and scored on a double by Mauricio Dubón that cut the lead to 4–1. There were two outs in the inning when Jose Altuve's RBI double made it 4–2. The AL West-leading Astros went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position to cap this disappointing series, which came after they swept the Dodgers in Los Angeles over the weekend. Key moment: Martínez and Ramírez had back-to-back homers in the first. Key stat: Ramírez, who dropped out of next week's All-Star game Wednesday to rehab a nagging Achilles injury, has four homers and seven RBIs this month. Up next: LHP Logan Allen (5–7 4.07 ERA) will start for Cleveland in the opener of a four-game series against the Chicago White Sox Thursday night. The Astros are off Thursday and haven't announced their rotation for their weekend series against the Rangers.

Wood, Lowe hrs power Washington past Cardinals 8-2 as cairo earns 1st win as nats' interim manager

James Wood hit his 24th homer, Nathaniel Lowe added a three-run shot, and the Washington Nationals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 Wednesday night to give interim manager Miguel Cairo his first victory. Cairo took over when Washington fired manager Dave Martinez and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo an hour after a 6-4 loss to Boston on Sunday. Wood hit a solo homer in the seventh inning with an exit velocity of 115.9 mph that traveled 433 feet to center field. Wood has been named an All-Star and will take part in the Home Run Derby. Lowe staked Washington to a lead in the first inning with his 14th homer of the season. The Nationals added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Alex Call and a bloop single with the bases loaded by Jacob Young that scored two runs. Amed Rosario hit a solo homer, his fifth, in the fifth inning for a 7-1 lead. MacKenzie Gore (4-8) pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven as the Nationals snapped a four-game skid. Andre Pallante (5-5) worked six innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout. Masyn Winn had three hits for the Cardinals. Key moment: Lowe's 360-foot homer in the first inning wasn't nearly as prodigious as Wood's, but it gave the Nationals all the runs they would need. Key stat: While Cairo got his first win as the Nationals' manager, it wasn't his first in the majors. Cairo was Tony La Russa's bench coach with the Chicago White Sox from 2021-22 and went 18-16 as interim manager when La Russa went on medical leave. Up next: Washington's Michael Soroka (3-6, 5.40) pitches against St. Louis' Miles Mikolas (4-6, 5.36) on Thursday.
