NYPD officer killed, among 5 shot in NYC shooting; gunman dead at Blackstone building

At least six people were shot Monday, and a police officer was killed when a suspected gunman unleashed a barrage of gunfire inside a midtown Manhattan office building that houses the Blackstone investment firm and the headquarters of the NFL.
Video taken by a FOX 5 NY employee showed several officers carrying a person, and other officers appeared to be tending to a person lying on the ground. The news outlet reported the number of people killed, citing law enforcement sources.
Two police officers were shot, including the one who died, sources told Fox News. The off-duty officer was working security in the building. Four other people were also killed and the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
Surveillance images captured the gunman wearing sunglasses and holding what appeared to be a rifle outside the building.

The gunman was armed with a rifle and first opened fire in the lobby of the building on 52nd Street and Park Avenue. He went to another floor and shot people there, sources told Fox News, before going up to the 33rd floor and shooting himself.

During the chaos, people inside the building were hiding on different floors, the kitchen and bathrooms.
NYPD and Sheriff's Department officers in protective gear were seen with guns drawn, Fox New York reported.
"New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now," New York City Mayor Eric Adams wrote on X. "Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street."
Officers were sweeping the building to see if a second shooter was present.
The city's emergency notification system told followers to expect traffic and mass transit disruptions.
New York attorney General Letitia James said she "praying for our law enforcement and the New Yorkers impacted in the shooting situation this evening in Manhattan."

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said that FBI New York Field Office management personnel and agents were responding to provide support at the active crime scene.
"The FBI is on scene at the Manhattan crime scene," he wrote. "The NYPD currently has the lead in this investigation. Our personnel are there to support their efforts. Motive is currently under investigation."
Jay Clayton, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has set up a command post to assist the NYPD and FBI agents at the scene, Attorney General Pam Bondi said.

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) joined Fox News on Monday to dismiss the idea of legislation aimed at preventing gun violence, just hours after a gunman killed four people in an office building in New York City's Midtown Manhattan neighborhood. Kennedy told Fox News' Sean Hannity that 'all you can do in a time like this is be sorry' for the victims of the mass shooting before predicting that some of his colleagues will call for more gun control laws on Tuesday morning. NYPD chief describes crime scene 'mayhem' as gunman killed four in Manhattan skyscraper shooting
NYPD Chief of Department John Chell has been on the force for over 30 years, but the "mayhem" from Monday's Midtown Manhattan shooting now ranks among the worst he's ever seen. "I was down there in 20 minutes as the incident commander, and… We [had] casualties in the lobby, one of our own – Officer Islam," he said Wednesday on "Fox & Friends." "We got a mom executive dead. We have a security guard who fought but lost his life. We have an NFL employee who was shot but tried to call his friends up in the NFL. We had [the perpetrator's] car in front… we thought there might be explosives in there. A 44-story building, people running out. This is not normal, and I got cops trying to negotiate, calls coming in to people trapped, a shooter up on the 33rd floor. It was just mayhem." NYPD officials were put on high alert this week when Nevada-based gunman Shane Tamura entered a Manhattan skyscraper and gunned down four people, including NYPD officer and father of two, Didarul Islam. NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said a suicide note found in Tamura's possession speaks to a possible motive, noting he blamed the NFL for his potential diagnosis and mentioned a 2013 Frontline documentary on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Though Chell went on to describe the crime scene as "horrible," he indicated the timing could have been worse. "Thank God this didn't happen a half hour earlier," he said. "There were minimal people up in Rudin Management… They had safe rooms, they practiced [for these situations]. "The first floor, the security guard who lost his life, he had the recall button for the elevators. These things happen so fast… but when [the gunman] gets to the top floor, he sees a maid who's been there for years… "She's just cleaning up, doing her job, and then… he's firing AR-15 rounds at her, and thank God she got away… and then we had the employee that was at a cubicle that lost her life – a young, rising star in that department. The crime scene, the video, in three decades of doing this, it was just horrible."
