Miller Gardner may have died of carbon monoxide poisoning, official says
Gardner, the youngest son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, died March 21 at the age of 14 while on vacation with his family. According to a statement from the Gardners, he died in his sleep after he and several other family members fell ill.
OIJ Director Rándall Zúñiga said Monday that a team testing the family's hotel room found high levels of carbon monoxide, and that the room where they stayed was situated next to "a specialized machine room" that could have caused the contamination. The test results led the OIJ's investigators to believe Gardner "may have died from inhaling these highly dangerous gases," Zúñiga said in a video statement in Spanish.
"It is also important to highlight that this entire investigation has been closely coordinated with the United States FBI, and we await the final results of the forensic toxicology to determine exactly what caused this young man's death," Zúñiga said.
The hotel in a statement Monday told CBS News, "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss that recently occurred on our premises due to causes that have not yet been confirmed. We are diligently cooperating with the Costa Rican judicial authorities, who have taken over the investigation. We trust that the forensic process will objectively, clearly, and conclusively clarify the causes of this unfortunate incident."
"Out of respect for the ongoing judicial process and the family's privacy, we will refrain from commenting on any unconfirmed hypotheses or possible causes," the hotel added. "Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our guests and staff, and we reaffirm our ongoing commitment to the highest operational standards within our facilities."
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is produced when fossil fuels are burned. Cars, furnaces, stoves, certain heaters and generators can all produce carbon monoxide. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and confusion.
An official cause of death has yet to be determined. OIJ previously said autopsy results could take two to three months.
The Gardners were vacationing at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio, which is along Costa Rica's Pacific coast, some 50 miles south of San José.
The family did not provide further details about who else had gotten sick or what symptoms they experienced.
OIJ had said earlier in the investigation that the cause of death may have been food poisoning, but the investigation was ongoing.
The update on a possible cause of death comes days after authorities in Belize said three American women who were found dead in their hotel room in the country last month had died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Sun reported that a terminal worker at the airport said the couple left Barcelona's Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport on Wednesday without their child, choosing to have a relative pick him. The air traffic control worker who went by Lilian, discussed the incident in a TikTok video, saying the child was prohibited from flying because of his expired passport. He also required a visa. "His passport in the country was expired, so the child was traveling with a Spanish passport but the Spanish passport needed a visa. As they did not have a visa, they left the child at the terminal and called a relative to come and pick him up," said Lilian. Airport staff found the boy by himself and alerted authorities, the worker claimed, according to The Sun report. "He told them that his parents were on the plane on their way to their home country, going on vacation," she said. Contact was made with the plane's pilot, who reportedly confirmed that the police told him there was a minor in the car park. He then asked passengers "if someone had left a child in the terminal and no one had answered." The parents were located, who were accompanied by another younger child. The parents were taken to a police station to get their son. "How is it possible for parents to leave their ten-year-old son at the terminal because he cannot travel due to documentation issues?" Lilian said. "They call a relative but the relative may take half an hour, about an hour, about three hours and they take the flight so calmly and leave the child behind!" It was not clear if the parents were charged with any crime or their nationality.

In a flurry of posts on Truth Social, the president has returned to his familiar playbook of trying to distract his MAGA base from the ongoing fallout of the Epstein files by repeating unfounded accusations against Obama and former U.S. intelligence officials who concluded Russia interfered in the 2016 election. 'The Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX is now TOTALLY UNDISPUTED! THE FACTS ARE ALL THERE, IN BLACK AND WHITE,' Trump posted Friday morning. 'It is the biggest scandal in American History. The perpetrators of this CRIME must pay a big price. This can never be allowed to happen in our Country again!' He then shared a video from The Daily Signal featuring right-wing historian Victor Davis Hanson accusing Obama-era intelligence leaders of conspiring to 'destroy' Trump after his victory over Hillary Clinton. 'They must pay for the crime of the Century,' Trump added. The renewed attacks stem from claims made earlier this month by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who cited newly declassified documents to allege a 'treasonous conspiracy' by Obama and senior national security officials to fabricate Russian election interference in order to undermine the legitimacy of the results. Gabbard alleged that Obama, as well as national security officials, engaged in a 'treasonous conspiracy' by manufacturing evidence of Russian interference at the 2016 election, and therefore trying to undermine the legitimacy of the results. The government hasn't said why they transferred the convicted sex trafficker and confidante to Jeffrey Epstein from a low-security prison in Florida to a less restrictive minimum-security prison near Texas A & M University. The former British socialite, 63, is one of the most powerful prisoners in American history. The transfer comes as Maxwell's attorneys are pressing the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn her conviction while also seeking a pardon or commutation for her from President Donald Trump in exchange for her cooperation in the Epstein investigation and broader sex trafficking matters. Maxwell spent two days last week talking to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche – Trump's former personal defense lawyer – at a courthouse near the Tallahassee prison where she was serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking linked to Epstein. Officials would only confirm that they had transferred Maxwell to the federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, not why. Typically, prisoners are moved due to a change in supervisory or medical needs or as a security measure to keep an inmate safe, says Donald Murphy, a Bureau of Prisons spokesman. Moving from a low-security to a minimum-security prison typically provides more freedom within the prison. This could mean more free time for recreational activities or work. Minimum-security facilities typically house nonviolent, first-time offenders or those who have worked their way down from a higher-security prison due to good behavior, according to a prison consultant. Low-security prisons typically serve people sentenced to 10 years or less, making Maxwell an exception. Her release date is 2037. In Florida, Maxwell taught yoga and etiquette classes and worked in the library. The Texas facility holds a call center that employs inmates. It also offers classes such as horticulture and plumbing and cosmetology. The cosmetology may include massage. Maxwell's convictions came from her recruitment of underage girls to give Epstein massages. He then sexually abused them. Holmes, who is serving an 11-year sentence for fraud and conspiracy linked to the collapse of Theranos, earns 31 cents an hour helping soon-to-be released women write résumés and apply for government benefits at the Texas prison camp, according to an article in People magazine. Holmes has been able to keep a mostly vegan diet in prison. Maxwell is also a vegan, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals lobbied to ensure that she had vegan meals in prison.
