Siali ropes keep Rath Yatra rolling for 400 years

1 2 Keonjhar: For nearly 400 years, the chariot of Lord Baladevjew, 'world's tallest' chariot, is pulled by ropes made from the bark of 'siali' creepers during Rath Yatra. Historians said the Bhuyan community has been providing the ropes for a long time. Locally sourced from nearby forests, siali creeper's bark is transformed into strong, thick ropes by hand. Traditionally, six Bhuyan 'Pirha' would donate the ropes. Pirha means a habitation where hundreds of Bhuyan community families reside. Over time, due to a shortage of 'siali' creepers and other reasons, only Danla village in Suakati panchayat under Banspal block has kept the tradition alive. As the festival nears, the villagers gather to make 'siali' ropes for the Nandighosh chariot of Sri Baladevjew Temple, Keonjhar. From 'Akshaya Tritiya', villagers go to Gandhamardan hills to collect the siali bark. The ropes are nearly 150ft long and up to 18 inches wide. "We make a total of four ropes by combining three for the journey," said Bhimsen Puhan of Danla. Kunja Dehuri, the village chief of Danla, said, " From Akshaya Tritiya, everyone in the village goes to the hills to collect the bark of good 'siali' creepers and bring them back. On Snana Purnima, we make the rope after getting permission. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! The ropes, once tied to the chariot of Sri Baladevjew, are believed to carry blessings. Devotees often collect small pieces to keep at home for peace and prosperity. "The use of these ropes to pull the chariot is a very old tradition," said Raj Kishore Panda, chief servitor of the temple.

One Day for Farmer initiative implemented in Kolhapur district

Kolhapur: The One Day for Farmer initiative was implemented in Kolhapur district on Saturday, with officials from various district administration departments spending the day with farmers to understand their problems. The initiative spread awareness on various govt schemes meant for farmers to the maximum number of farmers. Approximately 300 villages participated in the initiative, which was carried out in collaboration with the agriculture department, district administration, and the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA). District collector Amol Yedge, along with officials from various departments, public representatives including sarpanchs, deputy sarpanchs, gram panchayat members, office-bearers, progressive farmers, farmers in Resource Bank, the Atma Farming Advisory Committee, and groups registered with the govt system participated. Activities such as Shivar Pheri, Sheti Shala, tree plantation, and discussions and guidance sessions reached a large number of district farmers, aiming to engage with the farming community. During the initiative, guardian minister Prakash Abitkar entered paddy fields at Radhanagari and planted seedlings in Anant Chougule's field while being drenched in rain. Abitkar sat with farmers, consuming zunka-bhakri and thecha, interacting with them, and learning about their farming challenges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Campo Largo (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo "Further activities will be implemented to increase crop production after taking information from this initiative," Abitkar said. Institutions for PwD seek exemption from high power tariff

Chennai: Institutions run for the welfare of differently abled people have sought exemption from high power tariff. After the latest tariff revision, power charges for these institutions increased by 25paise a unit and 6 per kW. The 786 NGOs registered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in the state and 393 govt-recognised special schools now have to pay higher bills, despite financial constraints in providing basic amenities to the inmates free of cost. For instance, Nethrodaya in Mogappair spends about 25,000 a month on medicines for 70 inmates. C Govindakrishnan of Nethrodaya said institutions rendering free services to the differently abled have been unfairly categorized under the LT-IIB(1) category along with govt institutions. "We pay peak-hour consumption charges and electricity tax at 5.28%. These charges are similar to commercial and industrial establishments, despite the fact that our institution is non-profit and provide free residential and support services to people with disabilities," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Show Off Your Talent: Enter the Ultimate Creator Contest! Tocsin Media & Marketing LLC Undo Simachandran, who runs the TN Differently Abled Federation Charitable Trust at Ekkaduthangal, said rooftop solar systems also add to their burden instead of helping them cut down on the bill. "We are tariffed under net feed-in charges, and pay network charges too. At least, it should be under the net-metering category so we get some benefit," he said. "We receive donations for food, medicines, and clothes for the inmates, but electricity bills have become a major burden," he added. While the govt continues to provide free power to farmers and has absorbed the domestic tariff hike this year, institutions serving PwD (persons with disabilities) receive no such relief. Govindrakrishnan wrote to TNPDCL last year seeking lower tariffs for institutions for the differently abled, but he received a reply saying they are charged the same as govt institutions and recategorizing consumers is a policy decision. Now, he has written to CM Stalin urging him to exempt such institutions from power tariff. "To start with, 18 schools run by persons with disabilities for persons with disabilities should be exempted from the tariff," he added.
