
Some car insurance customers ‘shaving over £200 off renewal quotes by haggling'
Which? commissioned a survey of more than 2,000 people across the UK with car insurance, asking how, if at all, the cost of cover has changed since their last renewal.
Around six in 10 (59%) said they haggled with their insurer, with most doing so over the phone.
Three-fifths (61%) of those who contacted their insurer received a reduction to the original price offered.
The average amount motorists that pay annually for cover saved per year was £64 – although some received much more sizeable reductions, with 5% of these people saying they were able to save more than £200 after haggling.
Overall, nearly half (49%) of drivers noticed their premium go up at their last renewal, while a quarter (27%) saw a reduction. Nearly a quarter (23%) said it had not changed and 1% did not know.
The survey also indicated that customers facing challenges at renewal – for example experiencing a difficult life event, a health condition, struggling to manage their finances, or lacking confidence or capability – appear to have a different experience of haggling than those who were not.
Vulnerable customers were more likely to discuss their premium with their insurer, and these discussions led to price reductions at similar rates.
But these customers were also more likely to have to change their policy to get the lower price and were less likely to say they found the process easy, according to Which?
It said the Consumer Duty on financial firms sets out the expectation that consumers in vulnerable circumstances should experience outcomes as good as those for other customers.
With some motorists receiving such hefty discounts after haggling, Which? believes there are 'serious questions' about whether the first offer from the insurer in some cases really represents fair value.
It also said that with many people renewing without discussing the price, some customers may be paying over the odds.
Sam Richardson, deputy editor of Which? Money, said: 'While some people may feel daunted by haggling with their insurer, this research underlines how it is worth doing for many consumers and is likely to be one of the most effective ways to cut the cost of your renewal.'
The survey was carried out by Deltapoll in April and May.
An Association of British Insurers (ABI) spokesperson said: 'Our members take their commitment to their customers and their regulatory requirements seriously.
'They consistently work hard to deliver dependable, high-quality products that provide genuine value. Variations between an initial online quote and a bespoke telephone offer often come down to a deeper dive into individual factors which may have changed from the previous policy – such as your vehicle's security measures, driving habits, level of cover and choice of voluntary excess.
'We'd always recommend shopping around to secure cover that truly meets your needs, not just based on price.'
Whether to offer cover and at what price is a commercial decision for individual insurers based on their risk appetite.
In 2022, rules were implemented to end a 'loyalty penalty' paid by longstanding insurance customers.
Under the rules, when existing home and motor insurance customers renew their insurance policy, the price charged by the insurance provider cannot be more expensive than the price that they charge an equivalent new customer for the equivalent policy.
Here are some steps for haggling suggested by Which?:
1. If your insurer has increased its renewal price, ask it to justify the increase.
2. Then point out the lower prices you have found elsewhere, and ask your insurer if it can better those offers.
3. If it is not able to provide a better quote, state that you are willing to go elsewhere. If you have been a loyal customer for many years, it could be worth mentioning this.
4. If the insurer is not budging much on the premium but you would still like to stick with your provider, one option could be to ask for an add-on (such as breakdown cover) to be thrown in. Just make sure that it is worth it.

Public perceptions about banks have improved since the launch of the Consumer Duty two years ago, which set higher standards of consumer protection, a survey indicates. The Consumer Duty was launched in July 2023, requiring financial firms to put customers at the heart of what they do, including when designing products and communicating with customers. Back in March 2023, YouGov asked people how they felt banks and financial services companies were performing. Just over two years later, it has carried out another survey, indicating improvements in public opinion. In the most recent survey, YouGov recorded 11 percentage-point increases in the proportion of people who believe banks provide information that is easy to understand (rising from 44% in 2023 to 55% in 2025); that banks protect customers from potential harm (from 40% in 2023 to 51%); and that they provide value for money (up from 36% to 47%). There was also a three-point rise in the proportion of people who believe that banks provide good customer service (from 60% to 63%). The proportion of people who believe banks are doing a poor job of communicating risk to consumers has dropped seven percentage points from 47% to 40%. Under the duty, financial firms should provide helpful and accessible customer support, so it is as easy to sort out a problem, switch or cancel a product, as it was to buy it in the first place. They should also provide timely and clear information, helping people to make good financial decisions. Important information should not be buried in lengthy small print. Providers should also offer products and services that are right for the customer and products and services should also provide fair value. Firms also need to consider whether someone is in a vulnerable situation, for example due to poor health or financial troubles. The latest research was carried out in June 2025, among more than 2,100 people across Britain. The 2023 survey involved 2,000 people across Britain.

Major supermarket now 17% more expensive for one staple grocery item
One price comparison has discovered this staple grocery item has steadily risen in price over the years. Buying in the weekly shop has become quite expensive over the years. With the cost of groceries rising, it can be handy to know where to get the best prices. That's why the Manchester Evening News has been conducting a weekly price comparison on a basket of eight staple items at six main supermarkets - with one being the most expensive for the third week in a row. One of the products that is said to have been steadily rising in price is a 500g pack of supermarket-bought mince, either 20 or 25 per cent fat, with Sainsbury's now said to be charging £3.50. According to the comparison, this makes the firm 17 per cent more expensive than Aldi, Lidl, Asda and Morrisons where the same pack of mince is priced at £2.99. Meanwhile, Tesco costs £3.09, making it a 13 per cent difference. Over the past three years, the analysis has found that the staple grocery item is now 77 per cent more expensive than it initially was. At Aldi, it once cost just £1.69, its cheapest price, while, at the same time, Sainsbury's charged £2, which is just over half the price it costs now. Not only does Sainsbury's latest £3.50 charge make it the most expensive it has so far been, it also marks the third consecutive week the firm has been charging the highest prices, with a bill of £13.90 for the eight items in total. Meanwhile, Aldi remains the cheapest for a fifth consecutive week at £13.09, with rival Lidl just a penny behind at £13.10 - just a one penny difference overall. Asda is now third cheapest at £13.33, followed by Tesco at £13.46 and Morrisons at £13.55. However, it is worth noting that Aldi has disagreed with the analysis, arguing that it does not take into account the difference in quality, as it references its own Diplomat Red Label tea bags and its coffee as 'higher quality' than the comparative products used, while its tins of beans are also heavier than others. Arguments of quality can also be made in reference to the meat, as Aldi and Lidl, along with Morrisons, sell a 25 per cent fat pack, whereas the others sell 20 per cent fat, which is seen as better quality. An Aldi spokesperson added: 'Our promise to customers is that they will make significant savings every time they shop with Aldi, which is why we've been named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for four years running.' Another supermarket that has disagreed is Asda, as it argues that the small sample of eight items does not represent either its fuller picture of prices or its deals, with the firm saying that, across the board, its Just Essentials line is the largest and cheapest available. Sainsbury's pointed out that there have been industry-wide factors that have influenced the price of beef. A spokesperson for the supermarket said: "This review of a limited number of products does not reflect the fantastic value our customers will find at Sainsbury's. Little-known Clubcard rule called 'kick in the teeth' for Tesco customers
There's nothing better than scanning your Tesco Clubcard at the end of your shop and seeing that price go down – though it would be much nicer if the prices were just cheaper to start off with. Especially considering the fact that not everyone is allowed to use a Clubcard to save those valuable pennies. In fact, consumer watchdog Which? dubbed the supermarket's benefits scheme a 'teenage kick in the teeth', because the card has an age limit. You can't use a Clubcard if you're under the age of 18, meaning younger shoppers are forced to pay higher prices. This restriction means Tesco has been named a winner of the Which? 2025 'Shoddie awards' – dedicated to exposing annoying practices in supermarket retailers. Now, it's not the only retailer that has this age limit on its benefits card. Morrisons and Waitrose also have an 18 or older rule, and even prevent people without fixed addresses from accessing lower prices. Lidl got a shout out too, particularly for having a loyalty card only available via an app, so those without access to 'digital connectivity' also suffer. These supermarkets let you join their loyalty schemes if you're 16 or over, and you can get a card to scan, so if you don't have a phone, you're covered. Aldi is also a great alternative because, despite not having a loyalty card, it still regularly offers the cheapest groceries in the monthly price comparison. It had the most affordable supermarket shop in June, charging £131.52 for a 79 item shop, although Lidl was close behind at just 37p more expensive (without the loyalty card). Asda came third, with the same basket of groceries costing £144.82, a whole £2 cheaper than a Tesco shop with the Clubcard discount. While the age limit on the Clubcard is annoying, there's one perk we can't stop thinking about. To celebrate the loyalty scheme's 30th year, a million Virgin points will be awarded to one lucky customer to be spent on holidays, flights, travel upgrades and experiences galore.
