Eat & drink your way through Prague
You see, it's a full-circle experience with Zach McMahon, our guide for Eating Europe's Prague Food & Beer Tour.
At the start of the afternoon, as we quaff light beer paired with marinated hermelin cheese at a floating brewery called Lod Pivovar, Zach boldly declared: 'I'm going to drag you through Prague and introduce you to Czech cuisine.'

Sated and satisfied at our final stop — No. 5, at Café Louvre — Zach again piped up and smugly concluded: 'See, I told you so.'
Not that there was a lot of dragging involved.
Our group of 12 tourists were willing participants, led from stop to stop in Old Town and New Town alike, eating and drinking whatever was put in front of us as Zach kept up a running commentary.
Now, let's fill in the blanks between the floating brewery and the elegant Café Louvre. The meeting point on the Vltava River was inspired — a novel way to launch our foodie frenzy.
Lod Pivovar translated from Czech is literally 'boat brewery,' describing exactly what this beermaker-pub-restaurant-patio-events venue serves up while tethered to the right bank of the river. It's also where Zach told us 'cheers' in Czech is 'na zdravi,' which sounds like 'nice driveway' if you say it quickly with conviction and a slight mumble.
A short walk took us to Pernickuv Sen, a gingerbread bakery decorated exactly how you'd imagine an Old World gingerbread house to be.
The Czechs love gingerbread year-round, not just the frosting-coated man associated with Christmas, but other cookies, squares, treats and candy.
Zach told us there's no actual ginger in gingerbread, but a proprietary blend of other spices.
The revelation doesn't shock us.
We devour our treats and move on.

Stop No. 3 is modern quick-service eatery, Tauris in New Town, where some of us ordered Pilsner Urquell (Czechia's best selling beer and top export) and others tried the Kofola.
Kofola was communist Czechoslovakia's answer to free-market Coca-Cola — a strange replica that tastes like medicinal Dr. Pepper-meets-anise.
It's still wildly popular in Czechia and is on tap in most bars and restaurants — usually side-by-side with Pilsner Urquell.
Both drinks pair nicely with the 'chlebicek' — open-faced sandwiches — we are served.
Culinary tip: Chlebicek forgoes butter and tasks potato salad with the job of sandwich spread.

It's Kolacherie back in Old Town, specializing in 'kolace' — the traditional, round Czech pastry generally full of poppy seeds.
However, we get a contemporary version with strawberry and rhubarb, scarfing them down as we stand on the busy sidewalk, crumbles tumbling down our chins.
Before we officially arrive at the fifth and final stop, Zach runs us into the square in front of the Quadrio shopping centre to be awed by the 30-ton head of Czech writer and hero Franz Kafka.
It's massive, and the layered metal components of the sculpture by David Cerny spin in a play of movement and light.
We thought Zack took us there simply for visual delight, but alas, there's a tie-in to Café Louvre just around the corner.
As we tuck into 'svickova' — bacon fat-injected beef tenderloin in a cream sauce — paired with Czech Merlot, Zach explains Kafka was a regular at Café Louvre in the early 1900s, the height of café society.
Albert Einstein also frequented Café Louvre.
Maybe they also ordered the apple strudel we had for dessert.

Michael Douglas says he has no plans to act again
Veteran actor Michael Douglas, a two-time Oscar winner who starred in classic movies like 'Wall Street' and 'Fatal Attraction,' says he has no plans to act again unless 'something special came up.' 'I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop,' the 80-year-old told reporters on Sunday at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he was celebrating the 50th anniversary of 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest,' which he co-produced. 'I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set … I'm very happy with taking the time off. 'I have no real intentions of going back. I say I'm not retired because if something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise I'm quite happy just to watch my wife (actress Catherine Zeta-Jones) work.' Douglas still has two projects that are yet to be released – a movie, 'Looking Through Water,' and a miniseries, 'Reagan & Gorbachev,' according to IMDB. Douglas' seven-decade career spans both acting and producing. It began in 1966 when he had an uncredited role in 'Cast a Giant Shadow,' a movie packed with the biggest stars of the 60s, including his father, Kirk Douglas. His acting breakthrough came in 1972 when he appeared in the TV series 'The Streets of San Francisco,' before he picked up an Academy Award in 1976 for producing 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' He won his second Oscar, this time in the best actor category, for his portrayal of a morally bankrupt corporate raider in the 1987 movie 'Wall Street.' As he got older, Douglas has become less prolific, particularly after he was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer in 2010. 'Stage 4 cancer is not a holiday, but there's not many choices, are there?' he said on Sunday, recalling the treatment he underwent. 'I went with the program, involving chemo and radiation, and was fortunate. I had a couple of friends during that same time who were not so lucky … The surgery would have caused me not to be able to talk, as well as removing part of your jaw, and that would have been limiting as an actor.' Work imminent to create ‘more vibrancy' with green space expansion near Burt
Work to revamp an expanded Odeon Park adjacent to the Burton Cummings Theatre should start soon, with a goal to create a vibrant downtown green space. The City of Winnipeg set aside $890,000 to hire a company to redevelop the park, with work expected to begin in the late summer or early fall, city spokesman Kalen Qually said in an email. Last year, the city realigned part of Smith Street toward King Street, closing the street space immediately in front of the theatre, which aimed to improve traffic flow and create more space for Odeon Park. JOHN WOODS / FREE PRESS Those changes allow the park to grow to 970 square metres from about 335 square metres. 'The well-lit plaza will be about three times larger than the former Odeon Triangle Park, featuring a stage, seating, drinking water fountain and hard surface paving. A large sculptural feature created by a Manitoba artist will be installed, with the site bordered by tree and shrub plantings. The plaza will be available to the public in all four seasons and will be set up to complement programming at the theatre or allow separate events,' wrote Qually. Before the street was realigned, the park was confined to the Smith Street and Notre Dame Avenue rights-of-way. Mayor Scott Gillingham said the project will help add needed green space for downtown residents. 'We may not often think about the fact that the downtown is also a residential area for thousands and thousands of Winnipeggers … People in the downtown also need access to green space near their homes and businesses. So, I'm really excited about the expansion of that park,' said Gillingham. The company will also install raised concrete planter walls, benches, a concrete stage with wood decking, a concrete surface, planting beds and plants and lighting, tender documents read. City council's public works chairwoman said she expects the changes will help liven up the area around a popular theatre. 'It's going to add to neighbourhoods, it's going to add to the opportunity to create more vibrancy in our downtown. I know the theatre will be using it a lot for barbecue fests, music fests. It's going to be a great spot to activate, where people can come out and enjoy our city,' said Coun. Janice Lukes. Lukes said the density of downtown can make green space scarce, so she expects the enlarged Odeon Park will also take pressure off other options, such as Old Market Square.
