Mark Cuban says AI could make 'just one dude in a basement' the world's first trillionaire
He said the technology, as it rapidly develops, could make "just one dude in a basement" mega-rich.
Cuban said he uses AI extensively for work and in his personal life.
The 66-year-old billionaire said in a recent episode of the "High Performance" podcast that we haven't yet seen "best, or the craziest" that AI can achieve.
"It's just the very beginning, right, you know, we're still in the preseason," Cuban said, adding that, as it becomes more advanced, we'll find more ways to make our lives better and more interesting.
"Not only do I think it'll create a trillionaire, but it could be just one dude in the basement. That's how crazy it could be," he said.
Cuban compared the push for AI to the early days of computers and smartphones. He said people hesitated to make the shift but would now struggle to live without the devices.
Someone who can come up with a way that makes AI as essential "will make a lot of money," Cuban added.
"Most people condemn things when they first happen," he said. "But then, when you see people using it and you realize the value, that's when people come around."
The former Shark Tank investor told the podcast it was "insane" how much he has been using AI.
He said that he uses AI for writing software and its text-to-video function for work. In his personal life, Cuban said he recently used ChatGPT to track his medicine and exercise habits.
"I'm not here to tell you it's going to replace everyone's job — it won't," he said, but the technology is incredible, whether you're innovative or just feeling bored.

Government researchers are applying mind function to battery making. By mimicking neural networks in human brains, National Renewable Energy Laboratory team members said they can predict battery health 1,000 times faster than standard methods, according to a news release. Common lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles and other technology include complex parts that need to operate in changing conditions. By better understanding battery cell health ASAP, the experts plan to expand pack lifetimes. It's an obvious win for EV owners and anyone else using a battery-powered device. "Battery lifetime and aging dynamics vary significantly with chemistry, operating conditions, cycling demands, electrode design, and operational history, which makes optimal handling, design, and maintenance difficult," researcher Kandler Smith said in the summary. He leads the lab's electrochemical modeling and data science research. "It's especially difficult to understand the physical degradation mechanisms of a battery during use without opening it up. We need reliable methods to check in on batteries' internal state in a nondestructive way," Smith added. The lab's approach replaces the common physics-based model with what's called a physics-informed neural network, or PINN. It also uses artificial intelligence. It's geared to quantify degradation and provide better solutions to manage battery aging during cycling, per the release. It's a field the team has been working in for a while. The lab has already produced a couple of physics-based predictive models. But they require a slow quagmire of computations. PINN understands physics and can quickly apply its laws to a pattern-based prediction model. It's an ingenious marriage of the two diagnostic setups, according to the summary. Other labs are researching sensors and scans that can detect flaws in packs to better prevent failures and even rare, yet serious, fires. It's part of a whirlwind of battery breakthroughs happening around the world that are providing better components, chemistry, and production methods that are lowering costs and improving performance. Goldman Sachs forecast that pack prices will drop 50% by next year, partly thanks to improving technology. The units are crucial to the cleaner energy shift by both powering EVs and storing renewable electricity. Battery backups combined with a solar panel system at home can greatly reduce or eliminate your utility bill. A setup can charge your EV while providing blackout protection. To fulfill the promise of AI, data centers have sprung up around the country, using water, land, and electricity to deliver computing power for the booming tech. A team of BI reporters and editors sought to quantify the spread of these centers and show the impact on their surroundings. I chatted with two lead reporters on the project, Hannah Beckler and Dakin Campbell, about their takeaways. Hannah, Dakin, in a nutshell, how many data centers are there in the United States, and how fast is the boom happening? There are 1,240 data centers either built or approved for construction in the United States. That's four times as many as there were in 2010. What is the biggest worry with the spread of data centers — the green space they use, the water, the electricity? And if these concerns are urgent, why aren't towns pushing back? Electricity and water use are large concerns because they are limited resources. But data centers often bring tax revenue, which towns use to build roads, schools, and fire stations. Public officials have been caught in the middle, with some towns pushing back and others openly welcoming the industry with tax breaks. Are there benefits to data centers, both for nearby property owners and for the promise of AI? AI could usher in tremendous benefits, from business savings to life-saving science. Many also argue that a leading AI industry bolsters national security. For nearby property owners, the benefits are typically the tax revenue their towns collect, short-term jobs in construction (which can also bring road congestion), and perhaps a few dozen longer-term tech jobs in their community. For the future, what are the most important issues about data centers that people should be watching? The largest tech firms understand that public opinion is mixed about their use of resources like power and water, and they are taking steps to improve their efficiency. It will be critical to see whether they will find ways to use less water and more renewable energy. In Silicon Valley, companies like Meta and OpenAI are offering eye-popping pay packages to technical hires to secure the best talent in the AI race. At the same time, however, rank-and-file tech workers are being laid off by the thousands. The result is an uneven shift that's going all-in on AI while squeezing other areas of innovation.
