RTS U-Turns On Special Gaza Award & Is 'Discussing How This Will Take Place'
The body sparked anger when it scrapped the award, telling jurors it did not wish to 'add fuel to the fire' around Gaza: How to Survive a War Zone, the BBC documentary that was pulled after it was revealed that the child narrator was the son of a Hamas minister.

But eight days on and following a letter signed by nearly 400 journalists and copying in King Charles, the award will now take place in some form.
'Following the decision to pause the presentation of the award, the RTS met this week as part of the Society's previously announced review process,' a spokeswoman said. 'The Society remains committed to recognising the work of Journalists in Gaza and will be making the Special Award. It is discussing how this will take place.' The 'review process' referenced was due to take place regardless of the Gaza saga.
The spokeswoman reiterated that 'it was felt strongly that there was potential at the ceremony on the night for the recent controversy around some Gaza coverage to overshadow the Award.' At the time of the award SNAFU, RTS television journalism awards chair Adrian Wells explicitly referenced attacks against the BBC's film from right-wing newspapers, as well as criticism of Channel 4 News for featuring the same teen in an email to jurors.
The letter was signed by hundreds of journalists including Jonathan Dimbleby, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Orla Guerin, with Dimbleby later calling the RTS 'cowards' for its decision. The letter copied in RTS royal patron King Charles and sought a meeting with the King.

Wahlberg later apologized for the statement. In 1961, Elizabeth Taylor came dangerously close to death after a severe bout of pneumonia. In the 2024 documentary, Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes, Taylor said that after being rushed to a London hospital, doctors performed an 18-hour emergency tracheotomy, but that during the procedure, she was declared dead, saying, "Actually four times I was called dead, and stopped breathing." Taylor, of course, pulled through and a month and a half later won her first Oscar for Best Actress. She attended the Academy Awards and proudly displayed her tracheotomy scar. Isla Fisher had a terrifying near-death experience while filming Now You See Me when a stunt went wrong. While performing an underwater escape scene, she became trapped after her feet got caught, and she was unable to surface. The crew initially thought she was acting, as she was supposed to be struggling, unaware that she was genuinely struggling. She was freed after a stunt coordinator realized her feet were stuck, and he pulled the water quick-release switch from the tank. The moment that it happened is in the final cut of the movie. After giving birth in 2017, Serena Williams faced life-threatening complications that put her health in serious jeopardy. She developed a pulmonary embolism — a dangerous blood clot in her lung. The coughing from the embolism caused her C-section wound to pop open, which led her into surgery, where the doctors discovered she had a hematoma (a localized swelling of blood outside blood vessels) in her abdomen. Williams ended up having to stay six weeks in bed as part of her recovery. While filming Cast Away, Tom Hanks suffered a cut to his leg that led to a serious staph infection. In 2009, Hanks told the BBC that he didn't know he had an infection and just thought his leg was sore. He went to the doctor, who told him, "I have to put you in the hospital because we have to get this infection out of you before it poisons your blood and you die." He ended up staying three days in the hospital, while production shut down for three weeks to allow for his skin to heal. In 2021, Brooke Shields experienced a serious accident when she fell and broke her femur while exercising at the gym. The injury led her to have two surgeries (with rods and a metal plate inserted into her). During her recovery, she developed a very serious staph infection at the site of the injury. Her doctors feared that the infection was caused by a type of bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics, which could have put her at risk of sepsis, a life-threatening response to an infection that can cause organ failure. Luckily for Shields, it turned out not to be that type of bacteria. While riding his motorcycle to the set of his Hulu series Catch-22 in Sardinia, Italy, in 2018, George Clooney was involved in a serious accident that sent him flying through the air after colliding with a car. According to the local paper, La Nuova Sardegna, he was taken to the hospital with a "slight trauma to the pelvis and bruises to one leg and an arm." He later revealed that doctors told him it was a miracle he wasn't paralyzed or killed. In a 2021 interview with the Sunday Times, Clooney said he thought he was going to die, saying, "I was waiting for my switch to turn off." In 2020, Simon Cowell broke his back in multiple places after crashing an electric bike at his home in Malibu. Doctors said he narrowly avoided severing his spinal cord, which could have left him paralyzed. He underwent a six-hour surgery to repair the damage, during which metal rods were inserted into his back. Cowell said of the accident, "That it was worse than people thought," and that he was "Lucky to be alive." When she was 5 years old, Jennifer Aniston accidentally fell into the pool while riding her tricycle, which she didn't let go of, and sank her to the bottom of the pool. Her brother saw it happen and dove in to save her. The incident left her with a lifelong phobia of being submerged underwater. While filming her movie Cake, she was forced to confront it while filming a pool scene. During the filming of the 1981 movie Modern Problems, Chevy Chase was accidentally electrocuted on set when he was filming a dream sequence where he was wearing a suit made of lights. In 2010, Pink narrowly avoided a catastrophic injury when a harness malfunctioned during an aerial stunt during a concert in Nuremberg, Germany. Cardinal brings aid to Gaza after Israeli strike on Catholic church
GAZA (Reuters) -Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the highest ranking Catholic official in Jerusalem, entered Gaza on Friday to bring humanitarian aid and comfort to victims of Israel's strike on the sole Catholic church of the Palestinian enclave. Three people died and several were injured in the strike on the Holy Family Church compound in Gaza City a day earlier. Photos released by the church showed its roof had been hit close to the main cross, scorching the stone facade, and that windows had been broken. The church has offered shelter to hundreds of Palestinians since the start of Israel's military campaign against Hamas in the enclave in October 2023, following the group's deadly attack on Israel. In an interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera daily, Pizzaballa said a Catholic presence would remain in Gaza "whatever happens," and expressed doubts about Israel's comments that the strike was a mistake. "We are not a target. They say it was an error. Even if everybody here believes it wasn't," the cardinal said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday blamed "stray ammunition" and said his country was "investigating the incident and remains committed to protecting civilians and holy sites." It is extremely rare for foreign officials to be allowed entry into Gaza, as Israel has essentially sealed its borders. Pizzaballa was accompanied by Theophilos III, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem. The two religious leaders brought "hundreds of tons of food supplies as well as first aid kits and urgently needed medical equipment," Pizzaballa's Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said in a statement. The aid is meant not only for Gaza's small Christian community but for "as many families as possible", the Patriarchate said, adding it also ensured the evacuation of those injured in the church strike. Pope Leo, who on Thursday said he was "deeply saddened" by the attack but declined to blame Israel for it, called the cardinal and Theophilos on Friday to convey his support for their mission, Pizzaballa told Vatican media. The Pope expressed his love and affection for the Gaza parish community "and reiterated his intention to do everything possible to stop the needless slaughter of innocents," the Vatican said. 'However I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment,' he added. 'I'm shocked and saddened by the allegations as I would never wish to cause anyone offence.' Torode came forward around 12 hours after the independent report published into Wallace's behavior, which substantiated 45 of the 83 allegations made against Wallace, whose position hosting MasterChef was described as 'untenable' by the boss of MasterChef production company Banijay UK. Wallace has apologized but reiterated his view that 'none of the serious allegations against me were upheld.' Aside from Wallace, the report said 10 standalone allegations were made against other people over the period 2012 to 2019, with two of these having been substantiated, one of whom Torode is now revealing to be himself. The other was over a complaint of 'swearing' and Banijay has said it is dealing with both. In its own statement, the BBC said it 'takes these findings very seriously and we have asked Banijay UK to take action to address these issues, which is underway. This will be completed as a priority.' Torode struck up a close relationship with Wallace over their two decades presenting MasterChef. When allegations against Wallace first emerged late last year, Torode said he found them 'truly upsetting.'
