Vegetable show marks start of 2025 summer festival in Nilgiris
Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru inaugurated the 13th vegetable show, with the main attraction being a 'jallikattu bull' made of 2.5 tonnes of vegetables such as brinjal, potato, radish and carrots.
Tourists and locals were seen taking photos of designs such as 'Tamil Maravan' butterfly, made of carrots and beetroot, and 'Silambattam' design, made of potatoes.
Designs such as the Common emerald dove, made of brinjal, scarlet gourds and banana pepper, and a parrot made of green chilli and red chilli, were among the crowd favouries.
A Thanjavur doll made of zucchini, carrots, radish, green chilli, red chilli and scarlet gourd, was also displayed by the horticulture department.
Horticulture department officials and the Nilgiris district administration urged tourists to visit the park. Rose show, flower show, fruit show, spices show and hill crop show will also be a part of the summer festival and will be inaugurated in the coming days.
Horticulture department officials in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Kancheepuram, Vilupuram, Erode, Theni and Tiruvannamalai districts have set up stalls to show the variety of crops being cultivated in these districts.
The Nilgiris collector said those visiting the district must obtain an e-pass and refrain from carrying single-use plastics. She also sought cooperation from the public and tourists in avoiding plastic use.

First Plantation Show inaugurated in the Nilgiris
The first-ever Plantation Show was inaugurated as part of the final event of the annual summer festival in the Nilgiris at Kattery Park near Coonoor on Friday. Despite the inclement weather, the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops set up exhibits showcasing traditional lifestyles of farming communities from across Tamil Nadu, with thousands of tourists also visiting the park on their way to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. The Horticulture Department said the plantation show was organised to showcase the tea and coffee industries in the Nilgiris and also to highlight the scope for growing plantation crops such as cashews, coconut, palmyra, cocoa, oil palm, and areca nut to farmers. Plantation crops were used in exhibits that portrayed the lifestyle of villagers engaged in farming and agriculture. Cultural events were also organised as part of the plantation show, with the department announcing that awards and prizes will be distributed to farmers growing plantation crops under four different categories at the completion of the show on Sunday (June 1, 2025). Nisha were present at the inaugural event. Tourist spots reopen Following the easing of rain, which had affected parts of Udhagamandalam, Gudalur, Kundha and Coonoor, in the Nilgiris over the last week, the Forest Department announced the reopening of a few tourist spots in Coonoor on Friday, with Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose being among them. The district administration said an average of 30 mm of rain was recorded from Thursday evening to Friday morning across the Nilgiris.

Thousands Flock To Sim's Park in Coonoor To Visit The Show On Inaugural Day
Udhagamandalam: Replicas of a giant-sized lemon, a cocktail glass, a beach cradle, car, an ice cream scoop, a butterfly and a pair of peacocks, among others, all made of different varieties of fruits, literally transported the visitors to Sim's Park in Coonoor in the Nilgiris on Friday to a fairyland. Thousands of people flocked to the Sim's Park on the day to visit the 65th edition of the annual fruit show, which Tamil Nadu chief whip K Ramachandran inaugurated in the presence of the Nilgiris collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and horticulture joint director Sibila Mary and other officials. The replica of lemon is made of thousands of lemons. According to an official source, at least 3.8 tonnes of various fruits were used to make more than 50 structures that are on display at the park. The source said 13 other districts, including Kanyakumari, Trichy, Karur, Thirupathur and Perambalur, were participating in the show. According to horticulture officials, the four-day show features fruits of temperate, tropical and subtropical regions. Cultural programmes would also be part of the show. Three-day annual Rose Show begins in Ooty
Emphasising the need to protect the oceans was the message, the 20th annual Rose Show being held at the Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam had multiple exhibits about sea creatures and the need to preserve them. More than two lakh roses were used in exhibits that were made to resemble dolphins, penguins, sea pearl, seahorse, blue whale, turtle, sea snails, manatees and different kinds of fish that were on show at the rose show. Different exhibits were also put up by the horticulture departments from Krishnagiri, Thanjavur and Kallakurichi. The departments also organised various cultural events. Home rose gardens will also be judged for their beauty and maintenance and the winners will be felicitated with awards at the end of the rose show. The Nilgiris district administration said that the Rose Show will continue till May 12 and urged visitors to visit the Government Rose Garden. The Rose Show was inaugurated by Chief Whip of the Tamil Nadu government, K. Ramachandran, Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, Nilgiris district superintendent of police N.S. Nisha, and P. Kumaravel Pandian, Director of Horticulture and Plantation Crops. According to officials from the department of horticulture, thousands of people are expected to visit the Rose Garden during the rest of the weekend and on Monday. The event is being held alongside the Spices Show in Gudalur, which was inaugurated on Friday and will continue till Sunday. As a result of the Rose Show, which is one of the main show-piece events of the annual summer festival in the Nilgiris, many parts of Udhagamandalam town witnessed traffic jams, especially along the Ettines Road.
