MEMPHIS: Three men who were reported missing while fishing and swimming on a sandbar in the Mississippi River have been found dead near Memphis, Tennessee, authorities said Wednesday.
Search and rescue teams with the Shelby county sheriff's office and other Memphis-area agencies began looking for the men Tuesday evening after they were reported missing near a boat ramp at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, authorities said.
The search, which included aircraft, rescue boats and the use of sonar, was suspended Tuesday night because of darkness. It resumed Wednesday morning, the sheriff's office said.
The first two bodies were recovered about 11 am and the third about 12:45 p.m., the sheriff's office said. A cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
The three men were described as Hispanic, ranging in age from their 20s to their 50s, the county fire department said.
Officials say the area has become increasingly popular for recreation at the state park in Shelby forest, located north of Memphis. But the river is treacherous, with several hazards present, including strong currents, submerged items, branches and debris.

You can be drawn into the channel and find yourself staring at a 24-unit barge that's the size of a skyscraper on its side coming straight at you with no way for the barge crew to have any idea that you are there," the fire department said on Facebook.
Authorities are investigating what happened to the men.

100% dues to be recovered from casinos: Sawant
Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant told the assembly that state govt has issued notices to casino operators for the recovery of dues. Sawant said raids are being conducted at onshore casinos where live gaming takes place, while responding to a discussion on the demand for grants for the home department on Tuesday. 'Notices were issued, and 100% recovery will be completed. Some cases are in court,' Sawant said. 'We have increased fees by 100% for new casinos.' Sawant urged people to verify tenants because if a tenant is found involved in any criminal case, the homeowner shall be booked. He stated that 12 new history-sheets were opened in the state and 471 touts were booked. He noted that police reach the scene of a crime in 11 minutes. He denied the opposition's charge that promotions have been held back in police. 'Maximum promotions have been cleared during my tenure,' he said. The CM said that the crime detection rate is increasing day by day, and awareness drives on cybercrime and women safety have been conducted. Further, he said that state govt is working to reduce road accidents. On another front, Sawant noted that the SIT probing land grab cases has arrested 75 persons, and 30 cases are active. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These 11 Everyday Foods Might Be the Key to Knee Pain Relief Undo He said 727 land grab cases were received, and over 600 cases have been disposed of. Where the excise department was concerned, Sawant said that revenue from liquor sales has doubled since 2020 — from Rs 491 crore to Rs 947 crore in 2024 — and this shows that tourism has increased in the state. He said no truck carrying illegal liquor will cross the border. Sawant noted that every month, GST collection is on the rise in the state.

Even Manohar Lal Khattar was better as Haryana CM than Nayab Saini, says former deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala
1 2 Jind: Former Haryana deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala has launched a blistering attack on the BJP-led state govt, accusing chief minister Nayab Singh Saini of losing control over law and order and branding his administration a "gayab sarkar" — a missing govt. Chautala, who leads the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), said during a public address in Jind: "Police are nowhere, and criminals everywhere. Even Manohar Lal Khattar was better than Nayab Saini. If the CM can't control his police, he should hand over charge to Anil Vij — at least he'd suspend someone." Chautala claimed Haryana had become a safe haven for criminals from other states and that policing had collapsed under the current dispensation. He claimed that: "Crime meetings that used to be held every two to three months have stopped. Threats are being issued from inside jails. In Gurugram, a man was shot just metres from a police outpost," he said. Drawing a historical contrast, Chautala referenced his grandfather and former chief minister O P Chautala's tenure: "Murders began during Bansi Lal's time, but Chautala Saheb ended hooliganism within six months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Highest Paying Degrees For 2025 Best Paying Degrees | Search Ads Learn More Undo " He also criticised the BJP for "sidelining senior politician Anil Vij", claiming the former state home minister had been rendered powerless in the current cabinet. Turning his fire on the Congress, Chautala accused its central leader of opposition, Rahul Gandhi, of losing grip on his own party. "The Congress is so divided that even selecting the LoP isn't in Rahul's control. He has mortgaged himself to one leader," he claimed, without naming anyone. The remarks come amid mounting political heat in Haryana, where the opposition has zeroed in on rising crime.
