Alarms ring in Taipei as Beijing activates another Taiwan Strait flight route

Beijing's sudden activation of
another civilian air route near the Taiwan Strait's unofficial median line has renewed alarm in Taipei, with defence experts and lawmakers warning the move could raise the risk of miscalculation in an already tense air corridor.

The mainland's Civil Aviation Administration activated the last of three branches off the M503 north-south flight path through the strait on Sunday.
The M503 and its offshoots were established in 2015 to connect various cities along the mainland's east coast. Two of the branches were activated last year and the third, the W121, on Sunday.
At its closest point, the M503 route lies just 4.2 nautical miles (7.8km) from the unofficial line dividing Taiwan and mainland China.
The administration, which made the decision without consulting Taipei, said the 'technical adjustment [was meant] to alleviate air traffic pressure and improve safety'.

'Previous changes to the route have improved the operation of cross-strait flights and further facilitated personnel exchanges across the Taiwan Strait,' the administration said.

Eric Trump to headline Bitcoin Asia 2025 as Hong Kong competes with US to be crypto hub

Eric Trump, the second-born son of US President Donald Trump, will attend next month's Bitcoin Asia 2025 conference in Hong Kong as a headline speaker, as the city strives to position itself as a leading hub for digital assets, competing with the US. Trump would discuss bitcoin's 'long-term potential' and its impact on global finance, as well as 'how Asia is shaping the future of bitcoin adoption,' said BTC Inc, the conference organiser, on Tuesday. Bitcoin Asia, the regional edition of the Bitcoin Conference – one of the world's largest cryptocurrency events – was held in Hong Kong for the first time in May last year amid the city's initiative to develop its digital asset sector. A co-founder of the bitcoin-mining venture American Bitcoin and the Trump family-backed project World Liberty Financial , Eric was 'becoming one of the industry's strongest advocates on the international stage', said BTC Inc CEO David Bailey. How can China get consumers spending? Here are 5 ideas being floated in Beijing

China has made boosting consumer spending a key policy priority in recent months, as it tries to rebalance its economy away from a reliance on exports and offset the impact of an unprecedented trade war with the United States. The country has launched a massive trade-in programme for consumer goods that has succeeded in driving up sales of everything from cars to smartphones, but there are signs that the policy is starting to lose momentum and deflationary pressure continues to affect the economy. That has led to growing calls for the government to take further action, with top Chinese economists floating a range of new policy proposals. Here are five of the ideas being discussed. Assess local officials based on their ability to boost consumption Bai Chongen, dean of the School of Economics and Management at Beijing's prestigious Tsinghua University, has suggested making consumption a key performance indicator for local governments. China's appraisal system for local cadres plays a key role in determining which officials are promoted to higher levels of government, and the system is known to shape officials' priorities while in office. If local economic growth remains the top performance metric, officials will keep prioritising investment-driven development, leading to oversupply, price instability and mounting debt pressure, Bai said in an interview with China News Service. Making consumption a key performance metric, he argued, would instead steer local governments towards a more sustainable growth model – one that fosters stable employment and strengthens consumer confidence.

Submissions should not exceed 400 words, and must include your full name and address, plus a phone number for verification With China signing a convention to set up the International Organisation for Mediation in Hong Kong, the city has an extraordinary opportunity to cement its international status amid geopolitical turmoil. As Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi suggested, the IOMed is meant to give the Global South more confidence in resolving disputes. Hong Kong has always been a top choice for commercial arbitration, and its professionalism and adaptability to international norms will provide a firm underpinning for the IOMed. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu even said the IOMed would be on par with the international courts in The Hague. Yet the success story of The Hague is built upon favourable historical developments and its proximity to other international bodies in Europe. While Hong Kong does have the corresponding networks and reputation, it would take years, if not decades, of consistent efforts to reach the same level of prominence as The Hague. Moreover, a focus on representing the Global South might mean moving away from the Eurocentric mindset, and finding a balance would require much trial and error. Ironically, Western interests must also be accommodated for the IOMed to be truly international.
