Chinese University's Job Ad Requiring PhD For Canteen Manager Role Sparks Debate

NDTV30-05-2025
A university in China has sparked controversy after posting a job advertisement for a canteen manager that requires a doctoral degree. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the listing was posted on the official website of Southeast University in Nanjing. The institution is part of government-backed initiatives and is one of only 39 universities on the mainland considered a gateway to better job prospects or further study opportunities.
The university triggered a heated online debate after the advertisement went viral. As per SCMP, the position is for an office manager overseeing the university's canteens. Responsibilities include supervising the development and preparation of dishes, managing canteen contractors, ensuring food safety, and handling administrative paperwork. Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in English and office software. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant work experience and Communist Party membership.
The expected annual salary for the position is 180,000 yuan (approximately $25,000), according to the listing.
It was the requirement of a PhD that drew intense criticism online, with many questioning whether such a high level of education is necessary for the role. "Since when does a canteen need a PhD to operate?" one social media user asked.
Some users also speculated that the position may be designed for a specific individual. "It seems too coincidental that a PhD graduate also holds a cooking certificate. It looks like the post is tailored for someone with connections," one person commented.
Following the backlash, a university staff member clarified that candidates are not required to be cooks, but preference would be given to those with academic backgrounds in food, nutrition, and culinary arts, as well as those with cooking certifications.
Notably, SCMP reported that competition for the position is expected to be fierce, as such a role at a prestigious university is viewed as a "golden rice bowl"-a stable job with excellent benefits.

IIM Udaipur to offer first-of-its-kind online bilingual BBA programme

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Udaipur is readying to launch a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), the first-of-its-kind online bilingual undergraduate programme across the IIMs. While some IIMs do offer undergraduate programmes or integrated programmes combining undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in management, IIM Udaipur 's offering seeks to open up access to the IIM brand to India's underserved learners. 'It is designed for learners who have been historically excluded: students from Hindi-medium schools, rural and small-town youth, NEET (not in education, employment or training) learners, homemakers looking to resume education, first-generation college aspirants and students from non-commerce academic backgrounds,' said Banerjee. The unique aspect of this programme is its inclusive approach to language of instruction, aligned with the National Education Policy mission that aims to promote both Indian and foreign languages in education. While the programme offers Hindi as the primary medium of instruction in the first three years, students have the choice of opting for English right from the first year. Live Events The institute is deploying artificial intelligence (AI), using AI-based voice cloning and lip-syncing to allow students to access the same content in both languages, enhancing comprehension and accelerating English proficiency, without burdening faculty with additional work. The programme is structured to offer multiple exit points: a certificate after Year 1, a diploma after Year 2, a BBA after Year 3 and a BBA (Honours) after Year 4. This flexibility has been introduced keeping in mind that many learners, especially women or those from economically weaker backgrounds, cannot always commit to a residential course. The first year of the programme focuses on 'workplace survival and entrepreneurship', laying the groundwork for income generation and micro-enterprise; while the second year develops 'MSME and operations readiness', equipping students with the tools to manage or contribute meaningfully to micro, small and medium enterprises. The third year focuses on 'strategy and leadership', deepening skills in decision-making, finance and project execution, and the fourth year prepares learners for 'global and research readiness', transitioning to full English instruction and postgraduate preparedness. The programme is mobile-first, low-bandwidth friendly and largely asynchronous. Content will be hosted on public platforms like YouTube for easy access, and assessments will be conducted at regional centres. Tuition fee for the programme starts at Rs 50,000 per year and rises to Rs 2,00,000 by the fourth year. But merit-based and need-based scholarships are offered simultaneously. A student from a low-income household who performs well could pay Rs 87,500 for the entire three-year BBA, and Rs 1.37 lakh for the four-year honours degree.

50 key traders agree to shift to SDB in fresh push

Surat: Around 50 prominenet traders have reportedly agreed to shift their operations to the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), world's largest office space, in what is seen as renewed efforts to revive the beleagured facility. The development came during a crucial meeting held on Saturday, attended by junior home minister and Majura MLA Harsh Sanghvi. Sanghvi is said to have assured traders of full govt support to address any issues that may arise during the relocation process. Various concerns delaying the shift were discussed during the meeting, and a follow-up session has been scheduled for Tuesday. Mahidharpura, a historic and densely packed diamond trading hub, has long been the heart of Surat's diamond industry. Authorities are now making concerted efforts to relocate traders from this traditional market — and from the smaller Mini Bazaar in Varachha — to the modern and expansive premises of SDB, touted as the world's largest office building. Leading diamond trader Shailesh Jogani said, "All traders present at the meeting have agreed to shift operations to SDB and begin furniture installation. We will now reach out to those who couldn't attend to get their confirmation." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do You Speak English? "We are planning the move over the next four to six months," he said. Currently, around 200 key traders have offices in Mahidharpura, with nearly 2,000 other traders operating from the area. They are now being encouraged to move to SDB with the promise of better infrastructure and govt backing. Another prominent trader, Sevanti Shah, said, "Traders from Mahidharpura have resolved to move to SDB in the coming months. Furniture work will start soon, and the SDB committee has assured full cooperation." A trader who spoke on condition of anonymity noted that previous efforts to persuade traders from Mahidharpura and Mini Bazaar to shift had little success. "But this time, Sanghvi made a strong appeal for a unified move," the trader said.

Rehabilitation centre in Chennai invites four specially abled alumni as chief guests for its 30th anniversary

The 30th anniversary celebration of Agape Rehabilitation Centre in Peravallur held on July 20 was extra special this time. The founders invited four of its 'registrants' who have excelled in their fields, as chief guests for the anniversary event. Each of them is a first beneficiary in one of the benchmark disabilities — locomotor; blindness and low vision; deaf and hard of hearing; and intellectual disability. The invitation card sent out to well-wishers had their name along with the register number and the year they got associated with the Centre. Wheelchair user Veeramallu M. joined the Centre in 1995 where he underwent training in advanced programming. Today he is a motivational speaker and assistant vice president at Intellect Design Arena Limited. Hearing impaired Kalyani B. is veterinary inspector in Vellore; Angeline Suganthi Sheeba has ID and is specialised in tailoring to run her small enterprise today; and visually challenged Ravi Joel E.G, who belongs to the 2003 batch, is an English language trainer. Each of these personalities spoke about how their journey took shape with the support and guidance offered by the Centre. Four other special achievers were also felicitated. Agape-Fred Hample Excellence Awards was presented to Venkatesh T., who works as AVP for an MNC; Pugazhendi S., who works in housekeeping in the hospitality industry; Madhan D., a team leader in Health India Medical Services; and Devikarani B. working in employment exchange office. The four were given a memento, a citation and cheque for ₹10,000. Agape was started in 1995 by couple Daniel Victor and Avitha Daniel to offer support for persons with disabilities. In the last three decades the Centre has reached support to 3,000 people through skill training; training in typewriting and computers being key factors in helping many of them get jobs including jobs in the public sector. Livelihood projects to start an enterprise, medical help including physiotherapy and support by providing wheelchairs are other ways Agape has been empowering the community. 'Today we have 10 staff and more than 20 volunteers who help us,' says Daniel, an alumnus of College of Engineering Guindy. The centre hosts monthly get-togethers, second Wednesdays for ID persons, third Sundays for LD persons and fourth Sundays for deaf persons. For details, call 8056062904 or email ableagape@
