Moo Deng turns 1: Thailand's internet-famous baby hippo celebrates birthday feasting on massive fruit platter
The celebrations began on Asalha Puja, a Thai public holiday, and will run until 13 July at the zoo's hippo enclosure in Chonburi province, about two hours from Bangkok. Moo Deng was given a massive tropical fruit platter as throngs of adoring fans turned up for her four-day party.
Highlights include a birthday cake funded by a skincare beautician for 100,000 baht (approx £2,100), mascot parades, and a photo exhibition titled Moo Deng in Every Moment, chronicling her journey from a 5kg newborn to a 93kg toddler, reported the Nation.
Children under 12 or shorter than 135cm are being granted free entry during the festivities, which also feature drawing and modelling corners, games, and licensed merchandise ranging from plush toys to Moo Deng-branded ice cream.
A charity auction will sell off memorabilia and some of the young hippo's belongings –including her favourite plastic basin – with proceeds supporting animal care at the zoo.
The festivities have attracted fans from across Asia.
'She's really special to me, she makes me happy,' Jennifer Tang, a visitor from Malaysia told AFP as she described the young hippo as a 'chaos rage potato'.
Moo Deng – meaning "bouncy pork" in Thai – was born on 10 July 2024 and quickly rose to stardom after her keeper, Atthapon Nundee, began sharing her antics on social media. Within days, her videos went viral, prompting the zoo to livestream her enclosure and capitalise on her fame with merchandise and corporate endorsements.
In the final quarter of 2024 alone, Khao Kheow Open Zoo saw visitor numbers triple to 600,000. Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy secured sponsorship deals with an e-commerce site and a telecoms firm, while Moo Deng-themed sculptures now welcome guests at the zoo entrance.
Her fame has even reached diplomatic and celebrity circles. The US Embassy in Bangkok sent a plush toy named Sammy as a birthday present, and Hollywood actors Sam Nivola and Sarah Catherine Hook – stars of The White Lotus – visited her earlier this year.
Moo Deng has appeared in a Saturday Night Live sketch and correctly predicted Donald Trump 's 2024 US presidential win by choosing between two vegetable cakes. Google honoured her with a doodle, and a Thai music label released a viral techno anthem bearing her name.
But her popularity has begun to dip, mirroring the short-lived fame of other internet-famous animals like China's Hua Hua the panda and Australia's Pesto the penguin. Still, Mr Nundee insists Moo Deng enjoys the attention. 'Her eyes light up when people take photos of her,' he told AFP. 'She used to be very naughty and jumped around all the time. Now she only eats and sleeps.'
Despite the fading frenzy, Moo Deng continues to bring joy. In February, zoo staff granted the final wish of a terminally ill six-year-old Thai boy, Auto, by organising a private viewing of the hippo, reported the Strait Times. Moo Deng unusually stayed out of the pool and visible until the boy left. 'That day was so much fun,' staff later wrote on Facebook. Auto died on 2 June.
The pygmy hippopotamus is an endangered species, native to West Africa, with fewer than 2,500 left in the wild according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. While Moo Deng's fame hasn't significantly boosted awareness of their plight, experts suggest her early cuteness may ensure lasting affection.
'Maybe part of our appreciation of cuteness is knowing that it doesn't last very long,' said Dr Joshua Paul Dale, who researches cuteness at Japan's Chuo University. 'That can kind of continue on and affect our relationship with cute things, even when they grow up,' told AFP.

A TRAVEL fan has revealed what it was really like to live and work on a cruise ship. Anaya Daisy, who is currently exploring Thailand but was previously working on a cruise ship in the shore excursions department, claimed that during her stint on the ship, she never got any days off. Despite this, she revealed the benefits to living on a cruise ship and explained that not only was the food free, but she didn't have to pay any rent or tax either. Posting on social media, the brunette got candid on cruise ship life, as she said: 'Do you get days off while working on a cruise ship? Now, this is a question I get asked quite a lot, both by people off the ship and then guests that are actually on the ship, but the answer, unfortunately, is no, we don't get any days off.' Anaya explained that 'most of the crew' don't get any days off, as it is 'an unwritten rule' that you work the entirety of your contract. The content creator, who doesn't have to pay tax whilst on board, acknowledged that contracts can range from anywhere for three months up to nine months. She added: 'Because the cruise is running nearly every day of the year, we can't have any days off because obviously, we're gonna have passengers, and who's gonna look after the passengers if everyone's having days off? 'Yes, this does sound like a lot, and yes, it sometimes does feel like a lot, but even though we're working seven days a week, that doesn't necessarily mean that you're gonna be working all of the entire day.' Anaya then expressed that rather than having a day off, many departments will get the middle of the day off to relax and explore the cruise ship. Her hours vary, but she never works more than 10 hours a day. But Anaya, who gets free food onboard and is allowed to eat at the crew buffet, isn't bothered by never having a full day off, as she claimed that there are 'so many perks of working on a cruise ship.' If you're going to get dumped, doing so at the altar is for the best
If there was ever a good way to get dumped, it probably isn't at the altar on your wedding day. That's what we'd all assume, at least. There could be nothing worse, surely, than inviting all your friends and family to a celebration that has emptied your pockets only to be left standing alone in an overpriced gown, wondering if your beloved is ever coming down the aisle, and finding out they are not. Well, it happened to Kayley Stead, a Welsh woman who has gone viral on TikTok after sharing the speech she gave after being jilted on her big day in 2022. It turned out to be one of the best things that had ever happened to her, she said. Rather than cancelling the wedding, Stead decided to go ahead, turning the event into a celebration of herself, even delivering an off-the-cuff speech about self-love. Marking the moment with a commemorative TikTok that has had more than 7.6 million views, Stead shared a series of clips featuring herself cutting into her three-tiered wedding cake, dancing with friends, and enjoying herself despite the unlikely circumstances. 'I had to look back on this day for this butterfly effect trend,' she wrote in the caption, referring to the term about how unexpected changes and circumstances can lead to major life transformations, and which has become a big summer trend on TikTok. 'This day will forever be a part of me, not because I was left on my wedding day, but for the fact that I persevered and created a memory with so many loved ones,' she added. 'A day that will continue shaping me for the rest of my life.' Who knew that getting dumped on your wedding day could be so wonderful? Frankly, there are no good ways for someone to end a relationship with you. But doing it in a setting where you're already surrounded by friends and family, with all the pomp and pageantry required to have a commiseration-slash-celebration afterwards, does make some sense. I'm not saying I'd like to be dumped that way, though there have been some instances where it might've been preferable. Or at least a little more inventive. Like the time when my first boyfriend decided to dump me via voicemail. I was 13, and our relationship had thus far amounted to a few snogs and some hand-holding. But still: it stung. There was also the time a guy I was seeing decided to end things with me at The World's End pub (how apt!) in Camden after asking me what I liked about our relationship and letting me rave about him for 40 minutes before admitting he wasn't happy. Sometimes, the best way to be dumped is when it's quick and dirty, like ripping off a plaster. That was the case for a friend whose boyfriend ended their relationship out of the blue, midway through a conversation about attending his sister's upcoming wedding. They'd talked about what dress she'd wear and whether it was appropriate. He helped her choose a dress and then told her their relationship was over, proceeding to pack the empty rucksack he'd brought with his belongings. It was sudden and, at the time, horrific. But in retrospect, the brutality of it helped her to move on quickly. Another friend was dumped with such flair that he considers it one of the most incredible things ever to happen to him. 'It was 1998 and I was in the throes of first love,' he recalled to me via text. 'Having started our relationship on the Eurostar on the way to Paris (for a school trip), we went out for four months, two of which she spent in her native Italy. During her time away, she'd send letters signing off 'te amo.' Then one day a letter arrived, out of the blue, suggesting we go our separate ways. No 'te amo,' just an 'arrivederci'.' Ultimately, there is no really good way for someone to end a relationship with you. It's always going to hurt. And sometimes it will seem as if the ground has just been pulled from underneath you, and all of the joy has drained from your life. AN EX-soap star has spoken out after a catchphrase she recorded for a TV advert unexpectedly turned her into a global sensation. Many people might recognise actress Zoë Lister, 43, from her four-year stint on Hollyoaks until 2010 - but to millions more, she's the current voice behind an iconic airline ad campaign. 11 11 11 The voice actor started recording voice-overs for Jet2 in 2019, with commercials played between episodes of ITV series Love Island. But now her famous phrase, "Nothing beats a Jet2 Holiday" - from an advert first broadcast last year - is being clipped and used by hundreds of thousands of fans on TikTok and Instagram. Zoë has given an insight into a whirlwind few weeks after her lines from the popular commercial went viral on social media. The catchphrase has been described as the sound of the summer after social media users started dubbing the track over clips showing Brits brawling abroad and turbulent flights. The craze got to a point where Zoë believed it would spell the end of her Jet2 career. In an exclusive interview with The Sun, the mum-of-two admitted she is still dumbfounded by her sudden fame. She joked: "It's all a bit silly, isn't it? "It was just a voiceover. I've done these voice overs for several years for Jet2, and this was just a new campaign. When quizzed on the origins of the slogan, she told The Sun: "We usually kind of work it a few times. "Especially the line, um, that's £200 off for a family of four because it is kind of so ridiculous. "We're like, how do we say this without being really patronising? "Because my normal speaking voice is not quite my voiceover. "I'm not selling people holidays in my day to day interactions! "I remember the sound engineer told me, 'you've just got to throw it away. Let them in on it like they're your friend'." Zoë is now looking at launching her own podcast on the back of her TikTok fame. She added: "I'm very grateful that Jet2 are going to re-sign my contract. "That was my number one priority. But I do other things, I'm a writer and an actor as well. "I started to make silly comedy videos on TikTok last year because this is the future now. "So I'll probably just keep putting videos out and see what emerges from that. "I haven't really done any acting for ages because I've had children. You just run out of time to be creative. "You don't have the time or energy to be able to do things in the hope that somebody might buy your script. "But I've been working on a podcast idea for ages.
