K.N. Nehru questions EPS silence on Amit Shah's statement on forming coalition government

The Hindu14 hours ago
Claiming that the DMK alliance was strong, the party's principal secretary and Minister for Municipal Administration, K.N. Nehru, on Tuesday said it was the AIADMK alliance that was in a dilemma on whether to form a coalition government or not.
Speaking to reporters here, he said AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswamy was claiming for so long that it would form a grand alliance to take on the DMK alliance. Some leaders claimed that some constituents of the DMK alliance would break away from it. But the DMK alliance remained strong. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had said that differences, if any, with the alliance partners would be sorted out at the time of election.
On the other hand, the AIADMK was yet to take a clear stand on forming a government on its own or leading a coalition government. It was initially stated that the AIADMK would lead the National Democratic Alliance government, if it won the election. Home Minister Amit Shah, when he visited Madurai recently stated that the NDA would form a coalition government. However, Mr. Palanisamy was yet to answer the doubts raised after Mr. Shah's statement.
Mr. Nehru said the party cadre would go door-to-door under the 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign to enrol one crore members in the party. They would enrol new members by explaining the achievements of the DMK government and the anti-people actions of BJP government at the centre.
On the AIADMK's protest over the delay in opening the new integrated bus terminus in Tiruchi, the Minister said that it had no right to talk about it as it had done nothing to build a new bus stand. The process of identifying a company for operation and maintenance of the new bus terminus was on. A committee that met in Chennai on Monday to take a decision on it had raised some queries. Action had been taken to answer them immediately. The bus terminus would be brought to use within one to two weeks.

House panel meeting ends as MPs object to Patkar, Raj's presence

A parliamentary committee meeting to review the implementation of the land acquisition law was cancelled on Tuesday after some members, mostly from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), objected to the presence of activist Medha Patkar and actor-turned-activist Prakash Raj, people aware of the details said. People aware of the matter said some NDA members particularly objected to the presence of activist Medha Patkar, citing her role in the Narmada Bachao campaign. (HT Photo) Representatives of the department of land resources (ministry of rural development); ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC); ministry of tribal affairs; non-government organisations (NGOs), experts; and other stakeholders were to speak before the parliamentary standing committee on rural development and panchayati Raj on the implementation and effectiveness of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, a person privy to the detail said on condition of anonymity. 'When the proceedings were about to begin, some members objected to the presence of Patkar and Raj, pointing out that they had not been informed about their presence,' the person cited above said. 'Then 11 MPs, mostly from the NDA, walked out and in the absence of quorum, the meeting was cancelled and is likely to be held on July 14.' The person said some NDA members particularly objected to the presence of Patkar, citing her role in the Narmada Bachao campaign. 'They felt she was responsible for trying to block the Narmada project which would have left one-third of Gujarat parched and drought affected…' the person said. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker from Bihar, Sanjay Jaiswal, said members of the committee had not been informed about the involvement of Patkar and Raj. 'We were told the ministries and some NGOs will put forth their views. There was no explanation on why Patkar and Raj were invited for the meeting, which we eventually boycotted,' he said. The standing committee, headed by Congress MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, has 29 members, including former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda –– who was present for Tuesday's meeting. Ulaka said the two were invited to the meeting to hear their views on the legislation. 'It is a standard practice to hear people from civil society. We had invited them to share their views on how to strengthen the Act… they would have submitted their views without being privy to the submissions made by the ministry representatives,' he said, adding that the list of invitees had been shared with the Speaker's Office in advance as per protocol. 'What were the NDA MPs scared of… we could have heard the two and the report would eventually be drafted after consensus between the committee members,' he further said. The meeting's agenda was to discuss the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, which regulates land acquisition and lays down the procedure and rules for granting compensation, rehabilitation and resettlement to people affected by the acquisition. The legislation has provisions to provide fair compensation to those whose land is taken away and assures rehabilitation of those affected.

TN custodial death: BJP MLA sees DMK govt's gradual departure from ethical responsibilities

Salem: The custodial death of a youth in Sivaganga indicates the DMK govt's gradual departure from its ethical responsibilities, BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan on Tuesday. Vanathi said such incidents were not new under the DMK govt. Vanathi was speaking at a model parliament event in Salem, which held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, in 1975. Model parliaments are being conducted nationwide by the BJP's women's and youth wings. Reflecting on the Emergency period, Vanathi remarked that it was the Congress party that undermined the Indian Constitution. "Congress claims that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi do not uphold the Constitution. If they fail to respond to these allegations, it will become evident that their claims hold merit," she said. The BJP MLA criticized the govt for continuously asserting that the Centre had enforced Hindi. She questioned, "Has the central govt ever instructed anyone to learn Hindi?" She said there was no basis for such claims. She accused the DMK of employing deceitful tactics in its campaign to incite public anger against the Centre . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo She criticised the DMK govt for blaming the central government for not funding projects and schemes in the state. "When the Centre raises inquiries, the DMK govt claims that they cannot respond but only desires the funds to flow in," she said. She refrained from commenting on a BJP-AIADMK coalition govt in Tamil Nadu, stating that such decisions would be made by the party's high command in New Delhi. "We must ensure that the DMK is ousted in the upcoming 2026 elections, and then we will determine our next steps," she said. Coimbatore: Former electricity minister V Senthilbalaji on Tuesday said the DMK members would meet 11.58 lakh families in the district to explain to them the state govt's achievements, especially the schemes for the people of Coimbatore, in the past four years. "DMK functionaries and cadres will meet the residents in person and inform them about the injustices being done to Tamil Nadu by the BJP. They will simultaneously carry out the membership campaign. The work will commence on July 3. We will conduct public meetings at three places on Wednesday evening to convey the betrayals of the BJP govt at the Centre to the people," Senthilbalaji said while addressing the media at his office at Peelamedu here in the afternoon.
