Mariah Carey's most memorable diva moments: From THAT awkward interview with Cat Deeley to 'not knowing' Jennifer Lopez

Daily Mail22-06-2025
Mariah Carey 's awkward interview with Cat Deeley has resurfaced after the star performed at Capital's Summertime Ball last weekend.
The American singer, 56, took to the stage at Wembley Stadium on Sunday for the annual event and was mobbed by fans when leaving her London hotel.
Back in 2002, Mariah was interviewed by This Morning host Cat who was then presenting music show CD:UK with Ant and Dec.
The singer proved she lives up to her diva reputation when she shut down Cat's questions about her rumoured romance with Eminem.
Cat asked the Grammy winner, if it was true she and the Without Me rapper had been in a relationship.
'Define relationship,' came Mariah's frosty response.
'Is it true you went out on dates?' continued Cat.
'No,' the songstress stated. 'I was friends with him - physical anything - no!' she shot back.
A clearly uncomfortable Cat, replied, 'I like the fact that… I like that,' before quickly changing the subject.
But it's far from the only diva bit Mariah has had over the years as MailOnline takes a look back at some of her most memorable moments.
1. She 'doesn't know' Jennifer Lopez
One of Mariah's most famous diva moments came in 2003 when she said she 'didn't know Jennifer during an interview with the German television program taff.
When asked about her thoughts on Lopez, Carey shook her head and responded with the now-iconic phrase, which later became a viral meme.
The perceived feud stems from several factors, primarily linked to Mariah's ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, a former Sony Music CEO.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Carey alleges that Mottola sabotaged her 2001 album Glitter and its lead single 'Loverboy' after their 1998 divorce.
She claims Mottola gave a sample of the song 'Firecracker' by Yellow Magic Orchestra, which she intended to use for 'Loverboy,' to Lopez for her hit single 'I'm Real.'
Mariah alleged Mottola redirected a planned collaboration with Ja Rule from her to Jennifer, further fueling tensions.
Mariah referred to Jennifer in her memoir as 'another female entertainer on their label (whom I don't know).'
2. The time she dissed Madonna
In an interview with Spin magazine in the 90s, Madonna was asked, 'Are there moments when you just say I wish I was Mariah Carey, just singing silly pop songs?'
The hitmaker laughed and replied, 'I'd kill myself.'
Mariah didn't take kindly to this remark and made a diss at Madonna's age and relevancy in an MTV interview.
She said: 'I really haven't paid attention to Madonna since I was in seventh or eighth grade when she used to be popular.'
Ouch.
3. Her feud with Nicki Minaj
While Mariah's feuds with Jennifer and Madonna played out in the press, her beef with Nicki Minaj was face-to-face.
The two women clashed during season 12 of American Idol when they both joined the judging panel.
Reports surfaced of on-set tension, with a leaked video from October 2012 showing Nicki angrily confronting Mariah during auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In the clip, Minaj is heard saying, 'I told them, I'm not fin' putting up with her fin' highness over there,' referring to Mariah. Nicki also accused Mariah of making negative comments about her, escalating the situation.
In a later interview with Barbara Walters, Mariah was asked if she was the unnamed 'b***h' Nicki sang about in one of her songs.
'Don't know. I didn't know she sang. I thought she rapped. Or whatever,' Mariah replied.
4. Backing out of Will Ferrell's film
Mariah was cast to appear as herself in a failed cameo in Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler's 2017 film The House.
The scene was planned to be Mariah singing one of her songs in an illegal casino setting and then be humorously 'shot'.
However, the cameo was scrapped due to Mariah's on-set behavior, which Will and co-stars described as unprofessional and disruptive.
She was reportedly four hours late to the Los Angeles set, as confirmed by Ferrell on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in June 2017.
When she arrived, she refused to perform the pre-approved scene, saying, 'I don't want to do this scene,' despite prior agreement. She is also said to have demanded stuffed lambs and white roses in her trailer.
The delays and demands led to what Will described as a 'shitstorm' and her cameo was cut from the film.
5. Calling out her backup singer
Mariah is not above interrupting a live performance if things aren't going to her liking.
In a 2008 appearance on Good Morning America, the star chastised one of her backup singers who she belived was singing her part.
Mariah turned around mid-performance and sang: 'Stop singing my part now, baby.'
6. Flourescent lights
On an episode of her 2016 reality show Mariah's World, the star refused to remove her sunglasses while in a room with flourescent lighting.
She then explained she would never be seen in such places without her sunnies on.
'I'm wearing these glasses because we're in fluorescent lighting, and I have a rule which states that I will not be seen in fluorescent lighting without sunglasses — I know it's very '90s,' she said.
7. Her refusal to recognise birthdays
Mariah has a unique approach to ageing - she doesn't acknowledge her birthday.
In a 2014 interview with Out magazine, she famously stated, 'I don't count years, but I definitely rebuke them—I have anniversaries, not birthdays, because I celebrate life, darling.'
She added, 'I'm eternally 12 years old,' emphasizing her whimsical rejection of ageing.
In a 2016 Complez Magazine interivew, when asked about turning 46, Mariah quipped, 'I don't have a birthday. I was just dropped here. It was a fairyland experience.'
8. The time she threw shade at the Grammys
Mariah has five Grammys to her name but in an interview with V magazine, she insisted artists shouldn't care too much about them.
'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn,' she said. 'I mean, I have five Grammys. That's cute ... I won two Grammys the first year I started, but after that, [the Grammys] are like, 'We don't go with the people that are selling a lot of records and are popular; we're gonna go the opposite way.'
'So I got screwed out of certain years. I wasn't bitter about it. I was just like, 'OK, well, I guess I'm not standing here barefoot onstage singing and trying to go a certain way. I'm just me.''

Love Island fans praise Megan as she calls out Harry for his actions in brutal speech

LOVE Island fans have praised Megan Forte-Clarke as she called out Harry Cooksley for his actions in an absolutely brutal speech. In the villa, Harry was in a couple with Helena Ford for two weeks before his head was turned by Shakira Khan. 8 8 But after an additional few weeks, the footballer decided to pursue his partnership with Helena instead. In the last week, the duo became 'exclusive' as Harry was supposedly closed off and happy in their couple. This was whilst Shakira got to know Conor Phillips, but she later made a huge confession to Toni Laites. She admitted that she had 'suppressed emotions' when it came to her true feelings toward Harry, and she then ended things with Conor. The footballer then flirted with Shakira behind Helena's back, suggesting that it "would be a good idea" for the pair to hang out when they both leave the villa. Shakira also said that he was her "best sleeping buddy" for snuggles, which he described as being "so good, like perfect," despite his exclusivity. At the Grafties, Harry & Shakira were nominated for the surprise Critics Choice Award. Experts: The royal protocol Prince William and George may not follow

Prince George turned 12 on July 22 - an important milestone for the future king in more ways than one. Citing a former royal helicopter pilot, Richard Eden, the Daily Mail's Diary Editor, said: 'When Prince William reached the age of 12, he stopped travelling with his father so they had separate flights. Obviously, that is to guarantee the line of succession. 'It will be very interesting to see whether that's the case with George and William because we know they have travelled together either via plane, helicopter or car.' But this is when Rebecca English, the Daily Mail's Royal Editor, who has been covering the royal beat since 2004, interjected. 'I spoke to the Palace this week,' she said, 'and they were like "Well, it's kind of news to us." 'I get the impression that the family won't be changing their travel arrangements at all.' Jo Elvin, who hosts the hit YouTube show as well as making regular appearances on ITV's Lorraine, was puzzled by the Palace's response. 'I remember being a kid and my father telling me about that as a bit of royal protocol,' she said. 'It's weird.' 'Yeah,' Richard said. 'They don't like talking about security and talking about travel arrangements. But I have to say, I mean, it's not a very tasteful discussion, but it is the future of our royal family and I personally find it very worrying. Look, after the Wales Family, we have Harry and Meghan!' he exclaimed. 'I'm sure this isn't true but there were some rumours that Meghan had said something about "we're only one plane crash away from being on the throne." 'I am sure she didn't as it's a very tasteless comment but the fact is, Prince Harry and Meghan could be on the throne and that is something, I would say, would be a threat to the future of the monarchy.' Pleading to the Wales Family, he said: 'Come on, even though it's not great for the environment, please put George on a separate flight and a separate helicopter from his father. My understanding is that he would still be able to travel with his mother,' Jo added. To which Rebecca replied: 'Yeah, but as I say, I don't think the family will change their travel plans at all.' This does not seem to align with the wishes of King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth II - both of whom expressed their concerns about the Wales Family flying together. 'Not only do they travel together,' Richard explained, 'Prince William, who is a qualified helicopter pilot, actually flies the helicopter. According to Robert Jobson's book, the King didn't like William flying the whole family and urged him to stop. It is something that Queen Elizabeth expressed her concerns about as well. I think she was always keen to make sure that she did travel separately from the heir-to-the-throne Charles. It is a matter of some importance, I would say,' he added. Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams added important historical context as to why this rule was followed so ardently by the late Queen. The experienced royal commentator told MailOnline that the bizarre rule was established following a string of tragic deaths in the family involving aircrafts. 'The unexpected can happen, as with Prince William of Gloucester's tragic death in 1972, though this was in a competition,' Richard said. 'Prince George, Duke of Kent also died in a plane crash in 1942, which has become controversial. Prince Philip's sister, Cecile, died in a plane crash in 1937, giving birth to a stillborn child,' he added. These tragedies have only served to reinforce the Royal Family's belief in ensuring the heirs travel separately. Richard noted that a similar policy exists across the pond where the President never travels by plane with the Vice-President. Whilst this new royal protocol may be one that the Wales Family choose not to follow, it is just one of many rules George and his siblings are subject to. These include always travelling with a change of black clothes should a member of the family die unexpectedly. On top of this, they can never eat shellfish while on a royal tour to avoid food poisoning. The sandals have received an average rating of 4.6 stars out of five from M&S customers. Shoppers confirmed that the shoes fit true to size. Hottest fashion trends of 2025 Fabulous' Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend shares the biggest trends from the high street. The East/West Bag Baguette bags have had a good run, after returning from the 1990s' shoulders of Sarah Jessica Parker to modern-day fashion icons, like Hailey Bieber. In 2025, the East/West bag is a similar but elongated shape and has long, thin straps that are easy to throw over your shoulder. They've been on runway models' arms at nearly ever designer show - think Burberry, Givenchy and Bottega Veneta - and are hitting the high street now, too. Powder pink Bright fuchsia pink had its day after the release of Barbie in 2023 and now the more polished and expensive-looking pale shade is taking over for 2025. Pantone may say that it's the year of Mocha Mousse, but the catwalks say otherwise! From Prada to Erdem, the subtle look was all over the spring/summer catwalks, worn head-to-toe or on its own. If the sugary shade is too girly for you, then look to sharp suiting for a androgynous take on the colour. The shell jacket The '80s classic is back, but with a sleek and minimal new twist for 2025. We all know we're likely to see rain for most of spring, so your practical coat of choice should be a cagoule jacket. Depop revealed one of its big trend predictions for this year is retro sportswear, with surges already seen in '80s windbreakers'. Seen everywhere from the stylish streets of Copenhagen to the Miu Miu catwalk, now mums who have an emergency raincoat crumpled underneath their pushchair are very much in fashion! The turn-up jeans While the shape of jeans remains the same for this year and barrel-legs will still be everywhere, the way we're styling them is different. This season, transform your wide-leg, baggy denims into turn-ups. For this look, size doesn't matter, so while deep turn-ups are a hit from jean trend-leaders Citizens of Humanity, a slight fold is still just as good - but only as it's just one single fold. Peep-toe shoe Get your pedicures booked in sharpish, as this season your toes are the main event. After a long hiatus, the peep-toe has been welcomed back into the fashion fold, with brands like Hermes, Miu Miu and Tory Burch showing plain and embellished footwear in this style. From mules to pumps and clogs (yes, clogs will be around too!), there are lots of different styles that are set to sweep the high street. Sheer blouses See-through looks have always lived on the catwalk, but have rarely filtered into everyday life - until now. Designers Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford loved sheer looks on their S/S '25 catwalks and M&S even had sellout success with its black sheer pencil skirt last season. Expect to see more sheer looks lining supermarket aisles and high street shops in the form of skirts, tops and frocks. More on fashion buys Plus, the £12 jeans available from Sainsbury's, they're perfect for summer and autumn. Another Sainsbury's fashion buy looks fresh out of the 1920s. The retailer also has a £26 dress that shoppers say is perfect for summer getaways. And an £11 Tesco dress that works "year round" and is super flattering around the arms. Another Tesco printed midi dress is available for £12, it disguises your tummy and is perfect for summer.
