Nine baggage handlers at Auckland Airport in $24m drug smuggling bust

A joint investigation has foiled a criminal syndicate's operation, whose members have allegedly facilitated the smuggling of class A drugs through Auckland Airport.
Police and Customs raided nearly two dozen properties across Auckland on Wednesday as part of Operation Matata.
Eighteen arrests have been made, including nine baggage handlers and another staff member working at the country's busiest airport.
Those arrested are 17 men, aged between 20 and 42, and a 19-year-old woman.
All were due to appear in the Manukau District Court on Wednesday afternoon and on Thursday.
Detective Inspector Tom Gollan said the operation began on 20 March 2025, when a man was arrested outside an East Tamaki address after 25 kilograms of methamphetamine was discovered in his vehicle.
Since then, detectives from the National Organised Crime Group and counterparts at Customs have uncovered a wider group organising and making it possible for controlled drugs to be smuggled through Auckland Airport.
"Police will allege in court that this group imported controlled drugs through the airport on six occasions," Detective Inspector Gollan said.
"As a result, approximately 64 kilograms of methamphetamine and 3.4 kilograms of cocaine has been seized by Customs and police."

The methamphetamine had a street value of $22.5 million while the cocaine was worth $1.5m.
He said the drugs would have gone on to cause significant harm and cost to New Zealand communities.
"Insider threats pose a threat to this country, and we are pleased to continue to work with Auckland Airport authorities, Customs and overseas law enforcement agencies to stamp this out."

Customs investigations manager Dominic Adams said: "These individuals are alleged to have abused their trusted positions as airport workers to smuggle significant amounts of harmful drugs into New Zealand.
"There is zero tolerance for this type of behaviour and this operation signals the action that law enforcement, with the support of industry partners, has taken against those who thought they could operate outside of the law and profit from their criminal activities."
While the search warrants were being carried out, officers found a significant amount of cash along with quantities of cocaine and a sawn-off shotgun.
Those arrested will face serious drugs charges, including importation, supply and possession for supply of the class A controlled drugs methamphetamine and cocaine.

Inmate Edward Davis sent back to cells for shanking, stabbing Christchurch prison officer

Edward Davis, 38, has spent much of his life in and out of custody and will now have to spend another year and 10 months behind bars for attacking and wounding the prison officer at Christchurch Men's Prison last August. Defence lawyer Marcus Zintl told the Nelson District Court at sentencing on Tuesday that it was important the victim knew there was "no bad blood" going forward. Davis, who appeared in court via video link from prison, read aloud an apology letter he had written to the victim, saying that although they were "just words", he would like to be able to shake the victim's hand and apologise, if he could. "I never meant for this to happen," he said. Judge Garry Barkle said he was sure the officer, who loved his job and wanted to continue working in it, would appreciate the apology. "It seems to me he is a very compassionate prison officer who is dedicated to his role. "It looks like he previously had reasonable interactions with Davis, and despite what happened, he is not ill-disposed to him going forward," Judge Barkle said. Davis was on remand, awaiting sentence on other matters, when on 1 August last year, he attacked the Department of Corrections prison officer. Zintl said "rightly or wrongly", Davis was aggrieved at not being able to reach his partner, who he believed was in the throes of a miscarriage at the time. He is now the father of a 4-month-old son. The police summary of facts said Davis lured the officer out of the guard room, in the middle of the remand centre, and as the victim approached the door, Davis lunged at him with a shank. A scuffle followed, during which the victim was stabbed in the arm, resulting in a puncture wound and a broken thumb. He was off work for a time and placed on ACC. Davis did not initially admit the charge of wounding with intent to injure, having disagreed with the report writers and how matters unfolded, leading to what happened. He ultimately accepted responsibility, acknowledged that the officer should not have been subjected to such conduct, and entered a guilty plea in late February, Judge Barkle said. He said Davis was assessed as being at high risk of re-offending, but wished to lead a "normal life". However, the reality was that he had spent most of his life in prison, where antisocial behaviours were commonplace, and it would now be "very difficult" for him to move forward, Judge Barkle said. He said in sentencing Davis to prison that a weapon was used in the attack, and the victim was injured while at work while carrying out his duties, which was a "serious aggravating feature". Judge Barkle said there was also a level of premeditation in that he lured the victim to an area where he was confronted. "That took some thought and planning on your part," he said. Judge Barkle acknowledged that Davis had suffered "profound and significant" emotional and physical abuse and that his life of drug use and violence had been founded upon abandonment, chaos and neglect. Woman charged with arson after blaze at Christchurch church

Fire and Emergency were called to the church on Atlantis Street in New Brighton after the fire alarm went off at about 2:30pm today. Three fire trucks responded to the call, but crews found the fire well alight and called two more for backup. The blaze was soon extinguished and an RNZ reporter at the scene said the exterior of the church appeared undamaged. Police arrested a 35-year-old woman later that afternoon and have now charged her with arson. She is expected to appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow. Fire investigators are also at the scene.
