His victory in the campaign for decriminalisation has now been beautifully told in a short film from the BBC called 'Outlasting'.

Antiques Roadshow expert Hilary Kay met a guest whose father worked on the Titanic and survived the sinking of the vessel Antiques Roadshow's Hilary Kay had an eye-opening encounter with guests whose father, Sidney Daniels, was employed as a plate washer on the Titanic at the age of just 18. Sidney was one of the survivors of the tragic sinking and his offspring brought along a letter he penned to the beloved BBC programme. Recalling the fateful night, his daughter stated: "It was a Sunday, he was sound asleep, there was a banging and shouting and it was the night watchman. They were all a bit bleary-eyed because at first they thought it was a drill. "It wasn't until he got up on deck, there were hardly any people around at first and then officers came and turned to him and said, 'Go to these cabins'." She then explained how Sidney had been tasked with waking sleeping guests on the ship, as she went on: "Of course it was hard to wake people, they were asleep. Some reacted in different ways. One or two said 'What does this young man know? He's 18, the boat is unsinkable, we're not going up on deck'. "Others were saying, 'We've got children, they're going to get a chill if they go up on deck'. So he helped the children with the lifejackets and ushered them up on deck." Hilary chimed in on the episode which was re-aired on Sunday night: "You can imagine the scene of chaos and despair because people realised there weren't enough lifeboats." Sidney's son replied: "That was his job, to try and get people into the lifeboats and the water was rising all of the time. When all the lifeboats had gone, the water was up around his knees and he thought, 'It's time to go'. "So he dived off the side of the boat, swam away from it, came to a lifebelt and to my Dad's mind, it was too close to the boat, he was afraid when the boat went down, the suction would take them down so he said to this chap, 'It's no good here, let's swim away'. "Apparently this chap followed him and they just kept swimming. He said he saw a star in the sky which he thought was his mother and swam towards this star and eventually came to this life raft which was upside down and managed to cling onto that." "When he was on there, he said, 'I'm tired, I want to go to sleep,' and the chap next to him said, 'Don't go to sleep lad, if you do, it will be your last'. "So they sat there singing hymns trying to pass the time away." The duo had brought along a letter which had remained tucked inside Sidney's uniform pocket when he leapt from the Titanic, the Express reports. Hillary, clearly stunned by the letter, began to speak about the artefact's significance and value: "It's an extraordinary item and anything related to Titanic has this extraordinary effect on people. It is an extraordinary moment to behold something which is so linked into an extraordinary moment in history." She estimated its worth, saying: "We're talking about around £10,000, is the realistic value."

BBC Strictly major shakeup as two new stars confirmed for 2025
Two fresh faces are joining the BBC Strictly pro cast this year as new pictures show this year's lineup heading to rehearsals. The countdown to the next series of BBC Strictly Come Dancing is now well and truly on, with the pro dancers being confirmed for series 23. After much speculation over the past week about who will hit the famous dance floor in the autumn, rumours were circulating about the latest round of celebrities set to take part, and which pros will return. New dancers were being tipped for the next season, including So You Think You Can Dance star Alexis Warr and Australia's Dancing With The Stars season three's Julian Caillon, and now it's been confirmed by BBC bosses they are part of the 2025 line-up. An official announcement on Instagram reads: 'Please welcome our two new Strictly Professional Dancers! Alexis Warr and Julian Caillon join the Strictly Come Dancing family when the series returns this autumn on #iPlayer." As the news was revealed, the new pros were spotted heading to BBC rehearsal studios in London alongside the likes of fan favourites Gorka Marquez, Nancy Xu, Kai Widdington, Nadiya Bychkov and last year's winner, Dianne Buswell. Co-star Neil Jones was quick to reply to the official announcement online as he sent well wishes to his new colleagues. He said: "Oh @julian_caillon it was going so well until you said Chelsea FC but anyway. Welcome to the fam and @alexis_warr it's a pleasure to welcome another redhead see you both in rehearsals." Nancy Xu added: "Welcome to the family can't wait to start it!!!!! @alexis_warr @julian_caillon. And Luba Mushtuk said: "Congratulations @alexis_warr @julian_caillon. Exciting times ahead!!!!! As the dancers got back to work, Amy revealed on Sunday night that she was feeling "grateful" to be returning for her ninth year on the BBC dance-floor. The Welsh star was forced to withdraw early during last year's series due to an injury following a gruelling cancer battle in 2023. Amy, 34, underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy after receiving her breast cancer diagnosis in 2023. In a post to her 705k followers on Instagram, Amy said: "Feeling grateful, grounded, and SO excited for @bbcstrictly rehearsals to start tomorrow. "Year 9 – let's go!" The show is set to get into swing in September and rumoured celebrities set to take part include Stacey Solomon, Paul C Brunson, Dani Dyer, Ashley Cain, and Angellica Bell. Alex Jones had ‘no idea' about Jermaine Jenas complaints
The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was removed from the presenting team at BBC's Match Of The Day and The One Show following alleged issues relating to workplace conduct. Before he was sacked in August, Jenas had been a regular pundit on sports programmes and a presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live. Alex Jones on Jermaine Jenas Jones, 48, who co-presented with Jenas on The One Show, told the Big Issue she did not know about the complaints until he had left. She said: 'I very much take people on face value. But with JJ [Jenas] I didn't know what was going on. 'I had no idea. I thought he was taking extended leave. Jermaine Jenas was sacked from the BBC. (Image PA)'The BBC didn't share with me what was going on until they actually dealt with it. And, you know, they did what they thought was right. 'If that was my daughter and she felt uncomfortable with someone's behaviour, I hope that whatever company she was working for would deal with it swiftly as well.' After being sacked from the BBC, Jenas apologised, saying he had done 'nothing illegal' and that 'inappropriate messages' sent were 'between two consenting adults'. Who is Jermaine Jenas's wife? Months later, Jenas' wife, Ellie Penfold, announced the couple had split up after 16 years together. In a statement on her Instagram story, Penfold said: 'I never imagined I would have to share something so personal with the public, but given the situation, I feel it's necessary. 'After 16 years together and 4 wonderful children, Jermaine and I have decided to part ways. 'We will remain friends and continue to co-parent.' Jenas returned to broadcasting on TalkSport radio in February after the outlet distanced itself from him in the wake of his departure from the BBC.
