Japanese women are making a meaningful impact around the world. If they were ever invisible, certainly they are not now. What inspired them to step forward into their roles today? This time, JAPAN Forward set out to feature Midori Ito, who became the first female sales representative at Sekisui House, for our series " Groundbreakers ."
Midori Ito served as a Standing Audit and Supervisory Board Member at Sekisui House, one of Japan's largest homebuilders. She retired from the company in the spring of 2025 after a long and successful career.
Starting as the company's first female sales representative, over time, Ito took on a key role in promoting diversity. She supported female employees who wanted to continue working through various life stages.
Even after retiring from the company, she hopes to create a society where people can live fulfilling lives. Her focus now extends beyond the corporate world.
In 2018, shortly after being appointed an executive officer in charge of diversity at Sekisui House, Ito introduced a groundbreaking policy. It required male employees to take at least one full month of paternity leave.
"I've always wanted to support motivated employees. Looking back, unfortunately, many women left their jobs because they had to shoulder housework, childcare, or eldercare alone," she recalls.
"If partners support each other, they can both grow their careers. I believe that mandatory paternity leave could spark those vital conversations. And more than anything, it makes children happier too."

Things were very different when Ito first joined Sekisui House. At the time, Japan had yet to enact the Equal Employment Opportunity Law.
"When I first became a sales rep, most meetings were full of men. I definitely felt the pressure of being outnumbered," she recalls.
But her uniqueness became her strength. "Being a woman made me stand out, and people remembered me," she says.
Ito eventually became the company's first female sales representative. She later held roles such as store manager. Throughout her career, she sold a cumulative total of 300 homes and was even honored with the company's President's Award.
"There was a time when I worried that customers wouldn't trust me just because I was a woman," she reflects. "But one customer once asked me, 'Why would being a woman be a problem?' It made me realize how meaningless it was to focus on gender differences. What really mattered was the value I offered the customer."
When asked why she joined the company and the housing industry, she smiles. "It was a chance encounter — I just happened to see a newspaper ad. I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to do when I was young. And that was okay."
Ito began her career as a sales assistant at a model home park in Sekisui House's Kobe Sales Office. From the start, she found fulfillment not only in satisfying customers but also in collaborating with her team.

Unlike most women at the time, Ito continued working after marrying at 23. Back then, many female employees left the workforce upon marriage or childbirth. She credits her family's support for enabling her to keep going.
"That's what people used to call 'marriage retirement,'" she explains. "When I got married, my husband respected my decision to keep working. After giving birth to my eldest daughter, I was transferred to a model home site near my house. But there was no formal maternity leave system at the time."
Ito drew inspiration from her mother. "Back in the 1960s, she was financially independent and studied bookkeeping while working so she could move into a better profession," Ito recalls. "I'll never forget that when I confided in her about struggles at work in her later years, she smiled and said, 'Failure is the foundation of success.'"
After returning to work, Ito became the company's first female general sales representative. At first, she accompanied her manager on sales visits. But when it came time to discuss contracts, customers often directed their questions to him.
"I realized that if things continued like that, I'd never sell a house on my own," she says. "So I spoke up and asked to start handling sales independently."
Her success came from genuine care for her clients. She visited company housing complexes and asked about residents' family structures and how long they'd lived there. Then she tailored proposals accordingly. She also distributed newsletters and housing information, gradually becoming a trusted advisor.
"Day and night, I was always thinking about how to bring joy to the customers right in front of me," she recalls. "Even something as small as noticing, 'That household over there might be thinking of visiting a model home,' kept me motivated."
Eventually, Ito was appointed store manager. "Two junior female employees approached me, saying they wanted to work in sales. When I brought it up with my manager, he agreed on the condition that I take responsibility and become the store manager. I couldn't say no after seeing the fire in their eyes," she explains.
However, the new model home they were assigned to was built on the site of a former construction office. It was in a subdivision where most homes had already been sold. Some colleagues warned it was a bad idea.
"I definitely sensed a 'Let's see what she can do' attitude," she says. "But it was an older subdivision, and many homes were aging. So we went door to door, reaching out to neighbors to tap into the demand for rebuilding. When we opened the model home, so many customers came that they couldn't all fit inside. We had to hold a pre-opening event to accommodate them."
That initiative led to 17 years of continuous success in the area. Ito and her team maintained the top market share throughout.
Her leadership was also evident during times of crisis — especially after the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. At the time, she was the manager of the company's Yamanomachi model home site in Kobe.
"As soon as I confirmed the safety of my family and employees, I rushed out to check on our homeowners," she says. "Not a single Sekisui House home was fully or partially destroyed. Seeing everyone's faces brought immense relief. It reaffirmed for me that a home is more than just a building — it's a shelter that protects lives and families."
After turning 50, Ito reached a major turning point. Wanting to support the growth and retention of female sales staff across Japan, she volunteered to lead Sekisui House's newly established Women's Advancement Promotion Group.
"The environments these women worked in and the challenges they faced were all different," she explains. "I kept asking myself, 'Are they truly receiving the support and development they need?' Until then, my focus had always been on helping customers directly. But I came to realize that by supporting female sales staff, I could indirectly support all of their customers, too."
Her efforts soon expanded beyond gender, and Ito became a key driver of broader diversity initiatives. These included mandatory paternity leave for men and workplace accommodations for employees undergoing medical treatment. She worked to ensure Sekisui House could be a place where everyone could thrive, regardless of their circumstances.
In the spring of 2025, Ito retired from Sekisui House after decades of dedicated service. She now continues her mission as a board member of the general incorporated association Expo 2025 Sakuyahime Congress — a group of female business leaders committed to improving lives.
"It [the association] began with recipients of the first Osaka Sakuyahime Award, established in 2016 by the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry to honor outstanding female leaders," Ito explains.
"Led by Kayoko Fujimoto, CEO of the Fujimoto Yume Group, the group includes many influential women. We've formed deep bonds by openly sharing our challenges and how we've overcome them."
The group was launched as a consortium in 2019 and became a general incorporated association in 2023.
"We've been able to continue thanks to the support of so many people," Ito says. "I've always wanted to give back to my hometown, Osaka."
At Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, the group is leading three key initiatives. One of them is the Sakuya Wolf Project, which features 10 wolf-shaped benches created by artist Tomoko Konoike. These benches are installed at the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion.
Looking to the future, Ito says, "After the Expo, we plan to lend these benches to various locations free of charge. We want to use art to inspire and uplift communities."
But Ito emphasizes that her focus goes beyond women to include broader diversity. "Ms Konoike reminded us that even the term 'women's empowerment' can sometimes create divisions," she explains. "Our goal is to support everyone, not just women. Through connection, we hope to help build a future rooted in well-being at its core."
Founded in 1960, Sekisui House is one of Japan's leading homebuilders. In recent years, the company has expanded its global presence, particularly in the United States, with a focus on detached housing.
For the fiscal year ending January 2025, Sekisui House reported sales of ¥4.0585 trillion JPY (around $27.9 billion USD). As of January 2025, the company employed 15,664 people on a standalone basis, including 3,320 licensed first-class architects.

Trade Deal Puts Japan–US Alliance on a New Economic and Strategic Footing

Japan and the United States have finalized a sweeping new trade agreement. It aims to deepen cooperation across strategic industries, including energy infrastructure, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, and shipbuilding. The deal also includes an ambitious $550 billion investment framework and expanded defense procurement on the Japanese side, marking a major step forward in the two countries' push to align economic and national security interests amid global instability. A standout feature of the deal is Japan's successful negotiation of a "safety clause" that effectively grants it most-favored-nation treatment for Section 232 tariffs. These US tariffs, imposed on national security grounds, have been applied to key sectors, including steel, and are expected to target high-tech goods such as semiconductors and pharmaceuticals soon. According to William Chou, deputy director of the Hudson Institute, the clause represents a "significant development." In his response to an interview request from JAPAN Forward, Chou said the deal could secure Japan's competitive edge in sensitive industries. "It ensures Japan will always pay the lowest negotiated rate on (these) tariffs," Chou explained. That, he emphasized, is a big deal for industries like semiconductors and pharma, where even marginal cost differences affect global competitiveness. However, it remains unclear whether this clause will apply to future Section 232 actions, something both governments have yet to clarify. "This is worth clarifying," Chou said, cautioning that the scope and longevity of the clause may determine its strategic value. Another key component of the agreement is a massive $550 billion bilateral investment framework aimed at mobilizing public and private capital into critical infrastructure and industry projects in the US. But the mechanism behind the fund remains murky. "We don't have details on how it'll be operated and the timescale," Chou noted. "[US Commerce Secretary Howard] Lutnick has said that the US will decide on the projects. [Minister in Charge of Economic Revitalization Ryosei] Akazawa said NEXI [Nippon Export and Investment Insurance] and JBIC [Japan Bank for International Cooperation] will review the projects. (©Kyodo) A White House fact sheet highlighted projects in semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, and shipbuilding, all areas that align with Japan's industrial strengths and previous offers of cooperation made during negotiations. Still, the timing of the agreement has sparked political backlash in Tokyo. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is facing mounting pressure from within the Liberal Democratic Party, which is reeling after losing its upper house majority. Opposition parties have seized on the lack of detail to question the government's transparency and competence. "The opposition parties are using the lack of details of the $550 billion investment fund as a way to criticize Ishiba," Chou explained. While these kinds of investment frameworks typically take time to design, that nuance doesn't always land in political messaging, he suggested. Chou also pointed to two major investment announcements, SoftBank's $100 billion commitment to the US tech sector and Nippon Steel's $26 billion expansion, as evidence of Japan's serious engagement with American industrial revitalization. However, he noted that the Japanese side missed an opportunity to highlight these moves more aggressively during negotiations. "It was surprising that Japan didn't publicize these investments more to demonstrate its FDI (foreign direct investment) leadership in the US," he said. Chou added that even if they don't end up being part of the $550 billion fund, they send a strong signal. The deal also expands Japan's military purchases from the US, with annual defense imports increasing from $14 billion to $17 billion. Although not explicitly linked to the trade agreement, the increase is seen as part of the broader trend toward integrating economic and military policy. "Now that the trade deal is done, it will be interesting to see how this might affect future dialogue regarding Japanese defense spending," Chou said. Beyond the bilateral context, Chou believes the agreement serves as a template for future US trade strategy. In particular, it may preview how Washington will approach trade relationships with partners such as the European Union and South Korea, especially those with significant trade surpluses with the US. "This Japan deal is a model," Chou argued. He tied this approach directly to broader strategic goals: "The Trump administration's aim is to collaborate with allies on greater American industrial production, economic security/supply chains, and dominance in both tech and energy." In that sense, the agreement is not just another trade deal. It is a redefinition of the economic architecture underpinning the Japan-US alliance, and perhaps a preview of how America will do business with the world in a new era of great power competition. The alignment also underscores what Chou describes as the "deep, layered, and self-reinforcing" nature of the Japan-US alliance. Redefining Omotenashi: How MOTENAS JAPAN is Shaping Japan's Luxury Tourism

More than a simple gesture of politeness, omotenashi embodies Japan's enduring tradition of selfless hospitality, one that often leaves a lasting impression on visitors from around the world. Amid a sharp rise in inbound tourism, this spirit of omotenashi is being reimagined to resonate with a new generation of Japanophiles. And among those driving this transformation is Hitoshi Aoki, founder and CEO of MOTENAS JAPAN, a startup launched in 2019. In an interview with JAPAN Forward, Aoki reflected on his entrepreneurial journey, the evolving landscape of Japanese tourism, and how his company is adapting to these changes. Excerpts from the interview follow. Inbound tourism only began to recover around 2023 following the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent years, Japan has shifted its tourism strategy from attracting 60 million annual visitors by 2030 to focusing instead on enhancing travel experiences and generating ¥15 trillion JPY ($99 billion USD) in tourism revenue. For example, Hakuba, Niseko, and hiking routes like the Shimanami Kaido are being positioned as hubs for luxury and sustainable tourism. Still, Japan faces a delicate balancing act of scaling its tourism economy without diluting the authenticity and charm that make these destinations unique. I began my career at Reuters' Tokyo headquarters shortly after graduating from college, during Japan's bubble economy. Eager to work in an international environment, I joined the company as a systems engineer. Soon after, I was stationed in Singapore as an expatriate, working in the heart of Asia's financial district. That experience proved pivotal. It provided me with a firsthand understanding of what affluent international travelers seek when visiting foreign countries. However, I soon found myself constrained by a rigid corporate culture that left little room for individual creativity. If I wanted to build something meaningful, I knew I had to venture out on my own before it was too late. From the outset, my goal was to build a business centered on inbound tourism. I first tried a B2C model, renting out rooms to travelers. Although it saw some success, the work felt unfulfilling. I also launched a sushi-making experience for tourists in Tsukiji, which proved popular but wasn't financially viable. That's when I realized I had to shift my focus to B2B and think on a larger scale. At MOTENAS JAPAN, we offer premium services tailored to major corporations and organizations that seek experiences beyond typical group tours. At Kabuki-za in Ginza, our guests experience live kabuki performances accompanied by English commentary, enhancing their appreciation. Across Japan, we curate over 100 unique experiences, ranging from rare sake and whiskey tastings to private gatherings at breweries, along with personalized karate and judo lessons. Traditionally, Japanese cultural events such as kabuki, sumo, and shibai have been confined to large theaters or designated venues. While these settings hold great value, they can sometimes feel distant. We specialize in crafting exclusive and immersive experiences. Take kabuki, for example. Even many Japanese find its storylines and symbolism difficult to grasp. To bridge this gap, we invite professional kabuki actors to lead private sessions where they engage directly with our guests, explain their art, and demonstrate the intricate makeup and costume process up close. Later that evening, those same wrestlers joined the guests on the dance floor for a lively disco party. Another example was a request from a major foreign corporation for a Bushido-themed tour. We secured exclusive access to Kuon-ji Temple and invited expert instructors to lead hands-on experiences in samurai swordsmanship, ninja skills, geisha traditions, taiko drumming, and even ascetic training. (©REUTERS/Issei Kato) With China's e-commerce market more than ten times the size of Japan's, we provide end-to-end solutions to help clients tap into this vast opportunity, from market research to advertisement and cross-border e-commerce execution. Looking ahead, we plan to expand our presence to other countries, with Asia as our primary focus. There is no shortage of things to admire about Japan. It has a distinctive sense of beauty, rich traditional culture, stunning natural landscapes, deeply rooted social values, safety, cleanliness, and renowned omotenashi. But some of Japan's finest qualities have been rediscovered thanks to overseas engagement. Take Hakuba and Niseko, for example. Both have grown into popular destinations largely due to foreign investment, contributing to the revival of regional tourism. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is bragging that Japan has given him, as part of a new trade framework, $550 billion to invest in the United States. It's an astonishing figure, but still subject to negotiation and perhaps not the sure thing he's portraying. 'Japan is putting up $550 billion in order to lower their tariffs a little bit,' Trump said Thursday. 'They put up, as you could call it, seed money. Let's call it seed money.' He said 90% of any profits from the money invested would go to the U.S. even if Japan had put up the funds. 'It's not a loan or anything, it's a signing bonus,' the Republican president said, on the trade framework that lowered his threatened tariff from 25% to 15%, including on autos. A White House official said the terms are being negotiated and nothing has been formalized in writing. The official, who insisted on anonymity to detail the terms of the talks, suggested the goal was for the $550 billion fund to make investments at Trump's direction. The sum is significant: It would represent more than 10% of Japan's entire gross domestic product. The Japan External Trade Organization estimates that direct investment into the U.S. economy topped $780 billion in 2023. It is unclear the degree to which the $550 billion could represent new investment or flow into existing investment plans. What the trade framework announced Tuesday has achieved is a major talking point for the Trump administration. The president has claimed to have brought trillions of dollars in new investment into the U.S., though the impact of those commitments have yet to appear in the economic data for jobs, construction spending or manufacturing output. The framework also enabled Trump to say other countries are agreeing to have their goods taxed, even if some of the cost of those taxes are ultimately passed along to U.S. consumers. On the $550 billion, Japan's Cabinet Office said it involves the credit facility of state-affiliated financial institutions, such as Japan Bank for International Cooperation. Further details would be decided based on the progress of the investment deals. Japanese trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa, upon returning to Japan, did not discuss the terms of the $550 billion investment. Akazawa said he believes a written joint statement is necessary, at least on working levels, to avoid differences. He is not thinking about a legally binding trade pact. The U.S. apparently released its version of the deal while Japanese officials were on their return flight home. 'If we find differences of understanding, we may have to point them out and say 'that's not what we discussed,'' Akazawa said. The U.S. administration said the fund would be invested in critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, computer chips and shipbuilding, among other industries. It has said Japan will also buy 100 airplanes from Boeing and rice from U.S. farmers as part of the framework, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said would be evaluated every three months. 'And if the president is unhappy, then they will boomerang back to the 25% tariff rates, both on cars and the rest of their products. And I can tell you that I think at 25, especially in cars, the Japanese economy doesn't work,' Bessent told Fox News' 'The Ingraham Angle.' Akazawa denied that Bessent's quarterly review was part of the negotiations. 'In my past eight trips to the United States during which I held talks with the president and the ministers,' Akazawa said. 'I have no recollection of discussing how we ensure the implementation of the latest agreement between Japan and the United States.' He said it would cause major disruptions to the economy and administrative processes if the rates first rise to 25% as scheduled on Aug. 1 and then drop to 15%. 'We definitely want to avoid that and I believe that is the understanding shared by the U.S. side,' he said. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. On buying U.S. rice, Japanese officials have said they have no plans to raise the current 770,000-ton 'minimum access' cap to import more from America. Agricultural Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Japan will decide whether to increase U.S. rice imports and that Japan is not committed to a fixed quota. Trump's commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, has suggested that the Japanese agreement is putting pressure on other countries such as South Korea to strike deals with the U.S. Trump, who is traveling in Scotland, plans to meet on Sundayv with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss trade. 'Whatever Donald Trump wants to build, the Japanese will finance it for him,' Lutnick said Thursday on CNBC. 'Pretty amazing.' ___ Yamaguchi reported from Tokyo.
